Stamped upon the pages will be found the picture story of a full year of school These pictures are the sparks which fire the imagin- ation to ramble on. The High School Victory Corps since its organization has been the thread of life woven into the activities of the school and dominating the pattern of events. Consequently, the staff has chosen to divide this volume into six books, each sponsored by one division of the corps. As you read through these pages in the days to come you will, it is hoped, take pride in the story they tell of how the Victory Corps at Fairfax High School contributed its share to the winning of the war. xxwrlllrg' - .I 4 6 S f E K 2 S a u 4 'v 81 he . It is basically an educational plan to provide instruction and practical training for worthwhile service in the total war effort. Fundamentally, it is a most excellent oppor- tunity to put into practice a program of educational and vocational guidance. Two features are: Q11 The training of youth for that war service that will come after they leave school. Q21 The active participation of youth in the community's war effort while they are yet in school. Fairfax High School youth is eager to do its part for victory. In order to do it effectively, the organization of a Victory Corps under the direction of Harold F. Weiler, the School Director, and W. T. Woodson, the County Director, was completed in December with an approximate membership of 7 50. These girls and boys are exhibiting a seriousness of purpose and a willingness to serve by cooperating in the revamping of their courses of study and in the reorganization of out-of-class activities. In short, they are developing the ability to adjust themselves to the emergency situations arising in their homes, schools, and communities. The objectives of the organization are: Q11 To provide guidance into critical services and occupations by keeping pupils currently informed concerning critical Nman-power needs of the nation and by helping them to choose wisely and to prepare for entrance into such occupations. Q21 To promote wartime citizenship by strengthening the required studies which are basic to citizenship training for American Life. Q31 To enlarge the Physical Education program in order to make the greatest number of pupils physically fit. Q41 To promote properly conducted military drill for prospective members of the armed forces. Q51 To increase the number of pupils studying science and math, and to improve the quality of scholarship in these courses. Q61 To provide, whenever possible, Pre-Flight Aeronautics for pupils for work in essential service occupations of civilian life, including business, homemaking, voluntary civilian defense, home nursing, child care and other service activities. Q81 To provide more effective educational guidance to eighth and ninth grade pupils in the selection of courses best suited to their abilities and needs. The plan of organization provided for general membership which is open to any and all students enrolled who in the judgment of the principal and members of Victory Corps Council meet such simple requirements as: Q11 The student must be participating in a school physical fitness program appro- priate to his abilities and needs in light of his probable contribution to the total war effort. Q21 The student should be studying or have studied courses appropriate to his age, grade, ability and probable immediate and future usefulness to the war effort, within the limits of the facilities of the school. Q31 The student must be currently participating in at least one important continuing or recurring wartime activity or service such as: -Bond and Stamp sales, Red Cross activities, Air Raid warden service, airplane spotting, correspondence to men in armed service, U.S.O. service, Health Department clinic work, farm aid, salvage campaigns, care of children of working mothers, gardening, school janitorial assistance, book col- lections, Ration Board assistance, public library work, Hrst aid work and collection of first aid supply kits for Virginia Reserve Militia. In addition to general membership five special divisions are provided, namely, Air Service QAir-Corps1, Land Service QArmy1, Sea Service QNavy1, Production and Com- munity Service. 5 GPM, HI! Upon the pages of the FAKE FAC SAMPLER, reaching back through time, will be found inscribed the dedication of each volume to one individual in whom the student body found the sturdy, rugged and inspiring qualities of leadership which have contributed, in a large measure toward molding character-the framing of mind and the will to serve--which has made America. Today out of the din of battle and the pathos of war there comes back to us the bright ray of supreme hope, the inspiration that what has been given by these great men and women is now being Written in the deeds of heroism, sacrifice and glory by those who sat at their feet in the halls of learning. This volume is dedicated to the inspiring lives of those men and women of the alumni, faculty and student body who have taken up the cause, who serve our country and who stand ready to make the supreme sacrifices. I t is from these lives that comes the inspiration to dedicate this volume. Among these gallant heroes, who just yesterday were among us, we fi nd some who have made the supreme sacrifice. To these brave men we also dedicate this volume. Reverently we bow our heads. We strive to inscribe, in our own futile way, a lasting tribute to those who have laid down their lives for us. The student should be participating in a school physical fitness program appropriate to his abilities and needs in the light of his probable contribution to the Nation's war effort. 2. The student should be studying or have studied school courses appropriate to his age, grade, ability, and prob- able immediate and future usefulness to the Nation's war effort, within the limits of the facilities of the school. 3. The student should be currently participating in at least one important continuing or recurring wartime activitiy or service of the types indicated in the suggestive list of Victory Corps service activities: Air warden, firewatcher, or other civilian defense activity. U.S.O. volunteer activities. Red Cross services. Scale model airplane building. Participation in health services, such as malaria control. Farm aid, or other part-time employment to meet manpower shortages. School-home-community services, such as salvage campaigns, care of small children of working mothers, gardening, book collection, etc. Q . The General Membership Division of the Victory Corps, with its approximately thirty-five members, makes up a platoon under the faculty direction of Mrs. Katharine Hancock and Mr. John Hart. This platoon is sub-divided into four squads, each with its own leader and council member. The council is the organizing and administering body of the entire division. The purpose of the General Membership is to train its members for the war service that they will have to dis- charge after they leave school, and to promote participation in community war effort. While carrying out its purpose, the members become prepared to transfer, should they so desire, to any one of the five special service divisions of the Victory Corps. The Victory Book Campaign, sponsored by this division, resulted in a very worthwhile drive with the collection of many books for the service men. But this has not been the only accomplishment. The help shortage situation has been relieved by cleaning and keeping in order the commercial department. This teaches and puts into practice the giving and receiving of orders and the carrying out of these orders, all of which demand initiative. Physical fitness has been developed through military drills and competitive sports, such as basketball. 3 VICTORY BOOK CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE Allder, Alice Buckley, Walter Blue, Harriet Dove, Virginia McCarthy, Georgia McCarthy, Hazel Rodier, Edith Rowland, Dorothy Thompson, Lucille Vetter, Elizabeth Watts, Louise iii' GORDON E. Membership in this Division requires that two of the following qualifications be met in addition to a Physical Fitness Program: flj Must have pursued or be pursuing a program which includes one year of high school physics and three years of high school mathematics. Q21 Must have pursued or be pursuing a course in pre-flight aeronautics. Q31 Must have pursued or be pursuing a course in automotive mechanics, radio, elec- tricity, or a vocational shop course which gives preliminary preparation for the servicing, maintenance, or repairing aircraft. Recognizing the emphasis placed on military discipline by the Government, the Air Corps reserves one day each week for military drill which has resulted in a high degree of efficiency in field manoeuvers. The success was attributed to the fact that small squads were formed which provided for individual instruction. Keen participating in intra-mural athletics has been maintained by all members of this Division. The most outstanding in-school service has been the assistance given toward the maintenance and repairs of the annex and the shop. All in-school services have been performed through squad assignments as follows: Cleaning, Equipment, Maintenance, Military Police and Inspection. Through all its activities the Air Corps has stimulated a commendable spirit of co- operation and general welfare. AIR SERVICE POLICE Bailey. In order to qualify for membership in the Army the pupils should be planning for and have begun preliminary preparation for service in some branch of the Army in at least three of the following ways, in addition to partici- pation in a physical fitness program: Must have pursued or be pursuing a program which includes at least one year of high school mathematics, or its equivalent in shop mathematics. Must have pursued or be pursuing a program which includes at least one year of high school laboratory science, or its equivalent in shop science. Must have pursued or be pursuing a program which includes one or more special pre- induction courses. Must have pursued or be pursuing a program which includes one or more shop courses. The chief functions of this Division are the development of such phases of school life as, training in military drill, cleaning squad, general policing of school property, and social aid work. Special emphasis is placed on four phases of military drill, namely, discipline, marching, uniformity, and basic knowledge. The officers of the group on discipline attempt to develop a better understanding of the term, discipline, by teaching the importance of quiet and prompt obedience to orders. Through discipline, cooperation is taught and ex- ercised to a much greater degree. Emphasis on training in marching ranks second to discipline. Close order drill is the quickest, most orderly, and easiest method of moving a large body of people. It prepares those boys and girls who are approaching military age to be better acquainted with the elements of military drill, and will also be of valuable training to all who participate, regardless of their future life situation. The officers who stress uniformity put first emphasis on neatness and orderliness. Those who stress knowledge and activity require that knowledge of the proper discipline and essentials of uniformity in drill rank first. The cleaning squad assumed the responsibility of special cleaning assistance in the main building which, in detail, include cleaning of halls, rest rooms, blackboards and glass ventilators. One of the most valuable services offered by the Division was the work done by the Military Police who have full responsibility for trafhc duty in the corridors between class periods in addition to supervision of the parking lot before school and at lunch period. The Social Aid Squad sponsored drives for the Junior Red Cross and for the equipment campaign funds used for the Virginia Reserve Militia. Sea Service Division The Sea Service Division of the Victory Corps has approximately 400 members with Mr. Robert Mavity and Mrs. Jeanne Rust as sponsors. In order to be qualified for membership a pupil must be planning for or participating in three of the following, in addition to participation in a physical fitness program: A program of studies which includes high school mathematics, preferably through plane geometry. A program of studies which includes at least one year of high school laboratory science, preferably elementary physics. A program of studies which includes one or more shop courses. Must have pursued or be pursuing a course in the elements of navigation. The organization consists of four platoons, Senior, Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman, which are divided into companies. Each platoon has a lieutenant, sergeant and a corporal in charge. Oflicers are assigned to Special Detail duties and General Navy duties. The purpose of this division is to train 400 members of Fairfax High School to participate in the total war effort by conserving the school building and properties in it, by offering training in military drill, and by offering opportunities for the development of genuine pride in useful service. The outstanding services of the Navy are: The assistance given to the janitoral service in the cleaning of the auditorium and the gymnasium. The Naval Police Force of approximately 15 members who super- vise ticket sales, maintain order during all special functions in audi- torium and gymnasium, and to patrol parking grounds. Assuming leadership in special service drives such as, the collection of funds to be used in outfitting the local units of the Virginia Reserve Militia with first aid kits, and for furnishing service kits for the men who enter the Armed Service. The Rebels played a spectacular game against the strong Newport News High School Shipbuilders and held the edge throughout the tilt, bath on the offensive and the defensive before bowing to a more experienced team in the waning moments of the game, by a 6-0 score. The next game saw the Rebels facing their old rivals George Washington of Alexandria. The Presidents were hard put to eke out a 19-13 victory with the Blue and Silver shirted boys threatening to tie up the game as the final whistle blew. In capturing their first win of the season, Coaches Mavity and Bodnarik shuffled the Rebel's line-up. The resulting action brought a 44-6 victory over a Culpeper eleven. The National Training School team from Washington next felt the axe on their collective necks when the Rebels topped the visitors with a 28-0 count. Traveling to Lynchburg, the Fairfax eleven played a gallant game, but was overwhelmed by superior experience and stronger manpower, as shown by the Glass High team and came off the field on the short end of a 20-0 score. 76 - - . -..W - ' 1 0 JUNIOR VARSITY SQUAD lci1l.BliRT SHAW MW -V 'l IRAY WORLEY I SROBERT W. Playing the Wglshington-Lee Generals was the next task facing the Rebels and although sports authorities and the Generals themselves expected to roll over the Rebels easily, the perennial Northern Virginia champions were battled to the last ditch before beating out a 19-0 victory over the Fairfax eleven. Coach Mavity was using a largely revised line-up now and getting far better results with it. Moeller was shifted to end with Alvin Hall and Dryden sharing the other assignment. Vernon Hall by this time had proved himself the ablest tackle and While he held down one tackle job, Weadoii, Cole. and Wilson shared the other berth. Earman, Buser, Hughes, Cullen, Nachman, and Bass were all doing yeo- man service at the guard spots. james Lyle had proven himself the answer to thc pivot job and his de- fensive work was making him a star on the team, Lyle was getting valuable assistance from rookie joe Dove. The baekfield was stead with Poling, Kyker Watts, and McMillan doing the bulk of the work, but being materially assisted by Matthews, Gibson, Bell, and Ankers. ln a complete reversal of their form, the Rebels took a terrific 44-0 beating from the Petersburg Crimson Wave, who went on to tie for the State title. In what spectators, coaches, and players agreed was the hardest fought and hardest played game it had been fortune to witness, the Lane High School gridmen from Charlottesville nosed out the Rebels by a 13-12 score. Mt. Vernon High was the victim of an avalanche of touchdowns as the Rebels came back to take rc- venge on Mount Vernon 6-0 victory the preceding year when they went home smarting under a SS-0 defeat. Keith Earman was elected honorary captain by the squad at the end of the season. Lost from the team will be Prince Gibson, Alvin Hall, ends: Vernon Hall, Roger Weadon, Wallace Wilson, and Edwin Cole, tackles: Pat Hughes, Charles Buscr, Edward Bass, William Cullen, and Keith Earman, guardsg James Lyle, centerg James McMillan, Corky Wattts, Medrick Bell, Ray Kyker, Marvin Ankers, Edward Matthews and Harold Poling, backs. 77 Zjgl- f'- ,p- Basketball GIRLS' VARSITY SQUAD AIlUllI.Ql'l' . Starting with a young inexperienced squad, the Reb- els rounded into form quickly and progressed rapidly toward the end of the season to trim a strong Fredericksburg team Q, that had beaten them earlier in the season. The line-up during the early part of the season con- -' sisted of Rush Buckley, Dick Vierbuchen and Teddy Forsey working at the forward posts with jim Moeller at the pivot post accompanied by Ray Kyker and Paul Thompson holding on to the other two positions. This combination held together for the rest of the season, improving as they went. Starting the season with 31-19 loss to the potent and high scoring Charlotte Hall five, the Rebels came back against a strong alumni team to take a 29-24 win. Buckley and Thompson at this point in the season were the leading scorers. The Blue and Silver kept up its torrid pace with a 63-25 runaway against the National Training School quintet with Buckley ringing up 23 of the Rebels markers. The W-L hoopsters proved too much for our boys next as they downed Fairfax by a 32-17 score in the Rebels first Class A tilt of the season. McMillan led the Fairfax scoring game of the series. George Washington's District Titlists journeyed to our gym to administer a 55-32 beating on our lads. It was the Rebel's second class A loss but they took out their revenge on a helpless jefferson quint by a 56-16 count the following game. james Monroe of Fredericksburg came to our gym with an experienced crew and went away with a 33-29 victory' in one of the hardest fought games that the Rebel charges played all season. The spectators were standing on their toes with excitement at the close of the tilt. Teddy Forsey led the Fairfax scoring with 12 points in this fracas. Then the Rebels lost a tough encounter to the Washington-Lee five by a 28-21. It was nip and tuck all the way through the game with the verdict being decided in the closing minutes of the game. Paul Thompson lcd the scoring for us with 8 markers. It is said by sports writers that the best of teams have their bad days and the loss to the National Training School was certainly the bad day in the season for the Rebels, as they took a 41-38 beating from the Trainers even though Forsey led his team with 15 points to his credit. The champion Presidents from George Washington High again victimized the Rebels with a 47-19 shellacking. The high light of the season came when the Rebels, playing on the Fredericksburg floor, trounced the Jackets in a wild and wooly game by a tune 24-20. The game was marked by rough and tumble playing throughout with many fouls marring the tilt. FEnishing up the season by defeating the jefferson High lads again by 21.70 to 31 count. Ray Kyker and Rush Buckley were elected co-captains of the team at the close of the season. Rush Buckley led the season scoring with 97 points, followed closely by Paul Thompson, with 94 and Ted Forsey with 70. Lost to the team next year will be Bob Wagner, Ted Forsey, Rush Buckley, Paul Thompson, Lawrence Cook, and Ray Kyker due to graduation or to the Armed Forces. The team will be built around Moeller, Vier- buchen, Miller, Burroughs and Smith, all of whom saw service during the past year. 80 .5 1 3 v . l April May May May May Manager . . . Coacb , . However, with such veterans as Marvin Ankers, James Lyle, Tom McDonough, Harold Poling, Pat Hughes, Claude Saunders, and Tom Jenkins and the addition of several newcomers, the Rebels should be able to make a creditable showing against their opponents. With the two opening games past, we find that the squad looks to have a very promising future and with a little luck the season should be as outstanding as last year's. Although beaten by the strong Episcopal High School nine of Alexandria in the opener by a IS-S score, the Rebels bounced back the next day to smash out a 5-2 victory over the Briarley Military Academy team at Beltsville, Maryland. Coach Bodnarik's starting line-up for these games has been Moeller on first, Forsey or Miller on second, Buckley on shortstop, Bob Wagner on third base, with Alvin Hall, Paul Thompson, and Vernon Hall patroling the outer gardens. Hutchins, Payne, Kielsgard, and Wood seem to hold the spotlight as pitchers with Morris Sutphin and jack Marzano doing the bulk of the receiving. Rush Buckley, one of the few veteran players on the squad, has been appointed captain of this year's nine and is the defensive star of the infield. With this preamble our constitution was affected. The association established between '42 and '45 has attempted to follow the designs set forth in the preamble and the constitution itself. liarly in the year our organization was temporarily disrupted due to the establishment of the Victory Corps in our school. Our duties in cooperation with the Victory Corps were rather vague at the beginning, but these difficulties were soon removed and Student Government has efficiently cooperated with the Victory Corps for the remainder of the school year. The activities of Student Government have been further hampered to a certain degree this year due to the restrictions governing the use of CLIFS for pleasure driving. The lack of Student Government dances has been noted, but we attempted to put our extra energy to work in cleaning up some of the problems in school. One of the main difficulties that was to be overcome was the traffic in the halls. This was promptly taken care of and monitors were placed on duty, as reminders of the traffic regulations that had been set up. The monitors were later replaced by M. P.'s. fiarly in the basketball season, a problem arose that dealt with attendance at basketball games during school hours. Prompt action was taken and the remainder of the basketball schedule was planned to allow everyone interested in seeing these games to attend them. This came about by the limitation of tickets to be sold and the plan worked very effectively. As time progressed, it was brought to our attention that there was too much damage being done to school property before school began. Action was taken and this situation was effectively removed. Due to increased interest on tlte part of our U. S. Government, concerning public safety, the Fire Squad brought a suggestion to Student Government for the revision of evacuation rules. These revised rules would apply to evacuation from the auditorium in the cam of a fire drill during a general assembly. Mvcral plans were discussed and tried in the auditorium and the Fire Squad, in cooperation with Student Government, perfected this evacuation to a point of much greater proficiency than was previously attained. The question of lockers was recently raised and a thorough study was made by the Secretary of Building, -It-an Chesley. lt was found that many locker doors were being broken because of the improper packing of the lockers. It was, therefore, decided that a regular schedule should be set up by which all lockers might be inspected and thus kept in repair. The Student Government Association is still actively functioning as this article is written and much more is expected to be accomplished before our term expires. We wish, above all, to leave conditions favorable to the succeeding Student Government Association. We made an early request to all students and we would now like to give them due credits for their response. The request was that they cooperate to their utmost with the Student Government Association in all its enterprises, and we feel they have done just that. We feel sincerely grateful, if it had not been for this cooperation we would not have been able to function as we have. W'e hope you will continue your splendid cooperation next year and assist the Student Government Association, as you have this year. We hope that our actions have met with your approval and we feel they will be advantageous to future classes for this is the spirit in which they were performed. I would now like to give my deepest appreciation to my cabinet, the Legislative and judicial Department, and the Home Room Representatives for their splendid work throughout the year. Burgess The Fair Facts The purpose of the paper staff is to train students in the various fields of newspaper work, and to provide a medium for expression of student opinion. Last year a new policy was inaugurated in the selection of the succeeding staff. Each year the editorial staff has selected next year's editor-in-chief. The new plan provides for the replacement at mid-term of all senior members of the editorial staff. The in- coming staff members are advised by the former members. The paper is divided into live departments of work: Editorial, Feature, News, Sports, Management. Under management are these duties: Business Managership, Typing, Make-up, Circulation. The paper has accomplished its purpose this year in that it has trained students in this phase of journalism, and it has provided interesting reading material, and reported news events for thc student body. The latter, however, was rc- sponsib'e for the commencement music when thc mixed chorus sang the well-known Rc-cessional by dc Koven and the girls' chorus sang Malotte's arrangement of The Lord's Prayer. Obviously, a number of the usual activities of the glee club had to be curtailed this year. We were unable to have the National Symphony visit us and there was no oppor- tunity to take part in a state music festival. Members of the chapter have been active in participating in the care and improve- ment of the school grounds in addition to the building and repairing of equipment for home and farm use. Most of the members enjoyed active participation in the intra-muralsportsof the school. The judging team was placed second in the Lincoln Grain Show and many indi- viduals won premiums on exhibits entered in open classes in that show.
