AMERICAN LEGION AWARDS Susan Johnson Don Tronstein Each semester Hollywood Post 405 of the American Legion presents an award to the boy and girl of the graduating class, deemed by faculty and classmates outstanding in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. W'52 legion Award winners were Don Tronstein and Susan Johnson. It is indeed fitting that Don Tronstein should receive the American Legion Award since the honor is symbolic of versatility and versatility is the keynote of his personality. Whether on the athletic field, in the class- room, or at the head of a group, his composure and ready wit enabled him to achieve his oims. His membership in Prometheans for two terms demon- strates his scholastic abilities, while his qualities of leadership, service, and character ore illustrated by his service os President of the Lower House, his activities as a Knight, his Ephebianship, and, in his final semester, his attainment of the School's highest office — that of Lord High. Known to all for her friendly manner and her willingness to help others, Susan Johnson's personality exhibits all the traits requisite of the honor bestowed upon her. During her three years at Fairfax, Susan was affilioted with several groups — among them Alphas, Tri-S, and G.A.A. Especially active in Girls' League affairs, each term since her junior year she filled an important League office; she was 81 1 delegate, historian, vice-president, and, in her senior A semester was elected to the presidency. In addition, she was one of the five Castilians awarded membership in the Los Angeles Ephebian Society. EPHEBIAN SOEIETY Jerry Basar Susan Johnson Ronald Stiles Ginnie Sutton Don Tronstein To conduct a program of Civic Education for its members and the public ot largo; to fostor, promote, ond participate in progroms which champion good government under the American ideals of Domocracy; to encouroge good citixenship in the city, state, and nation; to support constructive legislation and civic enterprises from time to time in accordance with these purposes, ore the avowed ideals of the los Angeles Ephebian Society. This organization was founded in 1918 in the belief that students schooled in democracy and cooperation might apply these ideals to benefit their city. Membership in the Society is restricted to graduates of los Angeles city high schools selected, on the basis of scholarship and service records and qualities of leadership and character, in the ratio of one to eoch forty members of the class. That Ephebianship is not only ae honor but a challenge is widely recognized. For those who con meet this challenge the honor bestowed is immaterial; this is their opportunity for self-expression ond service to the community.
