Rich, vain and selfish, Mark Ablett, played by Saul Sacks was always acting a part. To have an audience for his vanity, he often gave house parties, and delighted in tell- ing his guests the story of the ghost of Lady Ann, previous owner of the Red House. Like the traditional Manor House ghost story, Lady Ann's ghost appeared on only one occasion-just before the death of the owner of the Red House. Due to a prank played on him by Ruth Norris lYvette Yeglinl, Mark believed that he would die the following day. All his guests were amused at the trick, but not Mark -and for a good reason. He was murdered the next day. With such controversial characters as Maior Rumbold lRonald Wallacei, Ruth Norris lYvette Yeglinl, Matthew Cayley lSteve Romm l , all of whom have a reason for hating Mark Ablett, there is a great deal of uneasiness felt by the other house guests, Adding zest to the situation, and thoroughly confusing the police, was Antony Gillingham lGerald Mastl, who enioyed playing amateur detective. Lending romance to the story were Betty Calladine lHope Foxl, and Bill Bev- erly lAlan Harrisl, who was in love with her. As the play progressed, many complications arose, all of which were finally settled with a traditionally happy, but yet unusual ending. i f If W THE TAMING OF THE SHREW A woman with a temper is sometimes fun to watch, and the man who can handle her is always hard to find. William Shakes- peare created her, found him, and combined them in his sparkling comedy, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. The comedy, presented as the S '57 senior play, centers around the taming of one quick-tempered and unpredictable Katherine Minola tSheila Brody and Linda Friedmanl. Her younger sister, Bianca lYvette Yeglin and Corky Gilbertl has two offers of marriage, but she cannot accept either of them. The reason? Unbelievable as it may sound to this non-Elizabethan generation, the Elizabethans quaintly insisted on marrying off the oldest daughter first. And getting married is exactly what Katherine refuses to do. The situation may strike the reader as being rather odd -for Katherine is beautiful, young, and rich, But what man wants to marry a scolding, hot-headed, defiant woman? The girls' father, Baptista lRon Wallacel, presents an amusing picture of a very confused man trying to do what is best, but is unable to understand his daughter Katherine, He is constantly trying to find a husband for her with the help of Grumio lPaul Keithl and Hortensio lGerald Mastl, suitors to Bianca. Still, Katherine stands firm. She 'reiects suitor after suitor, and grows more disagreeable with every attempt at matchmaking, Along comes Petruchio iAntony Georgel , a friend of Hortensio, with an eye for a beautiful woman, a fondness for beautiful money, and a complete disregard for displays of temper. How the dashing, handsome Petruchio tames his tempestuous Kate was the theme of the very enioyable Senior Play, Summer '57. x v .' 1 I- 1 :,, i J , f 5 s J -.li I ' 'fnQ'2 t' 'Qs-' 4 'ff 1 , . . The '57 Colonial football machine proved to be the best local outfit in the last ten years as they rolled to the Western League Champion- ship with a four win, one loss record. In the season's lid-lifter, the locals toppled highly ranked Belmont, 12-7. Marshall Barnes made the key play of the game from his half- back position when he scooped up a Belmont fumble and streaked down the field for the deciding TD. The second practice tilt saw the Shaffermen romp past Gardena High, 25-13. Dorsey High provided the last practice game for the Lions as they thoroughly trounced Fairfax, 25-6. The first league game against Hamilton was one of the most exciting and most unusual prep games ever played. The Yankees were the heirs to many incredible breaks, but were still unable to top the Colonials who won out 34-25. The next two league contests were crucials for the locals who had to meet Marshall and Venice on successive Fridays. The Lions responded like true champions to down Marshall, 21-20 on Jack Tiano's three conversions, and topple Ven- ice, 28-20. ln the latter outing, bulldozing full- back Ralph Snookal sparked the Lions to the victory. Riding on the crest of three great victories, the Lions let down the next week and were handed their first league loss by University, 21-13. Hol- lywood didn't meet a demoralized team the next week as the locals bounced back to murder the Shieks, 48-12. Fairfax center, Louie Leiner l601, grins at Mssrs. Smith and Shaffer after grid win. Carl Avazian iumps for two points. madly gaaiefiail The Fairfax Colonials varsity basketball team achieved but one distinction in the '56-'57 season, and that a highly dubious one: for the second straight year they occupied the Western League cellar. The Furious Five started off the season by winning two of their four practice games, nipping Dorsey 56-52 with Carl Avazian and Burt Ipp bucketing l4 and 13 points respectivelyg and over-powering a strong Birm- ingham five by the score of 70-54. The lone Fairfax win during Western League compe- tition was a 5l-34 trouncing of Marshall. Despite ct poor season there was a sprinkling of bright spots. The biggest of these was Burt Ipp, who led the team in scoring, free throw percentage, and rebounds, Carl Avazian, Fred Glantz, and Larry Gregory distinguished themselves with well-timed baskets and excellent floor play. Joel Fleiss, Jeff Gidlow, and Mike Robyn handled the forward positions and played spirited ball through most of the season. Other members of the squad were Jack Lerner, Norm Schaffer, Myron Feldman, and Stu Gordon. 1 f looks on. Fairfax Bur! Coaches Keith Lloyd and Richard Valentine had a hand- ful of top competitors and good scoring teams, even though the Lion cinder squad was weakened by the lack of re- serves. The Lions polished off Marshall, Venice and Holly- wood, while losing to Hamilton and University. Fairfax gave Uni a 40-64 battle before losing to the Warriors, the finest track team in Western League history. For the second consecutive year, defending league 440 champ, Harvey Giss, won the team high point honors. Har- vey scored in the l00, 440 and high iump, in addition to anchoring the relay squad. Mel Ross was a consistent sprinter and always scored in the l00 and 220. Steve Scott did a masterful iob in the 880 and 220, and proved to be a tireless competitor. Jim Pease was the top Fairfax miler, and the machine gave the fans many lasting memories with his performances on the track. Dick Kemp soared to a record 12 feet 7 inches in the pole vault, while teammate Milt Miller scored in the high jump. Terry Evans was tops in the broad iump and big Bill Peters led the shot putters to victory. The league meet was not run at the time of publication, but the competitors mentioned above were expected to easily win league medals and advance as city contenders for the Coliseum spike meet. Wm 7mm The Fairfax gym team opened up the season with a new coach, Mr. Bishop, who previously had established a reputation as one of the finest coaches in Los Angeles with his record of winning teams at Roosevelt High. Hopes were high for this team even though they lacked experience, with only four returning lettermen. The team improved steadily and after dropping its first two meets to strong Pasadena and Van Nuys teams, it started a winning streak of three straight, two of which were in Western League competition. Coach Bishop predicted cz second place spot for the Colonials in the Western League finals, but would not comment on the chance for an upset against Hamilton for first place. Most of the team is made up of iuniors and next year there will be no stopping the Colonials. The future looks bright for the Fairfax gym team. ROW ONE: S. Gordon, J. Lerner, A. Yusem, T. Erdosi, F. Tarnol. mazfzfq Zcwelafi On this year's Fairfax Varsity Baseball Team, there are some outstanding ball players who will probably receive City-wide recognition for their efforts. One of these is Al Yusem, who is the best catcher in the city, and may prove this by notching a berth on the all-city squad. Another is Jack Silvera, who is the mainstay of the varsity nine, both in hitting and pitching. .lack has already contributed a no-hitter against Marshall High School. With half the season gone, Fairfax has a good chance to place high in the Dorsey Tournament, should they get good hurling from Chuck Rosenberg, .lack Silvera and Jack Lerner. Coach Shaffer has a great deal to look forward to as he has four tenth graders playing first string this semester. These boys, who should bolster next year's nine are Tom Newton, Howie Reisbord, Joel Gora, and Howie Kaufman. i, V 1 V' Q M ,J a' f-.,,: V . af' . . , . 1 in ' . The entire varsity team is composed of seniors with the exception of Lon Pynoss, a B-lO. Captain Alan Harris placed high in city ranks, as did Hal Price, who proved a constant threat to his opponents. By his senior year, Jon Pynoos should be first in city rankings with little competition from other schools. The depth of the team, with members like Earl Warren, Len Asimow and Saul Sacks, placed the team high in city ranks. The iron-lungers began the year by conquering their first 5 opponents in a very convincing manner, but because of a series of untimely in- juries the team lost a great deal of strength, and was unable to obtain its goal-to win the title from University. lt was wonder boy Jim Pease who led the way for Fairfax by taking third place in the league meet. Jim was backed by a hard work- ing group composed of Moe Levy, Captain Har- vey Giss, Marty Bischoff, Dave Oyler, Mike Paige and Rod Karr, This group managed to snag a third place in dual meet standings.
