In searching for a word which might best describe our school during the four years we have spent within its walls, “progressive” seems to be the only word that does justice to its achievements. As our school has progressed, so we haVe accomplished, until now we are ready to go out into the world for ourselves. The progress we have made has not been lim- ited to one definite thing, however, but covers many different fields in our high school. The building itself has been improved and enlarged, for when we entered as freshmen from just about every section of the county, we found a school that was still incomplete and overcrowd- ed. During our next year the annex was built, an improvement which relieved some of the over- crowded class rooms, and giving us the shop, the agriculture, and the home economics rooms. Later came six new class rooms to our main building, as well as a beautiful, new, and mod- ern auditorium with the latest, up-to-the-minute stage equipment. At the same time our large gymnasium, which has the most modern lighting system, was built. While the building itself has been enlarged and improved, the P. T. A. has seen that the beauty of the grounds has been enhanced by its gift of beautiful shrubbery. Within the school itself there have been addi- tions of another nature. One of these, important to all students, was the many volumes in our library, the gift of the P. T. A. The school has also purchased many books of great value and interest for the use of the students. As the school has grown, our curriculum has expanded in proportion. The shop has given an interest to some boys who before had no in- terest whatsoever in any classes. With the girls, the study of home economics has become one of the most popular subjects. Printing and mechanical drawing have been offered. Still more recently Spanish has been added. Our curriculum has also been improved as a result of the addition of our gymnasium, for we now have a better place and also more equipment for physical education. This statement concerning physical education shows that care has been taken in order that our physical development shall not be neglected. We have taken an active part in athletics and feel proud of the fact that we have been Fairfax County champions in both girls’ and boys’ bas- ketball for at least one year. This year the boys were Northern Virginia Champions. Baseball has been one of our favorite sports, and we have rated near the top within the county. We have also done very well in football, considering that this was our first year. County field day was held at our school, and we are proud of all the blue ribbons that our girls and boys won. Not only have we accomplished much in the actual games themselves, but we have also built tennis courts, horseshoe courts, a track, and a football field. Athletics, however, is not the only extra-cur- ricular activity we have had, for we have joined different vocational clubs, and have obtained much help from them. As a result, we are not so bewildered about our future work as we might have been had we not joined one of these clubs. After choosing the work we wish to fol- low, we have learned much of the necessary in- formation in order to be successful in it, and we wish to express our deepest appreciation to our vocational director and our faculty advisors who have been so helpful to us in this way. Not a vocational club, but one that is equally popu- lar, is our Glee Club. Through the persistent efforts of its directors, it has accomplished much, and has gone to Richmond several times where it has received high ratings. Still another activity outside the class room, and one to which all students look forward, is our field trips. They have been taken by some of our regular classes, as well as by vocational clubs, in order to give a better knowledge of the subjects which we have been studying. One of the most enjoyable ac- tivities has been the plays which we gave in both our junior and senior years. These plays have been important vents to the parents who have come to see them, as well as to the students who have taken part in them. While there has been work, there has also been a certain amount of social activity. Our Junior- Senior Proms are always big events to which both juniors and seniors look forward. Home room parties at Christmas time are always en- joyed by all the students, too. But the biggest social event of the senior’s life is the lovely ball sponsored by the Young Democrats and given for all seniors in the county. This year our Senior Class also gave a dance for all the seniors of our county in order to establish a better feeling of friendship among them. Our student govern- ment has also been active in giving dances which all students have enjoyed. Student government, however, has not only been active socially, but has been prominent in encouraging school spirit, safety, sanitation, and good, clean athletics within the school itself. We feel exceptionally proud of this organiza- tion, because it was members of the class of ’40 who wrote the constitution and put a strong, stable, student government under way. From this account of our achievements, you can easily see how Fairfax High School has grown and has progressed during the past four years. Its buildings, grounds, curriculum, ath- letics, and social life have all been improved. We, who have watched and been a part of this improvement, hope that we have caught a spark of that progressiveness which will help us in building a successful future. Isabel Swartz. !
