The team played notably in their encounter with the ever troublesome Lane High, coached by Mr. Bodnarik, a former coach at Fairfax. Of course each game couldn’t be a best game and our boys ran into some difficulties other than good opponents, such as, when the field was so deep in water that it was really a swimming meet. Our team was undaunted by such difficulties and marched on to victory. Jimmy Moeller, our star end and one of the high scorers of the Washington area, with the support and teamwork of the rest of the Rebels, helped to pave our victorious road. Saluting all of this, including the coaching by Mr. Mavity, we can proudly say that this has been a very successful year. The girls played only a few games before they went to the championship play-off, the high light of the season, with Greenbelt in the Star Tournament. The unde- feated girls kept the lead throughout the entire game thus winning the Metropolitan Area Championship Title. A trophy was presented to Miss Myers as coach of the team; one to the team, received by Virginia Johnson, captain; and one to Maxine Proffitt as the outstanding player in the tournament. BOYS Fairfax basketball season did not go so well this year. The boys played their best but their best did not quite equal the best of their oppon- ents. Even in the face of defeat the Rebels’ spirit and good sportsman- ship did not dampen and they played hard and clean to the very last game. Although bad luck and misfortune came their way, they over came it and won several games. It can be said with great pride that even though we were defeated many times, our boys fought a good fight. For the first time in the history of Fairfax we have put in the ring a boxing team. Our boys fought extremely well this year under the careful coaching of Mr. Pfalzgraf. During the school term 1943-’44, the establishment of a journalism class greatly forwarded the work of the paper staff, and provided training for students interested in newspaper work. The paper staff has published eight issues of the Fair Facts. It has endeavored, through the issues, to provide interesting and enter- taining reading matter. Student Government was formed and is maintained for the purpose of developing such qualities as self-reliance, leadership, responsibility and cooperation; understanding how a democratic governing body functions; to make better and stronger citizens of America for the world of tomorrow. This year, under the direction of the Secretary of Publications, Student Government published a handbook. This was a revised edition of the first one published by Student Government three years ago. Unquestionably this handbook will be useful. Among other projects of the organization for the year was a fund which was begun to provide a cinder track for the school. It is hoped another year will see it completed. A class work program was organized affording the last period classes the opportunity to clean their rooms. Although a minimum number of accomplishments were actually achieved, it is an efficient organization. Reely Ramey, Virginia Rose, Ernestine Simpson, Lorraine Sullivan, Naomi Watkins, Nancy The nurses aides committee is a regular Community Service activity conducted by many of the American high schools. At Fairfax, it consists of thirteen girls who are interested in nursing as a vocation and wanted to do volunteer work for experience in this field prior to going into training. On Tuesdays and Fridays at noon, two girls reported to the health clinic in Fairfax to assist the doctor and nurse for the afternoon. Girls were scheduled to go to the Fairfax County Health Clinic at the Fairfax Court House in pairs of two, each pair going once every two weeks. The other five girls acted as substitutes. The regulars and substitutes were interchanged at mid- year, giving those on the substitute list who wanted to go regularly an opportunity to do so. The girls were excused from class, but were required to keep their work on a satis- factory level. In addition to helping at the clinic, the nurses aides were useful in the giving of the patch test at Fairfax High School. The majority of the students took the patch test, so nurses aides helped on five occasions at the school in addition to doing clinical work. This year they have been very active. The purpose of the Military Police is to maintain order at Fairfax High School. In the halls and on the stairs they relieve congestion by directing traffic, allowing students to go only one way on the stairs and in both directions in the halls. When programs in the auditorium are given for students, they take tickets at the doors. For games on the field or in the gymnasium, they punch athletic tickets.
