Realizing the importance of communication and following a basic pattern, expert program scheduling has brought about a warmer, cldser relationship between parents, faculty and students of the school. The theme for the year was 'It Pays to Advertise—PTA,” thus time-tested advertising slogans were applied to advantage by those invited to “Join the Right Circle,” during the Membership Drive which successfully increased over the past year. Provocative, stimulating speakers aroused activity of association members. At a capacity meeting PTA was informed that theirs was a power greater than they realized and that their combined efforts could accom- plish important things, with stirred listeners taking pride in the slogan, PTA—A Thinking Man s Organiza- tion.” “Progress is our Most Important Product” was shown by a delightful skit written by a PTA member and with participation of drama students. Another meeting assured parents that “Love is Said in Many Ways.” Closing the final program in May, “You Can Be Sure if it’s PTA, effectively proved that it surely “pays to advertise.” Principal, Samuel Oelrich's friendly, down-to-earth talks on school affairs was a vital portion of regularly scheduled PTA meetings. His understanding recognition of the needs of students and assurance of the school staff’s fullest cooperation and help in all PTA activities and plans was appreciated to the utmost. The Executive Board hosted a coffee-coke break for the first meeting of the teachers when school began. The President, Mrs. Leslie Lorden, began the year with a “get-acquainted” breakfast for all the board members. Honorary Life Membership was awarded for outstanding service to youth. The Founders Day meeting entertained but reminded us of the goals we strive for. An excellent adjunct of communication was the establishment of an efficient working Room Representative Committee, as well as the mailing of newsettes. A well-planned series of Parent-Education classes was presented and provided an invaluable exchange of ideas and information. Safety in school and at home was stressed. Student Welfare was cognizant of needs outside our school and we did our share for others. 13 All in all, Fairfax High School PTA, under the capable, logical leadership of Mrs. Leslie Lorden, en- joyed a productive year of memorable accomplishment. - 14 Winter Seniors Senior Officers Barbara Crane Mimi Oinin A12 and B12—Class Secretaries Sheila Lewis A12 and B1 2— Class Treasurer Sue Zeesman Joan Aaron A12 and B1 2—Class Historians We have looked forward to commencement with longing and anticipation. As we glance back we recall those classmates who helped guide us through our early years: Larry Schwartz, BIO and B11 class president; Jerry Krasn, A10 president; and Steve Ort, AI 1 president. The highlight of our eleventh year was our Junior Prom, ‘Eleventh Heaven”, which was held December 4, 1959. Donning the class colors of black and coral, we approached our senior year under the name of “Capricians”. Our first semester officers were Maxine Littner, president; Harriette Ratner, vice-president; Mimi Dinin, secretary; Sheila Lewis, treas- urer; and Joan Aaron, historian. During this semester our class participated in a flurry of activities beginning with a Valentine's Day party and followed by a Disney- land trip, a talent show entitled ‘‘Madness at McGoos”, a Senior Aye and Bee Volleyball Game, a Senior Bee Breakfast and many jazz hours in Goodwin Gardens. Our second semester, which started off with a “Hello Helene Hop” for Fairfax's foreign exchange student, was led by Jerry Krasn, president; Kenny Smith, vice- president; Barbara Crane, secretary; Sheila Lewis, treasurer; and Sue Zeesman, his- torian. Other activities included a Senior Aye Senior Bee talent show entitled Antics at the Ashgrove”, a theater party at Grauman's Chinese, and “Life is a Song , the mother and daughter dessert. Friday, January 13, 1961 was our mag- nificent Senior Prom, “An Evening in Capri”, which was a most memorable occasion. There is no date to be so long remembered as January 26, 1961, for on that day at 8 P.M. the Caprician Class of W’61 was the first to be graduated from the newly re-decorated DeWitt Swan Auditorium. We shall always be grateful for the untiring efforts of the administration, teachers, counselors and sponsors who have graciously guided us along the paths of success. 16 JOAN AARON Yearbook Editor ft-12 Historian STEPHEN ANTEBI Trock Football EDWARD ARKIN Commissioner of Compos Control Knights MAURICE BARDAVID Comm, of Athletics Boys' League Cabinet LINDA BARR ESTELLE BARRON Girls' League Prometheans Big Sisters SANDRA BENAY Future Teachers Club Sigmas ROBERT BERG Boys' League Secretory Varsity Basketball MARTON BERGER Sword Scabbard BARRY BERKSON Boys' Leogue Delegate Lower House BERT BERMAN All City Trock Bee lettermon Club MICHAEL BERNS Squires Journalism DANIEL BERNSTEIN MARVIN BERNSTEIN ROBERT BERRIS BURTON BIALEK Cheerleader Journalism Editor Boys' Glee Boys League Gymnastics LINDA BLACK SUSAN BLATTEL Girls' Leogue A 12 Girls Comm. We look back on these three years with fond memories and recall all the wonderful activities in which our class has participated. As B-10's we elected our first class president, Tim Schiff. By plannig a picnic in Goodwin Gardens, he got our class off to a fun-filled three years at Fairfax. Our A-10 semester was highlighted by a roller skating party planned under the able leadership of Jerry Olivero, class pres- ident. Spirited by the vivacious Andi Weiss, B-l 1 President, we held our first noon dance in Greenway Court. No Castilian will ever forget the “starry night they spent in 11th Heaven, our Junior Prom, on December 4, 1959. Our radiant queen, Maggie Brody, and her court reigned over the most memorable occasion of our junior year. Ken Nepove, our A-l 1 class president, led us in an eventful semester. We had three major events that semester; a snow trip to Mt. Waterman, a hayride at Crestwood Stables, and a noon dance. The selection of our name CASTILIANS promised a truly successful senior year. During our A-l 1 semester we were pleased to find out that our class would be the first in the history of Fairfax to participate in the American Field Service program. During the summer, Marion Faber lived with a family in Germany, and at the present time, Tim Schiff is living in Norway. Both students have gained invaluable experience. Marion spoke at an assembly and Tim's letters have been read to the student body. With much enthusiasm we embarked upon our final year as Colonials. To start things off, we welcomed Helene Breslaw as a member of the mighty Castilian class. Heading our class was Steve Nepove, president, along with Bill Drabkin, Leila Kraut, Bar- bara Schor, and Joyce Steinberg. As Castilians we participated in many class activities. We joined the Capricians in our volleyball game and talent show “Antics at the Ash Grove. On December 15 we held our breakfast, “Jose’s Jubilee. No football season is complete without a homecoming queen, and this year the Castilians were well represented by Brenda Trojan. Throughout their senior year, several students have participated in the U.C.L.A.-L.A.C.C. Honors Program. These students are certainly a credit to their class and school. On January 30, we, the mighty Castilian class, began our last semester at Fairfax. Heading our class was Jeri Brown, presi- dent; Zach Samuels, vice-president; Vickie Segal, secretary; Al Erdynast, treasurer; and Bobi Danto, historian. Making the semes- ter more enjoyable, we participated in many varied activities. Our Senior Aye-Senior Bee talent show, Around the World from Athens to Castile, and the senior breakfast, “Jose’« Highland Fling, are two events that will long be remembered. Using Good- win Gardens as a Senior Court, we had two camera days which provided many candid shots for the annual. The selection of Ephe- bians was a very difficult choice with many students deserving the honor. The Senior Prom, Springtime In Spain was held on Friday night, June 2. It was an occasion that will always be remembered as the most memorable activity of our senior year. The commencement exercises, on June 15, 1961, marked the culmination of our high school career. Our sincerest thanks go to the wonderful counselors and faculty for their guidance throughout our three years at Fairfax. As we received our coveted diplo- mas, one thought crossed our minds—“Good-bye, Present; hello Future. This delightful mademoiselle charmed everyone who came to know her. On campus Helene studied U.S. History, U.S. Government, and U.C.L.A.—required Senior English Composition among other subjects. Helene was active on Colonial Council and a proud wearer of an Alpha sweater. Her presence at Fairfax did much to strengthen the goals of international peace and understanding, the aim of the American Field Service program. This year also marked Fairfax's entry into the Americans Abroad program under A.F.S. Selected as Colonial Am- bassadors on the basis of scholarship, leadership and character were Castilians, Marion Faber and Tim Shiff. Marion spent an exciting summer with a family in Hannover, West Germany on the North Sea. Tim, who shared Dramamine with Marion and the other American high school students on the ship to Europe, lived in Sandefjord, Norway for the entire year, attended high school and learned to speak, read, and write Norwegian. For the sixth year in succesion, the Fairfax High School Reserve Officers Training Corps unit received an “Honor School rating by the Department of the Army. The start of the Winter '61 semester saw the arrival of a new instructor, SFC Donald J. Southards, who replaced M Sgt James F. Noe, upon his transfer to the position of Sergeant Instructor at Los Angeles High School. Leading the Battle Group for Winter '61 were: C Colonel Ralph Rosenberg, Commanding Officer, C Lieutenant Colonel Larry Lowenkron, Deputy Commanding Officer, and C Captain Marton Berger, Adjutant. The unit and its members participated in various competitions during the semester. C PFC William Burch placed first in city in the individual drill competition for B-10's. The All-City squad competition was held at Fairfax High School on November 22, 1960. In January, our Best Platoon participated in the All-City Platoon Competition. The Rifle Team competed in the Hearst Rifle Match and in the Sixth Army Rifle Match, as well as in inter-school matches. The Color Guard and Service Platoon performed at all home football games. The Military Ball, social highlight of the semester, was held on January 6, 1961, in conjunction with Los Angeles, Hamilton, and University High Schools, at Los Angeles High School. Jerry Lewis and Ron Holden were the featured entertainers. Sword and Scabbard, the ROTC honor Society, was an active participant in the Campus Control program this year. The club under the leadership of its new sponsor, Mr. Jack Arnot, and its president, Ralph Rosenberg, also ushered at all of the auds held this semester and participated in the programs of two Sports Nights. The highlight of the semester was the Sword and Scabbard party, held in January 1961. The semester was concluded with the Awards Ceremony, at which awards were presented to those cadets who had distin- guished themselves during the course of the semester R.O.T.C. The Fairfax High School Army Reserve Officers Training Corps started this past semester with all its efforts directed toward the annual Federal Inspection. This is the most important of all the R.O.T.C. functions and this year it was held on April 13th. It included a detailed inspection of troops to determine their state of training, a thorough investiga- tion of the R.O.T.C. office records and an equipment check. Later in the day, a luncheon was held for the inspecting officer. Also present at this luncheon were the school administrators, army instructors, and R.O.T.C. staff. The unit performed well and the day’s proceedings determined whether or not the unit will be designated as an “Honor School . On March 7, 1961, the Battle Group Commander, Cadet Colonel James A. Jacobson, competed in the semi-an- nual City Colonel’s Test, and was selected as the City Colonel for the Spring semester. This position, the highest one that can be obtained in High School R.O.T.C., was granted to Cadet Colonel Jacobson on the basis of his leadership ability, military knowledge, and personality. Fairfax High School has maintained an exceptional record in City Colonel competition by winning this award more times than any other school in the city. Soon after the beginning of the semester, the election of the new R.O.T.C. Co-eds was held. The new Co-eds, Captains Hedy Fried, Ann Gerchik, and Valerie Reisman joined the previous Co-eds Magie Brody, Jeri Brown, and Marti Steiner in adding color and impressiveness to the troops on uniform days. The unit was also notified that the platoon that it had entered in competition the previous semester had won first place in the North Brigade and second place in city competition. This semester’s excellent Battle Group Staff included: Cadet Colonel James A. Jacobson (City Colonel), Cadet Colonel Ray Gottlieb, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Bernard Sobelson, Cadet Major Baylis Resnick, Cadet Captain Nor- man Koplof, Cadet First Lieutenant David Slater, and Cadet Second Lieutenant Ronald Lorden. This highly successful semester completed two full years that Commandant of Cadets M Sgt. Paul C. Holms has been at Fairfax. There will be a new Commandant of Cadets next semester inasmuch as M Sgt. Holm is retiring from the Army. Returning next semester will be Instructor SFC Donald J. Southards and the Assistant Professor of Military Science Captain Jack A. Abadie. Due to the fact that they had a lot of hard luck and many costly injuries they were unable to take better than fourth place in Western League. It was a long hard season and even though they could not put many points on the scoreboard, all the players put in their best efforts. Some outstanding players were Captain Joe Margolin, Nopo Smith, Abe Olender, Jerry Goldstein, and Barry Torbias. Line play was headed by Chuck Ruben, Ronnie Garr, Dennis Enfield, and Lloyd Engberg. The Varsity Team blended fine shooting with excellent ball handling, to bring Fairfax an exciting year of basketball entertainment. The team which was led by All-League Center Henry McPherson, con- sisted of Second Team All-Leaguers Jerry Rosen and Chuck Rubel, plus Bob Berg and Steve Vine. The Season started on a happy note, when the Lions destroyed Verdugo Hills, but then the team ran into trouble, they had to meet Pre-Seoson City favorite Manual Arts. The Colonials were unable to get themselves rolling and became Manual's second victim of the young season. The next week however the Lions defeated Taft and seemed to be ready to bring Fairfax to the top of the leogue. As the league season started, Fairfax lost a heartbreaker to Hollywood, and seemed doomed to follow the role of so many previous Fairfax teams. However as Fairfax met Hamilton the next week, they proved to all that they were to be reckoned with as Fairfax led by Big Hank , and Bob Berg defeated the Yankee’s. The Lions moved over to Westchester where they defeated the Comets, but for the next two games the Lions were stopped by Venice and University. As the second round started, the Lions got sweet revenge by killing the Shieks, in what was probably the best day Fairfax has hod in years. After once again beating Hamilton and Westchester, Colonialville was invaded by the league runner-up Venice. In one of the most exciting games of the season the Lions defeated the Gondoliers. This brought to o head the league race. With the University game com- ing up, Fairfax hoped for a second place finish ond a City Tournament berth, but then they were defeoted. However, we of the Lion Student Body would like to give our thanks, ond congratulations to a fine Fairfax Varsity Basket- ball Team for a fine season. Although most of the top men are graduating, next year’s team looks good with Widofsky returning, along with Wayne Cutler on the side horse, Mike Bressler on the rings and parallel bars, Mike Broder in tumbling and free exercise, Rick Marken in the rope climb and Jack Binder on the long horse. The staff of the 1961 Colonial worked together with unusual harmony and enthusiasm to make this year’s annual outstanding in every respect. Our chief aim was to use as many new and unique features as possible without detracting from the real purpose of the book, and to present a true reflection of the chief activities and interests of the student body and faculty. We think we have fulfilled this aim success- fully and we are very proud of the results. As co- editors of the Colonial and on behalf of the entire staff, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Patricia Evans for the wonderful and generous help that she has given us. Special mention deserves to be given to Sue Zeesman, Mel Froman, June Goldman, Bette Biller, Geri Hirsch, and Joyce Hur- witz, the excellent senior editors of this yearbook, and Norm Codd, our sports editor who handled that section expertly. We would like to thank Nancy Posner, our layout manager, and our three fine art editors, Richard Matzkin, Nancy Rothschild, and Elaine Jellen. Michael Hearst and Barbara Usper were our outstanding group picture editors, and also a special thank you to Diana Lerner and Chuck Braverman, our photographers. Copy editors Leila Kraut and Karen Goldstein took care of all our typ- ing. Other members of our indispensible staff were Penny Bruskoff, Nancy MacConnell, Joanne Cadkin, Gina Citron, Susan Cole, Roberta Goldblatt, and Leslie Widson. Thank you all for helping to make this yearbook the greatest ever! With this yearbook, the seniors bid a fond fare- well to Fairfax, but we take with us a treasure of memories never to be forgotten. In this yearbook, we can see ourselves and all our friends who are also never to be forgotten. On one hand we thank Fairfax for these memories, and on the other, we anxiously await the future.
