The class is small because the eighth grade was installed just four years ago; therefore, the Seniors are all new students or people who wished to remain for a fifth year. Because of the size, the group has been united in effort and accomplishments. This ambitious group will be long remembered for their originality and spirit. It is the sincere wish of every Senior that he has made Fairfax Fligh School a happier and better place than it was four years ago. ’50 SAMPLER SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Neal Gresham President Jimmie Miller Vice-President Anne Bender Secretary Shirley Anderson T reasurer Mr. Emory Chesley Sponsor 0 James P. This superb production gave vent to the talents of a hither-to untrained group of aspiring dramatists, and proved what spunk and spirit the Juniors have. ' June Mad” will be remembered by outsiders as a delightful evening’s entertainment and by the entire Junior Class as a memorable milestone of high school life. The activities are limited since the class is looking toward the Junior year when money will be needed for the Prom. The class has the distinction of contributing to the Golf Team four of its six members; this has been one of the most successful athletic teams of the year. The class is planning for and looking forward to a picnic and beach party which will be held during the closing days of the school year. They have performed twice this year; once giving a program for assembly and again, being one of the main features on the program for Eighth Grade Night. Many in the group will go into regular music classes when entering high school next year and thus continue their musical career. Guided by the officers and cabinet, the organization has served as a link to connect the administration and the student body. Student Government has served as a clearing house, through which ideas of other organizations and individuals have been exchanged, shared, and carried out. The success of any organization depends largely, if not wholly, on its officers and cabi- net. The executive officers have not only fulfilled their official duties, but have acted as ambassadors, chairmen, and etc., on many occasions. All members of the cabinet have worked unselfishly to make this year’s Student Govern- ment the best. Through their initiative and complete cooperation has it been possible to carry on such an active program as was that of 1949-50. Student Government is proud of its’ accomplishments, and there is tangible evidence to prove what has been done this year. The Honor Plaque, presented to the student body in the so y early fall, has become a vital factor of Fairfax’s well being. Organization of a Welcoming Committee has given our school a reputation for being one of the friendliest schools in the state. Home-coming Week-end, the first ever held here, proved just how hard Student Government was willing to work to make a good thing successful. The Activity Point System, instituted this year, was run completely by members of Student Government. A weekly bulletin, W ho-W hat- Where-When, has served the students of Fairfax all year, and it, too, is a baby” of the council. Student Government has sponsored other projects and executed other ideas this year that would be too numerous to mention. The students of Fairfax will remember all these things, though, because it was their spirit that inspired them, and their cooperation through which they were accomplished. During the year Gamma Sigma has prepared the honor roll after each grading period, conducted Christmas Chapel pro- grams, given worthy service on Student Government and the Honor Court and assisted in many school activities. The outstanding contribution has been the awarding of a scholarship to college to some deserving senior. Money for this scholarship was raised by sponsoring a dance after a football game in the fall and selling Christmas cards. The Fairfax Chapter is a chartered member of the Virginia Association of the F.F.A., which in turn is a member of the National F.F.A. organization. 1948-1949 marked the first year of the return of vocational agriculture to Fairfax High School after a few years of being absent from the curriculum. During this first year the boys taking vocational agriculture applied and received a charter from the state allowing them to function as the Fairfax Chapter. Our Club work, at first, was to help Mr. Archer in organizing and assembling teaching materials and equipment for the new vocational agriculture department. Our work and classes at times were hampered by crews of workmen engaged in the last stages of construction on the west end of the High School. The boys in the F.F.A. participated in several F.F.A. basketball games with other depart- ments located in Loudoun County. The Club helped to trim the hedge in front of the school and aided in repairing the fence around the football field. The Club sent three representatives, James Dowell, Harold Young, and Tom Yarbrough, to the State F.F.A. Rally at Blacksburg, Va., in June, 1949. There the representatives attended different schools and acted as judges of dairy cattle for the Fairfax Chapter. Several electric brooders were made in the agriculture shop and were successfully used. Harold Young made a 16-foot brooder using 8 General Electric floodlights and successfully raised 1000 baby chicks. A great many of small farm tools were also repaired and sharpened in the school agriculture shop. d 102 !- PROJECTION CLUB President Vice-President . . . The first team, coached by Mr. Lawson, was composed of only twenty players and a small amount of equip- ment. Later, after expanding the team and securing the necessary equipment, Fairfax began to be recognized as a football power. Due to a lack of experienced players, the varsity did not win a large number of games this year. Nevertheless, the team is improving. We all feel sure that in the following years to come our team will be one of the top. That same year the girls won the title of Fairfax County Champions.” They again won this title in 1939 and 1940. This year the girls had one of the most successful seasons to date, winning nine, and only losing five. The varsity ended their season by winning the Tournaments, making them champions of the Metropolitan Area. i 120 y Forwards: Carolyn Hutchins Audrey Wright Virginia Blevins Anne Bender Lorraine Fox Virgie Rowland Joyce Leigh SQUAD Dorothy Fulgum Mary Joyce Rowland Barbara Mead Guards: Peggy Waring Katherine Knupp Betty Smith Billie Rae Brownell Pat Breckenridge Joan Koci Nancy Jones Shirley Etter Etta Mae Koch Coaches: Miss Catherine Snodgrass Miss Katherine Tarter SCHEDULE Date Opponent Place We They December 8 Front Royal Here 24 20 13 Falls Church F.Iere 41 14 20 Quantico .... 34 30 January 6 Front Royal There 14 18 12 Washington-Lee There 30 27 17 Montgomery Blair Here 13 20 20 Falls Church Here 29 22 1 Mount Vernon Here 31 10 31 George Washington There 48 20 February 3 Washington-Lee 20 26 7 Quantico 14 28 14 Montgomery Blair There 19 30 21 George Washington 31 20 23 Mount Vernon 46 18 d 121 h Managers Chang, Tobler, Alves, Talbott VARSITY BOXING In 1944 we had the first Inter-Scholastic Boxing Meet. In the first year of its organization, the boxing team won the South Atlantic Boxing Tournament and became champions of the area. Winning five matches, and only losing two, this year the Rebels again came out very good. The victories that the boys have won this year and in past years show that they trained hard and worked hard.
