Before school, we had a luncheon for the new teachers. A new committee, the coordinating committee, was formed. The purpose of this committee was to limit the activities so that no two would fall on the same date and to keep them far enough apart so that student attendance would be more certain. New stationery was printed for the Student Government by Mr. Dowling ' s print shop. We took charge of the traffic problem in the halls with the Chief Monitor and his appointed monitors. A welcoming party for the teachers and new students was given the early fall. The annual Homecoming which includes an Alumni banquet, football game, and a dance was held. We sponsored the Cavalcade to Lane. Junior assistants were added to the Cabinet so that they could assist the regular members and be capable of taking the jobs themselves the next year. We sponsored the annual Christmas Welfare Program, and the magazine drive. Student Government will receive the annual sum of $450 out of this fund. Four representatives and a sponsor attended the State SCA Convention at Longwood College, Farmville, Vir- ginia. The District Music Festival was sponsored by the music department with the aide of Student Government. d 95 y Student Government Juniors Assistants Susan Bender, Eugene Hayden, Nelson Hen- sley, Joyce Leigh, Mar- shall Morrow, Tommy Mullins, Doris New- come, Lowell Smith, Bob Wagner, Bill Wat- son, Charlotte White, Larry Wilbur. An outstanding event was the trip to Lane High School when the band traveled by commercial bus for the first time. Although rain prevented marching it was a thoroughly successful trip, because the two bands played concerts for each other in the Lane auditorium, and combined to play the two school songs together. The Band presented the first of its annual Fall Concerts in November. The disappointment of the first semester was the cancellation of the annual Christmas concert due to inclement weather. The second semester opened with the Pre-Festival Concert March 28. One week later the Band and the school was host to the District IV Music Festival for the second successive year. An Honor Band was formed the second semester which consisted of 35 of the out- standing bandsmen. Its first engagement was to provide incidental music for the Senior Play. Plans were made to present concerts at each of the feeder elementary schools. Following the Spring concerts the band participated in the Vienna and Washington Safety Patrol Parades. The concerts were brought to an end with the May Concert and the graduation ceremonies. The instrumentation of the band was increased this year by one Recording Bass, one Oboe, and the possibility of acquiring its first Bassoon was well in view. j 102 y fltl-£tate Sand tflentberA—1952 The Northern Virginia All-State and was held at Lane High School in Charlottes- ville, February 8, 9, 10. It is comprised of outstanding students of bands and orchestras in the schools of nineteen of the Northern Virginia Counties. The students pass com- petitive examinations in the torm ot auditions within their own schools and must meet the standards set by the Band and Orchestra Directors ot Northern Virginia. Upon arrival at the host school they are again auditioned by a panel of judges and placed in one of two bands, and their seating is determined by the results of the audition. Plans were made to meet twice each month on the third Wednesday. A program committee was appointed, the members being Mary Gerwing, Chairman Eugene Adams, and Susan Greene. Meetings were held regularly. The group gave up two meetings because important formal Latin needed work. Parties were held at Christmas and on the fourteenth of February. The program committee had enlivening and interesting programs that invariably advanced the learn- ing of the class. A picture was made for the Fare Fac Sampler. The main aim was to add to the interest of the class while advancing knowledge of Latin. d no Y V iitrtarij Helper Faculty Sponsors — Miss Virginia Organ, Miss Virginia Stanley MEMBERS Cook, Mary Detwiler, Alfred Firestone, Betty Glascock, Nellie Gray, Charles blunter, Myra Johnston, Doris Jones, Shirley Kane, Mary Lytton, Connie Mullen, Kathaleen Peacher, Gloria Reeves, Beverly Rosin, Arlene Sembower, Janice Sherwood, Shirley Taylor, Joan Timmons, Joan Turner, Patricia Vain, Leilani White, Constance Zimbro, Virgie Aims and Accomplishments In addition to the regular librarians, the library staff is composed of a group of student assistants who show a keen interest in working with books. Through their work they become familiar with the library and are thus fitted to help others to become better acquainted with its facilities. They stimulate reading interest by the arrangement of bulletin board displays, posters, and book reviews. At all times they strive to improve the library, both in appearance and usefulness. During the year they sponsored a movie, the proceeds of which were used in buying special reference books; they put on a drive to get more books; they gave a tea for the faculty; and they helped to improve the services of the library by their splendid cooperation. j in y Student SuA fatter A President Paul Hower Faculty Sponsor Mr. Cyrus Doub Bowler, Stanley Case, John Evans, Ralph Haynes, Vernon Hipsley, Howard Hower, Paul MEMBERS Huguley, Donald Jeffries, Harold Klyn, Richard Krehbiel, Robert Lester, Francis Lewis, Francis Makeley, Le Roy Moore, Hewitt Pattishall, Lewis Robbins, Walter Russell, Mike Seal, Robert Shue, Fred Aims and Accomplishments This dub was organized early this year for the first time with the purpose of draw- ing the Student drivers together into a unit which could discuss problems and make suggestions and recommendations more effectively.
