MARI LINDBERG —RALPH WALDO EMERSON. administration WILLIAM J. GOODWIN. Principal Vanguards and Dear Camerons: You have been associated together as a class for three years, and it is our hope that the recollection of that experience will remain as one of the happiest in your collection of memories. We believe that each of you while at Fairfax has developed greater faith in himself and acquired new friends. You have been taught that honesty and industry ore prerequisites for good character. How well that lesson has been learned will largely determine your future success. Aloha, and good luckl Sincerely yours, WILLIAM J. GOODWIN You may not realize how great a responsibility you have in the world today. The most important learning is how to meet any crisis with under- standing. Today you cannot afford to be ignorant because ignorance can be the cause of war. It is urgent that you give serious thought to your plans for living in this world. First, it is imperative that every person in this country should advance our democratic principles with all the force, vigor and power within him. Second, it is vital for you as an individual to seek peace with freedom. Third, it is essential for you to recognize that the greatest need of our time is not to know more, but to do better. Let us dedicate our future to building the de- fences of peace and security in the minds of men. Ella Arciniega ELLA ARCINIEGA Girls' Vice-Principal SAMUEL D. OELRICH Boys' Vice-Principal It has been my happy privilege to become a Fairfax Colonial. As the days have become months, I too have learned to love our school. Fairfax is beautiful. Her walks and gardens and Greenway Court are unmatched. But finer yet are her faculty and student body. Friendliness, under- standing, great ability and high standards charac- terize both. There is a spirit, deep, human, and fine, that draws people to us and makes us happy here and loathe to leave. I have gauged the quality and spirit of Fairfax; I know that it is a great experience to be a Colo- nial. I hope to remain a Colonial forever, in spirit if not in person. Samuel D. This has been the most successful term for the Fairfax Reserve Officers Training Corps Battalion in many years. First of the glories was the Blue Devil Trophy awarded for the finest unit in the city of Los Angeles. This was taken under the leadership of Cadet Colonel Richard Sommers. Following this, was the 6th Army Federal Inspection which lasted for on entire day. The results have not os yet been announced: but it is assured that our unit ranked high. In this inspection all phases of R.O.T.C. work were examined. including office facilities, in actual mock battle and sighting exercises. This covered a personal inspec- tion of every Cadet. Shortly after Fairfax A Company, under leadership of Cadet Captain Jerry Glesby, won the British Unit Service Award. This plaque is for outstanding Company in the thirteen City schools. In the city inspection to ascertain the two finest officers in the city. Lieutenant Richard Stern and Robert Hastings placed second and third respectively. Cadet Colonel Robert Goldstein placed second during the fall semester in the same competition. Journeying over to the Coliseum, Fairfax carried off five out of a possible seven trophies, competing with the fpe best units in the county. These trophies were for first place in Battalion. Company. Platoon. Band, and all-around proficiency. We also took a second place in squad competition and fourth place in rifle team. Another award was won for our school by Cadet Colonel Bob Goldstein for third place rifle manual in the county. The fall Military Ball will long be remembered in the annals of history for the spectacular event which occurred then. Bob Hastings, through a quirk of fate and the aid of Truth or Consequences brought Liiabeth Scott. Creating quite a sensation, Miss Scott was most gracious and danced with all the boys who dared to ask her. Special acknowledgment should be given to Colonel Hal Randell. Sergeants Bockall. Bell, and McCoy, and Mr. C. Y. Smith, band instructor, who are greatly responsible for the fine showing. COMPANY A Back Row: S. KAY. L. CANNON. A DONNELLY. S. GOLDSTEIN. R BREWER; Row Thr : H. Students in the eleventh grade are eligible to take Drama I, if they have good grades and a definite interest in the subject. The first semester acquaints the student with stage terms and helps him to feel at ease while performing in front of an audience. Often, there is a need for more people in the Senior Floy, so those who are doing well in Drama I and show a great deal of promise ore given the roles and the valuable experience. Drama II. and III are for the students who have been outstanding in Drama I and who wish to continue. In this year, the Senior Froduction is presented. The students not only act in the play, but are made heads of properties, make-up. and wardrobe. During the first part of the term, students read plays until they decide on the one they wish to present. This last term, they voted on having five one act plays instead of the usual three acts. They chose A Still Alarm , Marriage Has Been Arranged . Happy Journey . Overtones', and The Camel and the Vamp . The students must 'audition' or try out for the part they want in front of a faculty committee. Those who are not chosen work as prompters, heads of committees, understudies, or ore double cast for the play runs two nights. All students take part some way in the production. Following the presentation of the play a vote is taken among the drama classes to choose the best actor and the best actress of the semester. They are presented with an engraved scroll at our annual Academy Award Banquet which is given in Greewoy Court. This semester Fenrod Cohen and Lynn Feinlieb received the awards for their fine characterisations of Ma and Fa in the Happy Journey . Bock Row: E ISENBER6, J WEIN. f. COHEN, S. LEVE. S. LIPPMAN. J. V FOOTBALL SUPPLEMENT Fairfas's Sunset Loop kingpins dominated the All-Western grid selections for the second consecutive year. The 1947 tit lists placed five men on the 12-man squad selected by the Southern California Board of Football. The team is as follows: CHARLES LAUTZ. R.E. E— Bud Heir FAIRFAX FAIRFAX G—Bob Zelinke FAIRFAX FAIRFAX B—Art Yow«ll B—Chuck Etscgien FAIRFAX Bob Zelinka. Lion team captain, was selected at All-League guard for the second consecutive year, and in addition was honored as Player Of The Year in the Western League. Shel Weinberg, pass-snatching junior end. landed a second-string berth to bring the Colonial All-Loop representation to sin—a far cry from the 1945 season, in which the Red and Gold could place only one man on the first two elevens selected. The Lions also made their biggest showing in All-City selec- tions in years. Bob Zelinka held down a first-string guard posi- tion for the second consecutive year, a feat not often accom- plished. Bob was also the only Western leaguer to make the first team. Tom Kemp, the locals stellar signal-caller and passer, gained the blocking back post on the second eleven, while Jerry Moose Finklestein was a popular pick for third team tackle. At the Annual Football dinner. Tom Kemp was selected os the Lions' Most Valuable Player, because of his season-long all- around greatness both on offense and defense. Bob Otto was selected as Most Improved Player for his fine work at center, and Chuck Essegian and Shel Weinberg were made co-captains for the 1948 season. Thus the Lions' greatest football season in ten years came to a successful dimau. Fairtau High School will not soon forget this group of dauntless gridders who overcame all obstacles to give us the Western League crown. GERALD FINKELSTEIN, L.T. Back Row: B CUTHBERT. L. HALFBACK. COACH OAKLAND A FOOTBALL 1947 Coach Frank Shaffer has six returning lettermen on hand to start what was destined to be Fairfax's most glorious grid season since 1937 at the start of pigskin practice this September. In early season pre- dictions, the Colonial eleven was ranked in a four- way tussle for first place in the Western Loop with Dorsey, Venice, and Hamilton. ROMANS RUIN LOCALS The highly-favored Lion club, attempting to shake off an LA jint, went down to another upset defeat on Friday. October 10. Bob Zelinka, Fairfat's magnificent All-City guard and captain, was sidelined during this game with a leg injury; this was directly responsible for the overwhelming 18-0 defeat plastered on the locals by the Pioneers. Roman Jim Pendleton was the outstanding man on the held for the winners, while Chuck Essegian and Jerry Finklestein led the bod I y-out played locals. The only Colonial threat, coming near the end of the first period, was thwarted when Stan Santo s pass was intercepted on the Roman 10. LIONS ROAR. 27-4 Sparked by Bob Zelinka. who ployed a great game, and by the stellar work of Tom Kemp. Shelly Weinberg, and the entire forward wall, the Colonial juggernaut finally went into high gea. trampling a highly-regarded Jordan Bulldog outfit by the overwhelming margin of 27-6. It later developed that this was the largest margin of victory attained by the roaring Lions dur- ing the entire season. One great moment of the game was when Shelly Weinberg intercepted one of Grover Thompson's pitches and galloped 68 yards for a touchdown. Jordan's lone score came in the lost 30 seconds of play, when Grover Thompson fired a 3-yard pitch to Joe Herrington. COLONIALS BOP UNI. 8-6 The Colonial varsity looked ragged, but still could muster enough strength to defeat Unihi4s weak Warriors. Oct. 24 on the local greensward, in the league opener. The final tally was indicative of the closeness of the play. A blocked punt, fallen upon by Injun guard Johnny Sheffield in his own end tone, prov- vided the Lions with a safety in the first period. This proved the bulge of the victory. The Lions' score came on a 41-yord sustained march in the second quarter, with Santo rifling to right half Bud DeLong in the end tone on fourth down. The play was good for 5 yards. Little 130 lb. Louie Cardenas of Uni sprinted 61 yards for a touchdown on the second scrimmage play of the second half. Altogether, this little scatback piled up 141 yards all by his lonesome. This victory was eventually taken from the Lions and awarded Uni by forfeit, owing to the Col- onials' using an ineligible lineman in the tussle. LIONS TRAMPLE VENICE The fightingest Colonial aggregation since the days of Aaron Rosenberg slashed the beefy Venice Gondoliers in a great foot- ball exhibition at the Beachboys' Clark Field on November 13. 20-13. It was the locals' greatest exhibition of the season and stamped them as one of the city's finest elevens. The Roaring Lions were sparked by the great line play of Bob Zelinka. Jerry Finkelstein. Bob Otto, and Shelly Weinberg, the great throwing of Tom Kemp, and the scintillating scampering of midget Bob Rallies. The first Lion score, coming in the initial stanza, wos set up by a Si-yard Kemp-to-Weinberg ploy. After the huge Oarsmen had stopped the locals' bid for glory on the 1. Tom Kemp and Bob Rallies teamed up to carry from the Gondolier 20 to paydirt, with 'Long Tom crunching over guard for the score. Bradish added his fifth conversion of the season. The beginning of the second period saw a veritable sideshow os Venice sctred twice and the Colonials once within two minutes of playing time. Tapp Jones intercepted a Hal Schechtel pass on the Lion 25. lateraled to Roland Marshall, who scored tor the hosts. On the next kickoff, the alert Mr. Jones fell on Johnny Hile's 60-yard end-over-ender tor another tally, while Chuck Essegian stood by. a picture of dejection. Within two plays, the Lions had gone from a 7-0 lead to a 13-7 deficit. This lock of points wos made up immediately afterward, however, as Bob Rallies circled end and raced 63 yards, easily outdistancing his pursuers, for six markers. The touchdown that sewed up the con- test was set up in the fourth quarter by another of Bob's unbe- lievable jaunts, this time a 60-yard tightrope act down the side- lines. Once again the Gondoliers held, but on the next series of downs, Tom Kemp looped a perfect pass into Weinberg's wait- ing arms for a 45-yard payoff play. George Bradish's conver- sion put an end to the Colonials' greatest game. LIONS THUMP RED SHIRTS Playing their fifth consecutive game on home soil, the Colonials wrapped up Hollywood's dark-horse Sheiks. 14-6 in a tussle which had widespread repercussions afterward. Bud De- Long. Johnny Burns. Tom Kemp and Chuck Essegian were the main factors in the locals' fourth consecutive win. The Lions again scored first, when Johnny Burns intercepted one of Frank Sinicrope's aerials on the foe's 26. and ran it to the 1. where upon the selfsame Burns piled over for the tally. Frank Sinicrope engineered a retaliating 62-yard march midway through the second period, bulling over from the 1 himself. The clincher for Fairfax occurred early in the third quarter, and stemmed from a recovered fumble on the Hollyhi 37. Tom Kemp engineered a 9-play drive to pay dirt, with Hal Schechtel squeezing by from the 3-inch stripe. This game was marred by several fist fights and several players being ejected. After the game, alumni and students of the two schools staged a disturbance which brought about the suspension of athletics between Hollywood and the Lions for one year. HAMILTON FALLS. 20-14 Looking like true champions, the Red and Gold locals knocked a big obstacle off the rocky road to the W. L. title October 31. when they downed a hard-luck Hamilton Federalist eleven, 20- 14. Tom Kemp turned in a spectacular game at his QB slot, firing two touchdown passes and scoring the other six himself. Lightning struck with unbelievable suddenness in the first period. After the Lions had driven to their own 45. Chuck Essegian boomed a high punt to Ed Dtmirjian. who fielded the punt on his own 20, and then had the swineskin stolen right out of his arms by Bud Blair, who went to the 15. Four ploys later, big Tom Kemp rammed over from the 2. The next time Fairfax got their mitts on the ball, a 58-yard march took place, with Tom Kemp rifling to Shel Weinberg for 31 yards and the TD. In the second period. Tom again limbered up his shooting arm and lofted a pay-off pass to Bud Blair, who raced 70 yards for the score. Bradish and Fox both boomed conversions to give the Lions a 20-0 lead at halftime. The Yankees fought back like the great team they were, however, and all but took the game away from the Lions, rolling up an aggregate of 320 yards in the process. LIONS COP WESTERN LEAGUE FLAG— BUT NO MILK BOWL Maddened by a ruling which banned them from competition in the P-TA Milk Bowl as a result of the Hollywood fracas, the underdog Colonials blasted Dorsey's defending champs and league leaders. 13-6 on Van Cleve Field, to nail down their first- Sunset Wheel pigskin title since 1937. It was Bob Zelinka, playing one of the greatest games ever seen in Los Angeles prep annals, who led the Lions to their glorious triumph. The inspired locals dealt the startled Green and White, which boasted a string of 15 games without defeat, a knockout blow from which it never recovered, in the first minute of play. Tom Kemp hit Billy Greenberg with all the force of a runaway rocket, and the ball popped away, to be fallen on by Marty Allen on the Don 26. Chuck Essegian. playing his best ball, sliced over tackle and cut wide to his left, crossing the goal with nary a finger laid on him on the very first play. Automatic George Bradish thumped a perfect conversion, to give the locals a lead they never relinquished. Midway through the sec- ond canto, Terrific Tom Kemp lobbed a beautiful 31-yard pass to Bud Blair for the second score. Bob Fox's conversion was wide, giving the locals a 13-0 bulge at halftime. The beginning of the third quarter found the visitors fired up and outqaininq the Lions, but unable to shove more than one tally across. Only the Milk Bowl ban prevented this being Fairfax's greatest foot- ball year. B FOOTBALL Beck Row: K. MITCHELL. H. PENSANTI. R. STEWART L. JARVIS. S. PENSANII. R. PELTZ. S. AJALAT. Fourth Row; L. A BASKETBALL 1947 Coach Keith Lloyd faced the 1947-48 casaba season with three returning lettermen from the '46-'47 City Champs, along with some promising Bee material, on the first day of practice for what was to be a so-so season for the always-powerful Colonial bas- keteers. LIONS ROMP, 53-37 Traveling to Hamilton, the locali whipped one of the city's weaker basket- ball teams, os they easily downed the Yankees, 53-37. It was Dale Lillard once more, playing only half the game, who led all scorers, getting 17. Barry Chosen and Joe Orschanski got 11 apiece for the Lloyd men. who led 34-18 at the half, while Jack Eagen scored 12 for the outclassed Federalists. COLONIALS HOT. 37-36 Dec. 12. 1947. marked the ending of a four-game Dorsey High winning streak, as Coach Keith Lloyd's charges, playing determined ball, made up on 11-point deficit to whip the Dons, 37-36. Joe Orschanski, 6-4 center, was the mainspring in the Lion victory machine, scoring 12 points to cop high point honors. Barry Chosen picked up 10, as did Caballeros Bob Marcus and Bob Woods. After ploying a listless first half, and trailing 20-9. something happened to the Lions, who played a great second half, taking the game by a narrow 1-point bulge. WARRIORS SCALP LIONS In the opening game of the W.L. season, the Lions, with two strikes (two forfeit losses to Hollywood) against them, dropped a 48-40 decision to Uni- versity's smooth-working Warriors. Injun guard Jerry Riffe and local forward Dale Lillard both hit for 14 points and high-point honors, with elongated Joe Orschanski. Lion pivotman. following with 12. The West LA boys led at the half. 20-18. but opened up a huge lead in the third stoma, coasting to victory despite Lillard's late point-getting. DONS TOP CRIPPLED COLONIALS. 47-32 Knocked out of the City playoffs by the ineligibility of Barry Chosen, Joe Orschanski, and Len Rubenstein, the Lions, fighting a stronger Dorsey aggre- gation. went down to a 47-32 defeat in the game which rang down the curtain for the 48 season. With set-up artist Jerry Marcus dropping in 20 points, the Dons won with room to spare, but not without a scare. Midway in the third period, the Lions, with Dale Lillard. Dave Janssen, and Fred Leeds sparking the attack, crept to within 5 points of the Green-clad visitors. Dale Lillard led the Colonial attack, notching 13 points, while Janssen hit four long fieldies for eight counters. LIONS WIN 2. LOSE 4 IN PRACTICE In practice tilts, what was to become glaringly evident later on came to light: namely, that the Lion defense left something to be desired. In pre- season tiffs, the Colonial five downed Van Nuys, 38-23. and Manual Arts (later Southern Loop champs), 48-45, while losing two to Loyola. 31-30 in the last seconds, and 44-26. bowing to a powerful Glendale Hoover club, 48-40, and losing to arch-rival LA. 49-34. High scorers for the Colonials in these games were dead-eye forwards Dale Lillard and Barry Chosen, with 56 and 61 points, respectively. COLONIALS BOP VENICE Hitting their best stride of the year, the Colonial five walloped Venice's Oarsmen. 44-26. on January 13, os the Lions' 1-2 punch of Dale Lillard. who tanked 14 points, and Barry Chosen, who hit for 11. proved too much for Ben MacFarland's boys. Starting slowly, and leading by 2 points at the half, the Lions made a farce of the game in the lost half. Dick Saner, highly-regarded Venetian, was held to 1 point by the alert Lion guards, which probably accounted for the win. GONDOLIERS SHADE LIONS In a thrill-soaked contest on the local maples. Venice's up-and-down Gon- doliers dumped an equally inconsistent Lion quintet, 52-49, with a terrific second-half splurge netting the triumph for the Oarsmen. Venice's Dick Saner, later named All-City Player of the Year, and Colonial Dale Lillard staged a two-man show both tallying 21 points, to capture high-point laurels. Senti- nel Dave Janssen of the Lloydsters and center Bob Murray of the Blue and White followed with 12 and 11. respectively. At the half, the Crimson-and- CHASEN STARS IN WIN OVER YANKS The local bucket brigadeers brought their record back to .500 by again trouncing the hapless Hamilton Federalists. 52-36. using a makeshift lineup due to the illness of Dale Lillard, Joe Orschanski. and Jerry Evans. Barry Chosen went wild for the Lloyd men. waving the meshes for 21 points. 11 on free tosses, while Len Rubenstein rang the bell for 11. At the half, the Lions held a commanding 27-11 lead, and coasted through the final periods to a win. UNI THUMPS LOCALS AGAIN Out on the Westwood hardwood of University High, the local casaba war- riors receipted for their worst loss in four years, going down to the Warriors. 51-32. The Colonials, known to be a hot-and-cold team, hit their coldest streak on that day, as they could score but 6 points in a dismal first half which saw Jerry Marvin's Warriors pull out to a 22-point lead. Ronnie Gor- ver. Jerry Marvin. Jr., and Jerry Riffe led the hosts' scoring parade, with 15. 13. and 10. respectively, while Barry Chosen was the locals’ lone shining light with 13 frigid digits. In this game, the Colonials were deprived of the serv- ices of both their angular pivotmen. Orschanski and Jerry Evans, benched by Bu. LATE NOTES ... Cub guard-forward, went on a wild scoring spree, scoring 62 points os the Lions won from Venice and University, and bowed to Dorsey and Hamilton. In the Venice game. Sherry plunked 19 digits, 17 in the second half, to spark a 34-27 triumph; against Dorsey, he hit for 16. 13 in the second half, to almost upset the Don Juniors, JO-29. Out at Unihi, Norm flipped in 17 digits, the majority in the late mo- ments, to lead a 36-25 win. while he cooled off with only 10 points against hard-pressing Hamilton, joining his teammates, who dropped a 41-27 nod. Gil Warner made 21 points during this period, to follow Sherry in Lion point- getting. LIONS WIN FINALE. 39-32 As Norm Sherry and Dorsey's Marv Blumenthal waged a scoring battle, the rest of the Lion Bee quintet successfully staved off a late Dorsey rally to win their last game of the year. 39-32. Sherry and Blumenthal finally wound up with 14 apiece, while Eddie Berlin, Sid Snyder, and Gil Warner, scored 6. 5. and S. apiece, for the winners. Dick Davis. Lion guard, turned in a nice defensive performance. UNIHI BUMPS CUBS Strengthened by Norm Sherry's return from the Varsity, the Colonial Bees dropped their first Western Loop encounter. 32-24. but not without a battle. The Lions led at halftime. 15-11, finally weakening in the stretch. Eddie Berlin led the Colonials with 5 points. CUBS LOSE TO GONDO-BABES With the Hademen lacking their customary second-half splurge, Venice’s Bee Oarsmen walked off with a 28-22 decision, January 13, on the winners' floor. As per usual. Norm Sherry stole the show for the locals, picking up f2 more points, while Joe Stern of the Beachbabes got 9. THE LAST WORD... With the end of the year. Crippin's Colonial gym team enjoyed their most suc- cessful season in sit years during the year of 1948. The Red-and-Gold-clad fiexers garnered second place in the Western Loop, and placed seventh in City-wide competition. LIONS WIN ONE OF THREE In practice tiffs, the local gymnasts, facing a rugged schedule won one. while dropping two. The Lion contingent dropped a heart-breaking 6D i- 591 2 decision to Manual Arts, falling down in the usually-impregnable free- ex event. Roosevelt's city champs then dealt the Crippin Crew a 76-44 shellacking. The Lions got back on the winning track against strong Mar- shall. in their last practice meet, bopping the Barrister brigade. 72 2-47 2. Capt. Johnny Carter personally accounted for the Lawyer downfall in the latter meet, racking up 18 points, m COLONIALS CRUSH UNI Meeting a still-green Unihi team in their first loop encounter, the Fairfax musclemen romped off with an easy 82-38 victory. The Fairtaxers placed 1-2-3 on the rope, with Lee Strifling copping firjt via a 6.9s ascent. Johnny Carter and George Green tied for first in free-ex, while Marv Wartnik led the Lion jockeys to a 1-2-3-4 performance on the side horse. Herb Frank- lin annexed the long horse, with three other Colonials following behind, to ice the meet for the homebreds. RED-HOT LIONS SMASH VENICE Reaching their peak in excellence, the as-yet-undefeated Lion gymnasts blasted an invading Venice High contingent all over the local gym. routing the Beachboys. 79, j- 0% on March 3. The Beachboys picked up only one first place. Don Perry, junior rope climbing sensation, lipped up the 2S-foot hemp in 4.7s. Don later broke the 2S-foot record in 4.3s. and the 20-foot mark in 3.1 s. Johnny Carter, just recovered from an illness which had kept him on the sidelines for almost a week, led the Crippinmen to victory, tallying IS points on his own hook. Marv Wartnik and Larry Hyman con- tinued on their merry ways, outdistancing their respective fields easily to take additional Lion firsts. Don Hollis topped high-bar competitors, while Norm Carkeek tied for first on the parallels. Herb Franklin and Bill Soursby shared long-horse honors to end the Colonial first-placing for the day. HAMI JUNKS LION TITLE HOPES In a battle of undefeated squads. Hamilton completely routed the Lion fiexers on March 10, 74-46. The locals dropped sin straight games, not including their automatic losses to Hollywood, before pulling a 4-1 game out of the fire against the fifth-place Venice Gondoliers. They then concluded their Loop slate on a brilliant pitching performance by Lefty Tom Kemp, who twirled a four-hitter against Dorsey's co-champ Dons. The pitching job was the standout performance in an otherwise dismal year for Coach Frank Shaffer's Lions. As the Colonial goes to press, the Lions had come through the first round of the Dorsey Baseball Tournament with flying colors, vanquishing Verdugo Hills' Dons. 7-2. behind another four-hit job by Tom Kemp. For the year. Chuck Essegian led the Lions of bat, compiling a .320 batting average. Tom Kemp was second at .273, while Stan Santo hit .263 for third position. JAY VEE BASEBALL Coach John Hanna's charges completed their first season as a Junior Varsity baseball outfit with a record almost identical to that of the varsity, winning 2 while losing 8. The only difference between the two lay in the fact that the JV’s won their games from University and Venice. Starring for the JV's were pitcher George Grant, who was the winning pitcher in both Colonial triumphs, first baseman George Mancuso, who connected for two homerun blasts, and third sacker George Gottesman. who led the club in hitting.
