Victory Corps Organization Fairfax High School The High School Victory Corps announced by President Roosevelt on September 25, 1942, is a national voluntary organization for secondary schools for the purpose of mobilizing high school youth for more effective preparation for and participation in wartime services in both school and community. It is basically an educational plan to provide instruction and practical training for worthwhile service in the total war effort. Fundamentally, it is a most excellent oppor- tunity to put into practice a program of educational and vocational guidance. Two features are: Q11 The training of youth for that war service that will come after they leave school. Q21 The active participation of youth in the community's war effort while they are yet in school. Fairfax High School youth is eager to do its part for victory. In order to do it effectively, the organization of a Victory Corps under the direction of Harold F. Weiler, the School Director, and W. T. Woodson, the County Director, was completed in December with an approximate membership of 7 50. These girls and boys are exhibiting a seriousness of purpose and a willingness to serve by cooperating in the revamping of their courses of study and in the reorganization of out-of-class activities. In short, they are developing the ability to adjust themselves to the emergency situations arising in their homes, schools, and communities. The objectives of the organization are: Q11 To provide guidance into critical services and occupations by keeping pupils currently informed concerning critical Nman-power needs of the nation and by helping them to choose wisely and to prepare for entrance into such occupations. Q21 To promote wartime citizenship by strengthening the required studies which are basic to citizenship training for American Life. Q31 To enlarge the Physical Education program in order to make the greatest number of pupils physically fit. Q41 To promote properly conducted military drill for prospective members of the armed forces. Q51 To increase the number of pupils studying science and math, and to improve the quality of scholarship in these courses. Q61 To provide, whenever possible, Pre-Flight Aeronautics for pupils for work in essential service occupations of civilian life, including business, homemaking, voluntary civilian defense, home nursing, child care and other service activities. Q81 To provide more effective educational guidance to eighth and ninth grade pupils in the selection of courses best suited to their abilities and needs. The plan of organization provided for general membership which is open to any and all students enrolled who in the judgment of the principal and members of Victory Corps Council meet such simple requirements as: Q11 The student must be participating in a school physical fitness program appro- priate to his abilities and needs in light of his probable contribution to the total war effort. Q21 The student should be studying or have studied courses appropriate to his age, grade, ability and probable immediate and future usefulness to the war effort, within the limits of the facilities of the school. Q31 The student must be currently participating in at least one important continuing or recurring wartime activity or service such as: -Bond and Stamp sales, Red Cross activities, Air Raid warden service, airplane spotting, correspondence to men in armed service, U.S.O. service, Health Department clinic work, farm aid, salvage campaigns, care of children of working mothers, gardening, school janitorial assistance, book col- lections, Ration Board assistance, public library work, Hrst aid work and collection of first aid supply kits for Virginia Reserve Militia. In addition to general membership five special divisions are provided, namely, Air Service QAir-Corps1, Land Service QArmy1, Sea Service QNavy1, Production and Com- munity Service. 5

Upon the pages of the FAKE FAC SAMPLER, reaching back through time, will be found inscribed the dedication of each volume to one individual in whom the student body found the sturdy, rugged and inspiring qualities of leadership which have contributed, in a large measure toward molding character-the framing of mind and the will to serve--which has made America. Today out of the din of battle and the pathos of war there comes back to us the bright ray of supreme hope, the inspiration that what has been given by these great men and women is now being Written in the deeds of heroism, sacrifice and glory by those who sat at their feet in the halls of learning. This volume is dedicated to the inspiring lives of those men and women of the alumni, faculty and student body who have taken up the cause, who serve our country and who stand ready to make the supreme sacrifices. I t is from these lives that comes the inspiration to dedicate this volume. Among these gallant heroes, who just yesterday were among us, we fi nd some who have made the supreme sacrifice. To these brave men we also dedicate this volume. Reverently we bow our heads. We strive to inscribe, in our own futile way, a lasting tribute to those who have laid down their lives for us.
