Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1952 volume:

FURKWUHU During the Colonial era of our nation's history, the secondary school served merely to further the student's educational back- ground. However, as our present educational system developed, a greater emphasis was placed on the opportunities to develop tal- ents and interests which might contribute to the future happi- ness and success of the individ- ual. Outstanding spirit and en- thusiasm are also necessary qualifications for a well-rounded personality and a worthwhile citizen of the future. We, the students of today, will soon be the adults of tomorrow. Our high school years will have sped by rapidly, leaving only fond memories behind. In the years to come, we can look back and see our friends who will have become successful in their endeavors. Memories are to be cherished, and here in your Col- onial, you can always find them willing to become a part of your life again. FAIRFAX HIGH SCHGGL 7B5D MELROSE LOS ANGELES 46, CALIFORNIA ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY You, the graduating classes of 1952, have the future of the world in your hands. During your three-year stay at Fairfax we have worked together in order to learn to live together. I feel that we have greatly succeeded at this goal. Now you are ready to leave and go out into the world. For many of you this will mark the end of your formal education, but I know you will never stop learning, for education is the answer to the world's problems. Goodbye and good luck. SAM HAMERMAN, Boys' Vice Principal. This year, we at Fairfax High School have gathered new laurels for the school. Our graduates have distinguished themselves in the colleges by the high record of scholarship that has been maintained. In the field of entertainment, our students have brought enjoyment to many people through radio and television. One of our girls has won the ora- torical contest sponsored for all the high school girls in Los Angeles. And so, does the roster of our achievements grow. May we of Fairfax continue to enjoy the success which has been ours. MARGARET MILLS NOE, Girls' Vice Principal. The rate of progress has been phenomenal since the days when teenage George Washington surveyed the boundary lines of the properties of Lord Fairfax. The young people of colonial days waited months before the news of world happen- ings reached them. Today we see and hear events three thousand miles away at the moment they occur. We use electrical gadgets, steam and gas engines, and many other modern miracles and labor-saving devices as a matter of course. The rate of progress from now on will no doubt be stepped up to an even faster pace. There is still a great deal of future pioneering to be done in newer and greater developments, not only along technical lines but also in sociological areas. We are confident that the pupils of Fairfax High School will contribute their share to improving world conditions. Our best wishes go with you. Keep climbing, and good luck to all of youl Sincerely, WILLIAM J. GOODWIN, Principal. ENGLISH Mr. Sydes, Mr. Quick, Miss Stoakes. Mr. Brayton, Mis. FIESTA DE LAS FLORES AMERICAN LEGION AWARDS Susan Johnson Don Tronstein Each semester Hollywood Post 405 of the American Legion presents an award to the boy and girl of the graduating class, deemed by faculty and classmates outstanding in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. W'52 legion Award winners were Don Tronstein and Susan Johnson. It is indeed fitting that Don Tronstein should receive the American Legion Award since the honor is symbolic of versatility and versatility is the keynote of his personality. Whether on the athletic field, in the class- room, or at the head of a group, his composure and ready wit enabled him to achieve his oims. His membership in Prometheans for two terms demon- strates his scholastic abilities, while his qualities of leadership, service, and character ore illustrated by his service os President of the Lower House, his activities as a Knight, his Ephebianship, and, in his final semester, his attainment of the School's highest office — that of Lord High. Known to all for her friendly manner and her willingness to help others, Susan Johnson's personality exhibits all the traits requisite of the honor bestowed upon her. During her three years at Fairfax, Susan was affilioted with several groups — among them Alphas, Tri-S, and G.A.A. Especially active in Girls' League affairs, each term since her junior year she filled an important League office; she was 81 1 delegate, historian, vice-president, and, in her senior A semester was elected to the presidency. In addition, she was one of the five Castilians awarded membership in the Los Angeles Ephebian Society. EPHEBIAN SOEIETY Jerry Basar Susan Johnson Ronald Stiles Ginnie Sutton Don Tronstein To conduct a program of Civic Education for its members and the public ot largo; to fostor, promote, ond participate in progroms which champion good government under the American ideals of Domocracy; to encouroge good citixenship in the city, state, and nation; to support constructive legislation and civic enterprises from time to time in accordance with these purposes, ore the avowed ideals of the los Angeles Ephebian Society. This organization was founded in 1918 in the belief that students schooled in democracy and cooperation might apply these ideals to benefit their city. Membership in the Society is restricted to graduates of los Angeles city high schools selected, on the basis of scholarship and service records and qualities of leadership and character, in the ratio of one to eoch forty members of the class. That Ephebianship is not only ae honor but a challenge is widely recognized. For those who con meet this challenge the honor bestowed is immaterial; this is their opportunity for self-expression ond service to the community. CASTILIANS We are the mighty Castilian class of '52 Loyal, brave and bold in all we do— The song of the Senior A's of W'52 resounded dear and true on October 23, os, in o fitting climax to their presen- tation skit, each Castilian leaped through the cardboard replica of the class ensign onto the stage, unveiling to the student body his maroon sweater with its emblem of maroon and gray. Time and time again the owed Senior Bee's attempted to outcheer them but the combined dignity and pride inherent since the Golden Age of Castile triumphed. The tradi- tional rivalry subsided long enough for everyone to enjoy Quartet , the Castilians' Color Day gift to Colonialville. This was by no means the first display of Castilian spirit; on October 4 the enthusiosm of the 150 Al2's at- tending their Senior Breakfast had completely filled the cafeteria with laughter and friendliness. Despite torrential rains which caused its postponement from January 18 to January 25, Fiesta de las Flores — the Senior prom — proved a success. Over 100 couples enjoyed Pat Stewart's orchestra in flower bedecked Greenwoy Court. January 28, Greenway Court was the scene of the Castilians' last social event — the Senior Brunch. The culmination of three years' work and play occured Thursday evening January 31, 1952 when the 210 mem- bers of the class of W'52 passed through Colonial halls as students for the last time and bade Fairfax farewell. The winter semester R.O.T.C. training was so great that it was necessary to create a third rifle company. Again Fairfax was awarded Honor School rating. The most outstanding achievement of the Colonial battalion in W'52 was its expert rifle team. Composed of Julian Sternbach, Jack Mos- cowitz, Ray Orbach, Gerald Sandburg, and Bob Wilson, the torgeteers captured third place honors in the city wide Blue Devils Match with cadets Orbach and Moscowitz placing first and second, respectively, in the individual competition. With Codet Lt. Colonel Ed Petko at the helm, the Spring unit underwent the annual Federal In- spection. A battalion drill team was organized, re- focusing local interest on the complicated maneuv- ers of a rifle squad. The battalion band, directed by Mr. C. Y. Smith and commanded by Cadet Captains Mosco- witz and Wolf in the Fall and Spring semesters, per- formed during all the football games and assisted at all the military functions. Continuing a recently established custom, the student body selected four girls for each semester to serve in the honorary capacity of coed officers, one for each of the two rifle companies, one for the band, and one for the cadet staff. Over 2,000 people saw Cheaper by the Dozen the three-act S'52 senior play presented the evening of Thursday, May 15, for the general public and the morn- ing of Friday, May 16, for the student body. The hilarious presentation starred Leonard Harris as the inimitable Papa Gilbreth, who raised his twelve madcap offspring with time-saving devices and a loud, strong voice—not to mention his hand — and Diana Stessel and Roberta Goldstein as Mrs. Gilbreth. It centers about the childhood reminiscences of the two eldest children, Frank, portrayed by Grant Gibson, and Ernestine, portrayed by Shirley Lappin and Steffi Skolsky. At the beginning of the play Papa Gil- breth demonstrated how to save time in the bathroom while taking a bath, and, later on, while learning the Morse code! The gals were shown how to make a shy fellow stop his car in front of their houses —that is, if they are as desperate as was Anne, the love interest of the play, play- ed by Barbara Budwin and Marissa Wol- per. And the fellows became well aware of the moral code that Papa set up for all his daughters — no lipstick, no nylon stockings, and naturally, not being able to go even to the drugstore without the accompaniment of a brother-chaperone! The success of the play was accom- plished through the tireless efforts of the Drama II class and the enthusiastic coaching of Mrs. Martha Palmer. Observe this one, simple, continuous motion . For sev- eral months the large sign on the door of the small room at the rear of room 153 had aroused the curiosity of everyone who passed it. Many had attempted to trespass; the few who did enter were never quite the some again. Seldom would one catch sight of the strange group of creatures of renown known as the annual staff. By the end of March, however, the picture had changed. Though fifth period one lone figure — Editor-in-chief Gloria Granz — toiled in silence behind barred portals; sixth period confusion reigned supreme. Mr. Lit would take roll in 237 and the staff would gradually drift down to the office, now littered with proofs, identification lists, and stacks of name cards. As the various deadlines approached fingernails dwindled, but never was action as drastic as that advocated by Bobbe Kopp and Rollie Lavine in the snapshot contemplated. THE GREAT ENLIGHTENING occurred when prints of the senior pictures were returned and the nearsighted precision with which the pictures were mounted left members cross-eyed for weeks and blessed them with vivid dreams of rubber cement. Yet somehow they managed to recover in time to be able to gaze fondly upon the finished product. VICTORIANS uOur Scholars Are Tops in the Nation, Our Athletes Have Proven Their Worth_________________________ The spotlight revealed a blue ond white timeclock with five dates — 1848, 1858, 1890, 1897, and 1952 representing the five major eros of the Victorion age — the Coronation, the Crimean War, Victorian Culture, the Golden Jubile, and finally the S 52 Victorians of Fairfax. Following the spirited class song and cheer, for the first time unhampered by the good natured A12-B12 rivalry the class presented its movie — “The Jolson Story.” The traditional Senior A-Senior B rivalry came to a head on Von Cleve Field May 12 when both classes com- peted in various field events culminated by a rubber hose tug of-wor. Time after time the Senior B's attempted to outrun outpull, and outcheer the Victorians. To the three hundred couples who attended the prom the evening of June 6th, it seemed os if a portion of the South Pacific hod been transplanted to the girls’ gym. Music for Under Coral Waters was provided by the Bill Oaks' Band. The effects of the will and prophecy, read of the Victorians' Brunch held June 16 in the Cafeteria, were apparent for several days. Commencement, June 20, proved a fitting climax to the Victorions’ reign. As they marched onto Van Cleve Field for the last time as Colonials—none could help recalling the work ond plan of the past three years at Fairfax. She has served Fairfax in many capacities--through membership in Pointsmen, Big Sisters, and Tri-S, as A10 Delegate, Bll Secre- tary, and on the Annual Staff. Her scholastic aver- age earned membership in Prometheans and CSF. For these attributes she was elected to Alphas, serv- ing first as vice-president and then as president. She also received a Bank of America Achievement Award in English, and was recently admitted to the Los Angeles Ephebian Society. Ray Orbach is one of those unusual persons whose zest for living and ready wit enable him to be successful in almost anything he undertakes. Despite his widespread interests however, he could never be accused of spreading himself too thin. En- tering countless debate tourneys, he won several blue ribbons. His flair for science won him national and local recognition. He was ROTC major and on the rifle team, placing first in city-wide competition. He is a member of Knights, CSF, Prometheans, and the Gazette Staff. Active in student government, Ray served as Assistant Lord High and this term as Lord High Commissioner. He was recently award- ed Ephebianship and a Bank of America Achieve- ment Cup in science and math. Tutored by Coaches Shaffer and Hanna the Lion pigskin aggregation finished up its regular 1951 football campaign with one lone triumph against five setbacks. The Lions opened the season against a powerful L. A. eleven tutored by the well-known Harry Edelson. The Romans headed by their quarterback Fred Miller stumbled and fumbled their way to an unimpressive 26-0 victory over the injury-ridden but stubborn Fairfax Colonials. Without the services of tailback Bob Gerst and fullbacks Bob Bergdahl and Jack Kopel, and together with the injurious condition of several Fairfax participants the Colonial single-wing attack was virtually inef- fective against the men of Rome. Taking full advantage of a pair of Lion mental miscues, the Hollywood Shieks grabbed an early two touchdown lead and outlasted the apparently impotent Lion pigskinners, 12-0. It was the first time since 1947 that the schools have tangled on Van Cleve Field and only the second occasion in the past nine years that the Filmlanders have gained victory. Grayson Turney's flog bound Venice Gondoliers, expecting to meet o breather' in supposedly impotent Fairfax, suffered a deflation of ego built up after a pair of convincing triumphs, as they were forced to rally from the depths of defeat to pass up the fired up Colonials, 18-7. Bob Gerst's 19-yard aerial to Buzz Engelson in the corner of the end zone followed by Gerst’s perfect place- ment shook the Venetians from their perch, but tricky ball handling on the port of B. W. Muldrow and J. B. Chalk enabled the Gondo's to come back and snare the ■■duke . Erupting from a season long slump at the expense of the Hamilton Federalists, the Lion forces whitewashed the win-less Yankees 13-0 for their initial triumph of the Sunset Loop campaign. Deter- mined on cracking into the win column by belting the impotent Yanks, the Lions tallied the first time they got possession of the ball. Lion tackle Sherman Moreno recovered a Yonk fumble on the Hami 34 yard line, five plays later Dick McDonald, the game's outstanding offensive as well as defensive performer, leaped over from the nine. Bob Gerst converting the extra point. Two plays into the fourth period the Colonials struck again. Gerst climaxed a 54 yard drive, powering 1 1 yards through the Hami defense for the score. His conversion ottempt was wide. Willard lauermann's Gauchos, sparked by their brilliant bone-crushing duo of Halfback Nate Leanse and Fullback Joe Lucostic rolled to a convincing 12-0 win over Fairfax. The Colonial running attack, which had been improving with each game, was completely bottled up by the hard charging Dorsey line. Whereas Bob Gerst connected for 89 yards in the air, the Lions picked up only 1 2 yards rushing. Ending a hectic season in the splendor of homecoming day the Uni Warriors pushed across a last period tally to down the Colonials 21-14. The final fray was a see-saw battle all the way. At times it looked like the Lions might have an upset in the making, but the combination of Jose Uranga and Dick Sassaro, the latter playing briefly, was too much for the faltering Lion forces to hold. BEE FOOTBALL Sparked by the accurate patsing of Quarterback Bernie Sherman, Coach Dick Valentine's Bee footballers tied for third place in West- ern League competition, breaking even in six games. Opening against I. A., the boys played their hearts out at they bested their Roman rivols in a thrilling game, 12-7. Journeying to Hollywood the Lions were crushed by the champion Red Shirts 21-0. Against Venice the Crimson ond Gold gridders scored on a last minute safety to pull the game out of the fire 9-7. By defeating Hamilton 15-0, the Colonials were still in the pennant race. In the Dorsey game the homebreds were whipped by the Dons 26-13, in o wild scoring game. Fighting for a second spot berth, the Lions were ripped by University 7-6, losing on a blocked conversion. Working from a quick-opening T, the Colonials mode good use of the double wing for their potent possing attack. Sherman aerials Seymour Weisberg, Marv Rofhenberg, and Don Steward carried the brunt of the offense. Defensive stalwarts Jay Goldberg, Morris Fox, Curt Cooper, Shel Richman, Bo Bradford. Joe Gatto, and lucky Constonce prevented opposing clubs from running wild. UNIVERSITY vs. FAIRFAX VENICE vs. FAIRFAX HOLLYWOOD vs. FAIRFAX UNIVERSITY vs. FAIRFAX BASKETBALL Gus Stiles Bert Mastrov Fairfax basketballers ended the casaba season with an unimpressive record of five wins against nine setbacks. Opening their season against L. A., Colonial forces held the “men of Rome throughout the first stanza, but the Romans come to life with a second period scoring spree to crush the Lions 65-39. Dividing 18 points equally, forwards Len Rapping and Bert Mastrov and center Gus Stiles led the Lion offensive. Spearheaded by center Bill Williams, the Hollywood Sheiks administered a lethal massacre to the hapless Fairfax Colonials, burying the locals under a 64-40 scoring barrage. A last minute rally by the Venice Gondoliers resulted in a 52-48 victory over the faltering Colonials. Paced by Bert Mastrov, Coach Keith Lloyd's Colonial cagers outplayed the Westchester Comets to garner their initial victory in a night gome at the Comets' new gym, 53-47. The Hamilton Federalists went hog wild to bury a determined Fairfax cage crew 75-49. This was the first time the Yankees had outscored the Colonials in basketball. Dorsey's Dons were held to a first half standstill as the lions boasted a short lived 23-22 half time lead, only to drop the tilt 65-49. Gus Stiles was a thorn in the Dons' defense, continually grabbing rebounds off both backboards. A convincing 60-43 hammering by the University Warriors ended the bucketeers first round of competition. The L. A. High cagers then typified their early season ploy, running roughshod over an outmanned Fairfax quintet 72-34. Fresh from Chicago's Marshall High, lorry Friend pumped in a dozen buckets to lead the Lions to a gallant 57-52 upset over the favored Hollywood High Sheiks. The Colonials continued their winning ways as they were awarded a forfeit victory over the Venice Gondoliers. Although the Lions did lose the fray, they played outstanding basket- ball. Making it three straight, the Lions, again paced by Larry Friend, who tied the school record with 27 markers, dumped the Westchester Comets 69-40. With victory apparently in their grasp, the Colonials blew a fifteen point lead late in the third quarter, and lost to Ham- ilton, 61-59. Hamilton transfer Barry Sexton bucketed 24 markers to aid the Colonials to a 61-51 upset victory over the Dorsey Dons. Larry Friend hit the hoop for 14 digits, leading the lion second half attack. A red hot University quintet exploded in a second half scoring spree to bury a stunned Colonial cage crew, 57-41, in the final hoop tussle of the year. The Casaba men headed by the deadly shooting eye of Paul Hendison, who garnered league laurels, for he rang up mpressive 13.3 average. Also making league berths were guards Dave Linderman and Larry Leiman, d string and honorable mention teams respectively, for their fine floor play and outstanding re- s. Opening their season as underdogs with no returning lettermen to speak of. Coach Lloyd worked time to find an adequate combination of potent basketballers in Hendison and Joe Siegal at the for- rds, Jerry Mundel at the center spot and Dave Linderman and Larry Leiman at the guard positions. The tremendous scoring punch supplied throughout the last season recalled memories of the 1949 A'ho walked away with the loop crown. TRACK The 1952 track season was filled to the brim with surprises, for Coach Keith Lloyd. Faced with the prospect of a dismal season, the team came up with some startling results. They won a minimum of dual meets, but when the league meet rolled around, the Lions showed their stuff. Gary Dorfman, the speedy junior, raced to twin victories in century and 220, in the prelims, running the 100 in 10.1, the city's third best time for the season. He was nosed out in the finals, Dorsey's Ellington one stride ahead in both races. Rosenblum had never run the 440 until this year, but quickly be- came the Lion's number one quarter-miler. He fought a constant cold throughout the major part of the season, but managed to come back and place in the league finals. Bob Bergdahl went undefeated, except for the Holly meet where he placed second to team mate Irv Laxineta, but was beaten in the league finals. He did finish second that day, but the judges ruled the taping on his hand was illegal and he was disqualified. An alternate to the city prelims, he qualified for the finals with a put of 49 feet, IV2 inches. Ron Herzberg, although erratic for a high jumper, also placed in every meet, tying for fourth in both the league and city prelim meets. Dale Seltzer, running in only two dual meets, surprised most experts by placing in the prelims and then doing the same in the finals, proving it was no fluke. As a team, the Lions were able to gamer only one victory, but sin- gularly, they downed many a foe. : . BASEBALL Sherwin Rosenthal Barry Latman Larry Leiman Allan Weinroth Seymour Weisben Claude Gauthier The Western circuit baseball flag race in 1952 was the same old story again, Dorsey, the great western power ' again turned the Sunset Loop upside down, as they walked away with their third consecutive league title, much to the vexation of the Fairfax diamond men. Paced by the senior duo of Bob Gerst and Dick McDonald, the Lions displayed championship form only in spots, and it proved to be not quite enough to overhaul the precision-like Dorsey Dons as the Lions finished western runner-up. Boasting tremendous power at the plate and fine pitching on occasion, the local nine was simply unable to combine both of these factors in key games which aptly describes the Fairfax baseball story for '52. Bright spot of the season, other than the fine work turned in by a host of returning 10th and 11th graders, was the Colonials great 20 to 5 blasting of the Venice Gondoliers during the first round of play, a game which saw the Lions amass the solid total of 18 hits, while in return, limiting the Gondos to a single base knock. Coach Frank Shaffer presented a squad loaded with seven returning lettermen. Fairfax's hopes for a Western pennant in '52 centered around the outfield of Claude Gauthier, A1 Silvera, and Seymore Weisberg and the pitching trio of Silvera, Barry Latman, and Chuck Bradish. Strength, too, stemmed from let- termen Larry Sherry and Larry Lieman, able infielders. The Lions found themselves pretty well set all the way around. Gerst's third base position, and behind the plate where McDonald displayed his wares represented the staunchest forts. GYM TEAM Buddy Steinberg The Lions opened the season as defending league champions, and had they possessed a bit more luck, they would have succeeded in running their string to three in a row. Coach E. B. Smith smiled optimistically, as Jerry Mells recovered from the flu in time to join the team in their 98-22 trouncing of Dorsey. In that meet, Mells combined with AI Pappe to gather a total of 27 points, more than the whole Don con- tingent was able to muster. Westchester was next to be trampled beneath the Colonial onslaught, being caught in a 1121 2-71 2 rout. Then came what was billed as the decider. Hamilton stepped bravely into the Lion's Den. They trailed by a scant point, going into the final event, and looked with hungry eyes at the crown in the Fairfax trophy case. But it was Joe Almaleh who came through when the chips were down, as he flipped his way to a blue ribbon on the tumbling mats, to cinch the victory. The Lions were still kings. The fall of Rome followed the Hamilton contest. The Lions won, 76-44. The Gondoliers were sunk by about the same mar- gin, giving the Colonials their second undefeated league season, in three years. Then came the league meet. With Herbie Alpert sitting on the bench due to an appendectomy the week before, the Lions lost needed points. The Yankee staged an uprising, and the Lions were dethroned. Venice too managed to score enough points to finish ahead of Fairfax. Their reign had ended. This season marked the end of several high school careers. Marv Taff and AI Pappe, who carried the team through a rough practice schedule; Gene Berkowitz, a stand-out in his first term of competition; Herb Alpert, and of course Jerry Mells, the only Lion to grab a City berth.
