F. A. is part of the national F. F. A. organization whose members take vocational agricultural training in high school. The Fairfax Chapter is just beginning to reorganize and since this is a very complex organization, complete harmony, and smooth functioning takes time. There are many aims and objections of the F. F. A. and each organization strives to list its course of action and to accomplish them within each year. Here at Fairfax, we must learn to work together and make the F. F. A. well-known and successful. We, the members, plan and are expected to work cooperatively as a well-knitted team. We are buying seed and other agricultural items together and plan to market produce under the F. F. A. as one unit. We will help other agricultural agencies in all community activities such as Japanese Beetle Control. We have meetings scheduled once a month at which some prominent speaker or one who has a background of new or practical agricultural information is secured. For recreation the F. F. A. Chapter has a basketball team, is building a baseball team and is planning to train all members in rifle shooting and select from these members the best for a rifle team. Our next big event was the Thanksgiving Assembly which was simple but impressive with Rev. Gruver giving a brief talk and the Glee Club singing two appropriate anthems. A high light of the year was the Christmas program which was in the form of a tableau depicting the Nativity with the story told by narrator and the carols by the girls. Our biggest undertaking this year was a series of concerts given in conjunction with the band in the elementary schools of the county. It is hoped that these concerts will arouse a great deal more interest in taking music when these students come to high school. An eagerly awaited event of the year was the District IV Vocal Festival held at Madison College in Harrisonburg. We spent quite an enjoyable day listening to other Glee Clubs and soloists and performing ourselves. The judge’s criticism of our work was very helpful and stimulating. Last but not least we sang for the Baccalaureate Sermon and for graduation. We feel that we have had a most enjoyable year and have made a worthwhile contribution to the school. d 86 ) President Manager Secretary Sponsor . It performed at all the home games in football season, although it only marched at two of these. After football season it settled down to the important work of the year — the development of a concert band. It moved into its new quarters the latter part of November. Its first program was the Christmas Concert. The second semester found its membership settled down to thirty-one students, full of hope and ambition for the future. The month of March found the band starting upon a series of concerts to be presented in the nine communities whose grade schools feed into F. H. S. An invitation was received for the first time to attend the Apple Blossom Festival. After the Community Concerts, the band set to work on a Spring Festival Concert, to be presented shortly before the close of school. The band set out this year on a very ambitious six-year program which it hopes will develop a 75- piece concert band which will be one of the outstanding bands in the state of Virginia. The Fairfax High School Area Band Association was organized, consisting of a band committee in each of the nine com- munities we serve, and a Booster” Club for the Fligh School. An eighth grade band was organized for the first time, and each of the nine elementary schools had a band organized immediately after Christmas vacation. With the tremendous progress shown by the High School band and a wealth of talent coming up from the grade schools our school can look forward to having an excellent band in the not-too-distant future. i 87 y OFFICERS President Vice-President Secretary T reasurer Sponsors Marshall Tomlinson John Saffer Gertrude Mahoney Peggy Hutchins Miss Maron Broaddus | Mr. Ralph Lewis MEMBERS Barrett, Carroll Breckenridge, Barbara Breckenridge, Sam Broaddus, Jimmy Cauble, Mary Clark, Jack Dowell, Heighter Durant, Paul Feauherns, Alice Forney, Alexa Galanis, Bill Holmes, Dorothy Hudson, Thaddus Hutchins, Carolyn Hutchins, Peggy King, George Knicely, Orville Lageman, Leon Mahoney, Gertrude McClure, John McKenna, Barbara Miller, Jimmie Moravitz, Francis Nixon, Agnes Poland, Robert Reeves, Edwin Reider, Lawrence Roseberry, Wallace Roseberry, Warren Rowland, Virginia Saffer, John Shelton, Patsy Shockey, Sonya Tomlinson, Marshall Weller, Steuart Williams, David Williams, Richard Windsor, Patricia Wright, Adele Wright, Audrey The Varsity Club has done the following things: FJelped sponsor clean-up drive in the school. We showed that we had spirit. If we were losing by thirteen points at the half we would come back and tie it up in the second half. Mr. Edmondson only had four starters to build his team around. He only had four or five other lettermen to fill the other vacancies. Another thing to take into consideration is the fact that there are only 800 students in this school, and George Washington and Washington-Lee have at least that many boys in their schools. Also many of the boys live on farms or live a great distance from this school and could not go out for the team. Some of the boys that made the team walked fifteen miles to their homes every night and many of them had chores to do when they reached home. Winning games is not the only aim of playing football. It is used to build up the boy’s physical condition and gives them self confidence. It is used to induce the element of sports- manship to them. And, too, many of the boys improve socially and gain friends. A new coach was introduced this year and it was an unlikely year for him. Next year, and the years to follow will see him come around with some winning teams. The rookies, however, played an important part in the making of the team. It takes a lot of hard work to have a winning boxing squad. Since a large number of boys have reported to Coach Edmondson for this year’s track team, the season promises to be an outstanding one for Fairfax High School. If the boys do well in the meets that are scheduled, and if it is possible, we may send several boys to the state meet. We know the boys are working hard and we hope they have a good season.
