The nation in 1924 saw Calvin Coolidge as President of the United States; prohibition had gained a steady foothold, and the consumption of intoxicating beverages had decreased greatly; the Charleston was the new rage from coast to coast; and riding parties on tandem bicycles were the recreation of the day. Los Angeles in 1924 saw the construction of an important project. At Melrose and Fairfax, the site of Fairfax High, a building shaped like an H was constructed. Then, the site of the new school was the edge of the La Brea Pits. “Enter to Learn; go forth to serve” was the motto that opened the doors of Fairfax High School in September of 1924 and has prevailed throughout the years. One year later, in 1925, Fairfax High began expand- ing to meet the needs of its enrolled students. Then, the English building, and the bungalows were added. Since then, Fairfax has always yielded to the demands of its growing population. Recently, Greenway Court was built to alleviate the demands for a social hall. The faculty staff under the able guidance of Principal Roe Van Cleve embarked upon a remarkable teaching career at Fairfax High School. The first important event was the dedication of the auditorium. Fairfax was dedicated to Education, the Glory of God, the Ideals of Our Country, to Beauty, Fine Arts, and to Service. Today, twenty-five years later, this dedication still rings from the rafters in the auditorium. Now, in 1950, the nation sees President Harry Truman in the White House; television as a new and important medium of entertainment; and automobiles and airplanes serving as a means of recreation. In Los Angeles, after a quarter of a century, Fairfax High School has already grown to a position of importance and leadership in the commun- ity; and the 1950 Silver Anniversary “Colonial” is proudly presented as the silver link between yesterday and today.
