It’s time to take a bigger step in life now. I'll be away from my friends but I'll never forget them. I'll never forget the good times that I spent with the best of friends. Recorded, filed, extracted, dusted and then refiled again, but not forgotten. Yesterday — painted with fractions of love, hate, windy smiles and _helium-filled balloons of hope. Fragments eased patiently hard, patiently fast; yet not without pain, each biting into my memory as would a razor. And yet my time here has been the finest I have ever known — thank you. Parker, Jr. and Dianne Yow 50 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY THE WAY WE WERE 1971-75 Julie crept in an escape artist, “rushed” afew people out and left a “professional.” Kate began in Weejuns, changed to riding pants, and ended up with jeans. Groon came in for first and second periods, took a break, came back in time for graduation. Ann hopped in throwing firecrackers and left a friendly Daughter of the American Revolution. 1972-75 Kim Davis tiptoed in feeling down, got to know the barn and the field, and left upward bound. Katie came in with an “Anne Frank” diary, changed her life style a bit, but still left a scholar. Mary Esther looked at Fairfax over her glasses, decided to stay and argue her point and left winning it. Marlean skipped in with pigtails, climbed over mountains in Vermont, and painted her way out. Spas stumbled in on two left feet, tripped, and left on two right feet (bent cigarette and all). Gigi hit Fairfax with one vocabulary word — goozleburg, learned some new jokes, and left laughing. Charlie tripped in, became a meanie, and rushed out. 1972-75 Lee came in a southern statesman, cooled a lot of hot heads, and left a social organizer. Helen “holaed” in, infected us with her contagious laughter, and “Pabloed” out. Jill walked in, flew around, and left a trail of broken hearts. Annette drifted in mute, asked a few too many questions, and left talking up a storm. Kim Marshall came in liking Wayne and left loving him. Mudd strolled in, headed toward the phone, acquired a severe case of dialitis, and left us with a Tally Ho. Wes came in, wrote for a while, and chuckled out. Cathy jogged in searching, found a sunny spot, and left on a cloud of elation. Janie trotted in on Siraff, rose to the top, and left fighting for the little guys. Dianne Yow floated in singing rhymes, picked a few tunes, and left a “lady of the island.” 1974-75 Salle Bell flashed in, focused on Fairfax, and shuttered out. Kim Biliter tooted in, had a blast with the juniors, and took off with the seniors. Onna came in quietly, set a few people straight, and jaunted off to New York. Melanie came in subdued, made a few bets, and left many a friend. Pam came in an ingenue, and left strictly vogue. Susan jogged in ball in hand, appointed a d ictator, and left a Mother Superior. Sue rode in with Terry, tried to stay awake in P.O.D., succeeded, and rode out on Walnut. Shelly slipped in, found an orange Volkswagon, and left with a new phone number. Nancy came in blinding people with her braces, handed out popcorn comforts, and left as she came in, smiling. Maggot walked in knowing the future of “The Young and the Restless,” was immediately accepted, and left waiting for her prediction to come true. 51 SENIOR SUPERLATIVES — MIIDRIORAT ORY SOc FHRHOHNODADE Ad = we wt wv i. Friendly, quiet little streams that join them in their long troublesome journey to the sea make them strong and mighty. The helpful contributions of love and kindness we gain from friends make our journey of life better and richer. Congratulations to the class of 1975 and best wishes to everyone. DAVIS (Sally’s parents) Shawnee Mission, Kansas JUST FOR TODAY: Just for today I will try to live through this day only and not tackle my whole life problem at once. I can do something for 12 hours that would appall me if I felt that I had to keep.it up for a lifetime. Just for today I will be happy. This assures to be true what Abraham Lincoln said: “Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Just for today I will try to strenghten my mind. I will learn something useful. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways: I will do someone a good turn, and not get found out; I will do at least two things I don’t want to do — just for exercise; and today, if my feelings are hurt, I will not show it to anyone. Just for today I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit, and not try to improve or regulate anybody except myself. Just for today I will have a quiet half-hour all by myself for meditation and relaxation. During this half-hour I will try to get a better prespective on my life. Just for today I will be unafraid. Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful and to believe that as I give to the world the world will give to me. — Anonymous. Congratulations and Best Wishes to the Seniors. MR. My mind is no longer with me, And all I want is simply to be free. But my feelings for life, now, have surely changed, Everything is so distorted and so awfully strange. I can’t erase the past from my mind, How can my life become tied-up in such an unreal bind? All I seem to do is endlessly cry, When all I want to do is give up and not try. I don’t want to simply run away, And yet at times, it’s so damn hard to stay. Did I care too much again? For now she has left me, my best friend. She was always there for me to turn to, And I sit and ask myself, “Now who?” But I guess Il] never know, Because the pain is far too deep to go. Noble Maxwell, president of the new Fairfax Hall, states that the school for young women will be opened in the former Brandon Hotel, purchased for that purpose last summer. Mr. Maxwell, who is a former Stauntonian and during recent years was successful business manager of Lewisburg Seminary, has prepared a handsome -catalogue for Fairfax Hall.” - A later newspaper article reported; “The opening of Fairfax Hall has made the twin cities (Waynesboro and Basic City) richer by ninety- seven young ladies representim@g twé : ty-eight states and foreign coun- tries.” eta es So the new school came ars hciieimaccesding an earlier Brandon - Institute which had operated in the same building from 1911] to 1919. Under the Maxwell administration Fairfax Hall made rapid progress both in the academic field and in improvements to the physical plant. The gymnasium with indoo poobwas built in 1926-27 of English half-timers and stucco on a base of North Carolina granite. The out- door pool was added as a lands shee abit the stable was built; and extensive plantings of holly, magnoli®, and dogwood were made on its wooded campus. Following Mr. Maxwell’s death on March 26, 1932, the school was headed by his widow, Mrs@Octavia Goode Maxwell, and his late sister, Miss Frances May Maxwéll. In June, 1936, the Fairfax properties were purchased by the late William Benjamin Gates, Sr., then president of Blackstoneff@ollege ho established an accredited junior college department, ewlarged dtademic course offerings, and strengthened the physical education and fine arts program. A new dor- mitory was built in 1948 affo @ing rooms for additional students and improved classroom and laboratory f cilities. The junior college department was discontinued in 1956 to concentrate in the preparatory school field. William Benjamin Gates, Sr., died on July 6, 1959, after serving as president of Fairfax Hall from 1936 and after more than fifty-seven years of service in the field of public and independent school educa- tion. He was succeeded by his son, Fairfax Hall’s academic dean, William Banjamin Gates, Jr., wee continued as the school’s fourth chief administrative officer until his Bence in 1973.
