FAIQFAX HIGH SCHOOL LOS ANGELES,CALIF. The nation in 1924 saw Calvin Coolidge as President of the United States; prohibition had gained a steady foothold, and the consumption of intoxicating beverages had decreased greatly; the Charleston was the new rage from coast to coast; and riding parties on tandem bicycles were the recreation of the day. Los Angeles in 1924 saw the construction of an important project. At Melrose and Fairfax, the site of Fairfax High, a building shaped like an H was constructed. Then, the site of the new school was the edge of the La Brea Pits. “Enter to Learn; go forth to serve” was the motto that opened the doors of Fairfax High School in September of 1924 and has prevailed throughout the years. One year later, in 1925, Fairfax High began expand- ing to meet the needs of its enrolled students. Then, the English building, and the bungalows were added. Since then, Fairfax has always yielded to the demands of its growing population. Recently, Greenway Court was built to alleviate the demands for a social hall. The faculty staff under the able guidance of Principal Roe Van Cleve embarked upon a remarkable teaching career at Fairfax High School. The first important event was the dedication of the auditorium. Fairfax was dedicated to Education, the Glory of God, the Ideals of Our Country, to Beauty, Fine Arts, and to Service. Today, twenty-five years later, this dedication still rings from the rafters in the auditorium. Now, in 1950, the nation sees President Harry Truman in the White House; television as a new and important medium of entertainment; and automobiles and airplanes serving as a means of recreation. In Los Angeles, after a quarter of a century, Fairfax High School has already grown to a position of importance and leadership in the commun- ity; and the 1950 Silver Anniversary “Colonial” is proudly presented as the silver link between yesterday and today. Samuel Hanermon Boys' Vice Principal WILLIAM J. GOODWIN Principal Dear Friends, Your graduation from high school is a very important mile- stone in your lives. Its main project for the fall term when Lloyd Tepper, Julienne Bishin, Judy Mis- ner, and Louise Bockall served as officers was a coaching plan whereby Promethean members would aid their fellow students in their studies. The spring semester saw the formation of an UNESCO Committee for the term's project. Spring officers were Jerry Holzman, Julienne Bishin, Bill Schlinder, and Peggy Alba la. Highlights of the years' activities were the in- troduction of a new type of installation-initiation banquet in Greenway Court, the CSF Convention in Santa Monica at which Fairfax was well represented, and the annual Promethean Picnic held on May 19 in Griffith P adc. The Grenadier class boasted six members in the California Scholarship Society, while the larger summer Titan class had eight to their credit. WINTER PROMETHEANS: FRONT ROW: J. Dubin, P. Albala, E. ALEXANDER ZONNI - C wiici -•far' f i U - J j Dolores Rodoff A I | Editor-in-chief L en Marder Ed Schuman The staff of the Silver Anniversary issue of the Fairfax Colonial, a group of hard working am- bitious sludents, came up with a great many good ideas to make the Summer 1950 Annual enjoyable for all the students Pictured on this page are the Colonials who brought this annual with its hard cover to you. Ak though they had a lot of fun putting your annual to- gether, they really had to work hard and fast to turn it out. Without doubt the majority of credit for this publication should go to capable Dolores Radoff and Mr. James D. Brayton, the faculty sponsor, who su- pervised the production of the Annual. Dolores Ro- doff headed the energetic staff. Dolores, who is capable and efficient, put in mcny long hours of hard work to make the Annual a success. Duties of the other members of the staff were to make write-ups, type, supervise picture-taking, work on publicity, sell ads, and take care of the art work. As Literary Editor, Jean Eisenberg saw that Serna Labovitz, Chuck Cohen, and Ed Cray got in their write-ups on time. Serna supervised the Annual publicity. Credit goes to Judy Davi s, Sandy Sherman, Estelle Cohen, Gloria Lieber, Fred Krieger, Sol Bern- stein, Dan Reisman, Steve Jacobs, Bill Tarnoll, and Phil Wilk, who individually did their part in con- tributing energy and ideas to make this Annual en- joyable for all the students. Sema L abovi tz Fred Krieger Jean Eisenberg J ud ith D avis Ste ve Jacobs Estelle Cohen James D. Brayton Harry C. Underwood The ads that went into the annual were sold by enthusiastic Delaine Geller, Eleanor Woolf, and Eddye Rodin, These kids gave up many hours of their own time to sell the ads. The staff began to put the Annual together last semester. If you remember, part of the pictures were taken then, part, this semester. After collecting snapshots, we began working on page layouts. After this came the fascinating job of gooping, and then write-ups. And so the pages began to take shape. Whenever anything went wrong in annual staff, we called in Mr. Harry Underwood, who was the annual staff advisor for nineteen years, and who just recently turned over his position to Mr. James D. Brayton. Now, as the result of many hours of hard work, the annual staff proudly gives you the SILVER AN- NIVERSARY ANNUAL. E lay ne R ad in Delaine Geller Eleanor Woolf Saul Bernstein Dan Reisman B il I Tarnol Co xHtial Leonard Alexander Editor-in-chief Irwin Frie Business Mona ger Charles Cohen Delaine Geller Editor-in-chief Business Manager Fairfax'official tabloid, tbe Colonial Gazette, enjoyed a year of success on the writing front in '49-50 under the direction of its new Advisor, James D. Bray ton. During the winter semester, Editor-in-Chief Len Alexander supplied the drive in an effort to publish a weekly paper. Working with a competent editorial staff of Len Maizlish, Cecille Stillwater, Delaine Geller, Ronny Ettinger and Chuck Cohen, the Alexander regime resumed the weekly Gazette habit. Ed Schuman was staff photographer, when not working on annual business. Artist extraordinary, Ron Gerst, supplied cartoon originality. Chuck Cohen replaced Alexander in the drivers' seat for the summer semester. His column was Here's Our Angle . Cohen worked in close con- nection with a staff of Geller, Stillwater, Jean Eis- enberg, Serna Labowitz, Phyliss Handfinger, Marty Stiles, and Ed Cray. And so, with the plaudits justly awarded, we put away the printer's ink until next time. WINTER GAZETTE STAFF: FRONT ROW: L. Maizlish, J. Blonkfort, |. Fries, L. Alexander, C. Stillwater, C. Smith, enjoyed a good season, high- lighted by the appearance of Mr. Noble Cain, noted composer and conductor, during the spring semester. The year saw the introduction of a new type of musical pro- gram here at Fairfax, as the “Choral Jubilee of 1950” made its debut. Mr. Homer Hummel and his A Capella Choir, together with the other music organizations, presented a fine evening performance to which the public, as well as the studentbody, was invited. Music Appreciation and Music History classes were under the excellent tutelage of bothMrs. Turner and Miss Kiesling. Other appearances of the Girls Glee Club, A Capella Choir, and school orchestra included the traditional Christmas and Easter assemblies. These groups participated in many other successful programs and activities during the past two semesters. SUMMER ACAPPELLA CHOIR: FRONT ROW: D. Fushman, R. P inzone, J. Silvers!, B%. Goland, J. McCoy and Backall and Major Markland P.M.S.T. for Fairfax, the Re- serve Officers Training Corps went through a tremendous slate of activities during the past year. Besides the annual Blue Devils Competition and the Federal Inspection, in both of which Fairfax placed high, the unit tried to special- ize in extended order drill or, to the layman, combat maneuvers. But even topping this were the two trips to March field where the cadets were indoctrinated into Army life, and the three day naval training cruise to San Diego and back where the Codets went Navy. Asa climax to the semester and year, the Military ball was held in conjunction with Ham- ilton high at Hamilton. Maj. Markland, Sgt. Backall, Sgt. Mellin, Sgt. McCoy. Frank Wagner Charles Mortis R ichard Haggard R ick Janis Stuart Kagen Marvin Kapitz Marlin Rabiroff Sol Ajalat (Hub 7kc bhiddic King football left its indelible mark on the Fairfax record pages of 1949. Coach Frank Shaffer, moulded a group of gangling, eager boys into a spirited unit that breathed heavily down the necks of the Wes- tern League front runners. The likes of this team may never again tread on Van Cleve Field, for the '49 team under the hustling leader- ship of Captain Lenny Zelinka had great “heart and spirit. The L ions annexed a tie for second place with Los Angeles, but the season's accomplishments do not end there. This was a team that made its own breaks and made them pay off. Great moments be- came common place as the season rolled on. Victories, and there were four, came hard and were well earned. Fairfax's gallant band of footballers rose to the heights on oc- casion and nearly knocked the pins from under Hollywood's champ- ionship eleven. The Red and Gold's biggest day was its crowning triumph over Hamilton. Entering.the game as the underdog, Fairfax proceeded to run up the most convincing win in its gridiron history, totaling 47 points to the Yankee's 6. Ranking as tossups for the most dramatic moment of the year are the feats of Frank Wagner and Ronald Baroney. Wagner's sensational play was born with one second remaining in the Dorsey game. Halfback Chuck Morris unleashed a 25 yard des- peration pass which fluttered into the waiting arms of Wagner, who then calmly stepped into the end zone after the gun had fired. The play netted Fairfax a 13-6 Victory. In the Venice game, the stage was again set; this time 26 se- conds were left. Fate's hand once again waved in favor of the Lions as the inexperienced place kicker, Baroney, toed the ball squarely between the goal posts to provide a three point victory margin. Post season all league selections saw Center Stuart Kagan named to the all Sunset eleven as first string pivot tackle Len Zelinka to the second squad Western. Hanna had a championship glint in his eyes in '49. And except for a few bad breaks and a little over- confidence on behalf of the boys, the Colonial grid Cubs would have walked off with the Western League pennant With only one returning letterman in the fold. Mentor Hanna, on the season's outset, was faced with a tremendous rebuilding job. It was team spirit blended with the will to learn that turned a seemingly disasterous schedule into a winning one Having but three practice scrimmages under their belts, the green Cubs ran into the annually slrong Dorsey eleven in the loop opener. The Colonials were rated as distinct under- dogs in pre-game talk, and rightly so. However, the tightness of the game was a hopeful indication of things to come, even though the locals tasted defeat. Bouncing back after the Don Loss, the Cubs proceeded to knock off University, Los Angeles, and Hollywood in convincing fashion. Paced by a hard charging line, plus the potent passing of Quarterback Al Silberman, and the glue fingered antics of Morely (Buzz) Engleson, the locals thundered past the vaunted Roman rivals, 27-12. Hollywood's Sheiks wound up on the wrong side of a 14-6 score as the Lion Cubs roared to their third straight triumph. This time it was Silberman's aerials and the running of Morty Bellet and Bullet Joe Nacaratto that provided the difference. Following the Sheik victory, Mentor Hanna's gridders could not maintain their surging stride and were delt a pair of losses by Venice and Hamilton, respectively. FRONT ROW: B. Gerst, F. Naismith, could be proud. The 1949-50 squad was no exception. Paced by the much lauded Dick Dixie Killgore, the locals wound up with a good season. And except for a few bad breaks, cold days, and a Hollywood High five, they would have been up at the top in post season reminiscing. The season's top thriller came in the first Sheik tussle. Although the visitors pulled up two points on the long end of the final score. Mentor Lloyd's basketeers exhibited their best play of the year. The University-Fairfax series also developed into two thril l-a-minute contests. In the opening round, Fairfax came through in ihe closing moments to win at Westwood. Then in the return game the Warriors did a double take on the Lion's man- ner of victory in the Fairfax gym. Ron Springwater's free toss with 30 seconds remaining pro- vided the initial one point victory margn for Fairfax and Hank Steinman's desperation field goal in the last two seconds won for the Warriors. Biggest single game total for any member of the starting five came in the first Hamilton tilt. In one of the year's most hair raising scoring duels Killgore poured 27 points through the bucket only to be bested by the 31 point effort of Hamilton's Mickey Wellen. When laurels were handed out, Mr. Basketball, Dick Kill- gore, ended up the year on the first all-City five and earned plau- dits as the Western's player of the year” and highest scorer. Big things in small packages. Stocked with two top returnees from the '49 Western League kingpin crew plus a fresh bunch of 10th graders and up-and-coming Cee stars, Coach Keith Lloyd eagerly went out to retain the sunset crown. Practice engagements saw the midgets gain an even split in arduous tests. During league play, the Cubs racked up four wins against eight setbacks. The cubs looked like world beaters as loop play got underway. After crushing Dor- sey under a bucket deluge in the initial contest, it looked as if the midgets would be there when championship honors would be doled out. Herb Teitleman's 16 points in the University fray, the scoring high water mcrk of the year, handed the locals their second win in a row. Teitleman and Gary Jubas could do no wrong as the Cubs pummeled the Warriors. Then the winning combination went awry, dropping conte sts to Los Angeles and Hollywood. The Romans, who went on to capture the WL gonfalon, rudely dumped the homebreds, 52-28. The second round proved more dismal than the initial. Fairfax could find only Venice easy pickings, losing five of six second round tilts. In this game, Teitleman and Bill Tamol led the attack. BEE BASKETBALL: FRONT ROW: R. Elkins, A. Kishineff, W. An inability to win on the road was the locals most ap- parent shortcoming. When away from the confines of Van Cleve Field, the boys lost all finese and optimism. However, when performing on familiar Van Cleve, the Colonials at times showed the class of their former all-City pre- decessors. On opening day at Rancho Cienga, the homebreds fell vic- tim to the brilliant slants of Dorsey Pitcher Ed Palmquist. The Don right hander baffled the Shaffer Men to gain a 5-1 verdict. All was not as black for the varsity when University tra- veled to Fairfax to do battle. The Warriors came out second best in a 14-2 ball game as the silent Lion bats finally sounded. Following the Uni encounter, Lion bats again slumped into a deep sleep. Only the slugging of Len Zelinka could main- tain the pace. It was Zelinka's hitting that saved face. His home run bat and powerful right arm was truly feared in Western loop cir- cles. Final Addenda: It is general consensus that had hurler Marty Stiles been in top health, Fairfax would have fared much better. Stiles, a top notch preseason choice for an all league berth was troubled throughout the campaign with back miseries. Len Zelinka Gus Sti les Bob Gerst Sherman Doc trow BEE BASEBALL: FRONT ROW: M. Coach John Hanna's Jayvee baseball team waded into their schedule with high hopes but ran into tougher competition than was expected. Sparked by the all-around playing of Rich Gould who pitched, played shortstop and supplied the winning punch, the Jayvee's produced some good prospects for the Varsity team. Around the infield for the majority of games it was Gene Pender at first, Jack Kemp, Jack Willis, and Bob Brownstien at second, Rich Gould at short, and Don Lyons and Willis at third. And this, without the full services of Selzer, who had prior to the meet sprained his wrist. Lion hopes were further dimmed when it was reported that Bernie Solomon would have to sit the meet out home in bed with the measles. But the gutty homebreds came through. Don Lippmqn's phenomenal 4.9rope climb mark recorded in the league meet spot- lighted another Colonial victory. His time was the fastest hit in City in 1950. Also come through berformances by Al Goutin, Selzer and Don Rosenstock provided the league meet win. Rosenstock surprised all by capturing a blue ribbon in the free ex- ercise. SUMMER GAA TENNIS TEAM It's not any G.A.A. that can boast of so many successful events in one semester that they can't name just which was the best. It might have been the St, Patricks' Day playday at Venice when the Colonial Amazons competed and won in the majority of sports over the home school plus Verdugo Hills, University, and Hollywood, And it could have been the Easter program held in Greenway Court, But the possi- bility of its being the terrific youngster initiation is very strong too. It took a great group of board members and an especially good crop of youngsters to put over these projects, and it took some wonderful of- ficers too. Without Dael Watson's steering and the back seat driving of vice president, Dorothy Paul; treasurer, Jean Sevitz; and secretaries Angie Borja and Joan Tyler, the G,A,A, auto would never have run so straight and true, Peggy Spalt, Commissioner of Girls' Athletics, played traffic cop in this picture and did a grand job.
