Only the memory Lingers On the breath Of the wind For they have Gone on T o rtourish A new growth, A new hope. — Julie Pecpham “ Roots and leaves unlike any but themselves, They are comprised in you just as much as in themselves — perhaps more than in themselves, They are not comprised in one season or succession, but many successions, They have come slowly up out of the earth and me, and are to come slowly up out of you.” — Walt Whitman We would like to dedicate “Roots and Leaves” to one who has greatly dedicated herself to our growth and happiness, Mrs. Mildred Taylor Smith. I may not reach them, but I can loo up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead. ' — Louisa May Alcott SENIOR CLASS HISTORY September, 1962, marked the beginning of the lengthy, memorable toil which has finally terminated. Probably the first girl to be reprimanded by Mrs. Feeley in the freshman dorm was Glenna Yoakum. “It ' s time for all the little sisters to leave, said Mrs. Feeley on the opening night of school. Judy Blanton was elected our class president and seemed to acquire a few more presidencies throughout the years. “La, la, la, la, la” was the familiar tone of Faye Bratten while she was in the shower, but Sheron Henderson exercised her vocal cords by talking to one of her boy friends on the phone, or vigorously cheering for the halls of ivy. Jay Branson hailed from Charlotte, North Carolina, and kept up the good name of the South. Along came Lynne Slattery who always seemed to have the problem of choosing between her boy friends and her horses. Nancy Wall displayed the signs of great athletic ability despite the fact that she was known for her bowlegs. Ellyn Felburn became famous for all of her diets which she started but could not maintain through even a single meal. Changing their hair color was as simple a thing for Elaine Jarvis and Liz Ligon as changing clothes was for most girls. In our sophomore year Mitzi Grubb arrived from New Tazewell, Tennessee, with the most gorgeous collection of gems possible Penni Harmon was known for her Bach and Beethoven at 7 :00 in the morning and her collection of scabs. Her roommate, Sharon Ochsman, had the habit of wrapping her head in a towel and praying to Allah. What a pair! Susan Lowery came a little late, probably because she had to make the long trip from Maine. Poppy Larkins always seemed to be at the stable. Her efforts must have paid off because her favorite color was usually blue. Les Thurston came surfing in from Virginia Beach with her guitar and bright yellow surfboard. Drue Slaughter came with her natural ability for speaking the French language. 44 The tallest of all the girls, Gail Thompson, was plagued with having the smallest room on sophomore hall. At the beginning of second semester Diane Schneider arrived from Texas to give fast talking lessons and to show us how to stick three thousand words in one sentence. The junior year brought Bebe Coggins with her ability to speak Spanish with a slow, southern drawl. Doreen Godwin won the record for getting more bruises than any other senior. The most gregarious senior, Betsy Chapman, came with her aversion to unnamed stuffed animals and her love for vacations. Fashion stepped into the senior class when Dawn Price and Missy Archer brought — how many closets full of clothes? Diane Menzies got indigestion, not from the food, but from swallowing too many contact lenses. It was hard to decide which Lindy Nolan loved more — blue XK E ' s or horses. The initial “W” also seemed to be magic in her life. Crash diets hit the hall when Susan Bell and Susi Smith seemed to be trying to lose fifty pounds in a week. Judy Willenzik came a few days late because she was trying to soak up every bit of the Florida sun before she left. Barbara and Jean McLean hailed from Arkansas. Barbara became known for her razor- back flags and pennants while Jean was preoccupied with her never-ceasing struggle to write Bruce. Carole Conn came with the idea of running a race with Rapunzel to see who could grow the world ' s longest hair. Julie Peckham bounced in with her famous golden tresses and her ever-present smile. Frances Coffey came “stomping” in with her corrective shoes and will go stomping out with unknocked knees. Holly Bingham brought along her love for Stingrays. She seems to have to purchase a new one each year. In February Carol Powell came dancing into the class and will undoubtedly go dancing out. Laura Gordon set the record for lighting more cigarettes than any other senior, and thus acquired her nickname, “Flint.” The class was thus assembled and ready for the senior year. It was filled with memorable toil and will end with joy, tears, laughter, and sorrow. 45 Laura Gordon, Elaine Larkins, Nancy Wall, Carole Conn, Miss Brinsdon SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Elaine Larkins President Laura Gordon Vice President Carole Conn Secretary Nancy Wall Treasurer Susan Bell President’s Council Representative Leslie Thurston Athletic Association Representative Miss Betty Brinsdon Sponsor 46 MELINDA HOLLISTER ARCHER Ilel Air. I repeat to you what she told me about thirty-seven girls from Fairfax Hall. She gazes at the future in a mirror in her hand; yet sometimes things are obscured by her long, white tresses. She bade me enter and kneel at her feet; with head bowed, my lips poured forth my supplications. As I called the names of my old friends she told me what she saw. Campaigning hard with honesty and straightforwardness brought the governorship of Tennessee to Mitzi Grubb. The politician, known for all of her tact, is Congressional filibusterer Lynne Slattery. Vices and virtues in a philosophical heap are poetized by Sharon Ochsman. Faye Bratten is our new head of The Peace Corps after Sargent Shriver’s successor’s demise. Diane Menzies is a well-known banker who sits in her mansion on Park Avenue in New York. Nancy Wall, a celebrated singer and dancer, manages her own firm which manufactures basketballs. Fashion is a big part of Dawn Price’s life, whether she is mowing a lawn or attending a ball. Chemical-minded Suzie is now the head of the Albert Einstein Research Laboratory. After working hard to become a nurse, Judy Blanton is now Virginia Beach ' s top surfer resuscitator. Chapman is known throughout the world as an interior designer, her most famous work being displayed in the Skaneateles town hall. Laryngitical Ellyn has reached her ultimate glory by publishing a book on diets. Artisans are few in this world and blossoms seldom cling to the vine but Doreen and Drue have become famous for the many records they have made. After many years of careful consideration the Ku Klux Klan has announced that the new head of the organization is Bebe Coggins. There are many firsts in our group. For example, Penni is now the first woman president of Sigma Chi. With her own unique style, Julie’s art work has been unsuccessfully copied the world around. Off in the future I see our youngest, Glenna, who has become one of the finest Shake- spearean actresses of the age, while Holly’s pad in the Village is the beatniks’ Arthur. 86 And here’s another first! Barbara and Jean are the University of Arkansas’ first women twin presidents! Out in Indianapolis Cassandra sees Lindy racing XK-E’s. On the rockbound coast of Maine living in seclusion is the poet and writer, Susan Lowery. And young Gail, though not known for writing or sports, is now followed around by ten tiny basketball players. Contrary to all predictions, there is Liz, Ligon, who has become a devoted historian. In sports the class of ’66 seems to take the lead for Poppy’s the accomplished Olympic horse trainer. Susan Bell is head of the Board of Visitors at the LUiversity of Virginia and the mirror tells us that she does the work for a very menial sum. Let us not forget romance! Sheron’s job as secretary would be dull indeed if Bond were not her boss. As for Missy, the mirror grows dim; let me see! Oh, yes, she’s an ’86 flapper in New York City. In France, at the Dior lounge, Laney has become one of his top models. And in New Orleans the name of Willenzik is known for gala social events of which Judy herself is always queen. On a more serious note, Frankie went on to get her Ph.D. in English and is now head of that department at the University of Tennessee. Carol Powell has not changed, according to the mirror. The reason is that she just never grew up! In the literary field Carole Conn has made many contributions; her latest book is entitled ’’Man Handling.” Off Malibu Beach our Leslie has perfected the art of living on a surf board. In New York Laura’s salon has become America’s best-known house of fashion. And in Dallas with rings and a Texas drawl we see Diane who has become the wife of an oil king. Jay Branson is now living in Italy and is known as the world’s top spaghetti connoisseur. Cassandra’s prophecy ceased and I was left kneeling at her feet. As I began to rise she intoned: “Dear mortal, the time passes and years go by, but the essence of life is memories. Whether or not my mirror has been truthful, remember that these people are what they mean to you.” 87 Seated: Mrs. Smith, Mr. Gates, Glenna Yoakum Standing: Linda Lemay, Bebe Coggins, Betty Pritchard, Susan Bell, Ann Allen, Elaine Jarvis, Carolyn Bailey, Cindy Crawford, Carol Sue Robinson THE PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL Glenna Yoakum Mr. W.
