THE HISTORY OF THE SENIOR CLASS “Fantasia 196 ” began in September of 1961. Our journey from the Freshman dorm to Senior Hall has been a happy, though sometimes tearful, one. We will never forget the Halls of Ivy and we hope that our spirit will always remain here. The journey began when the freshman dorm was invaded by two artists, Betsy and Nancy, who made the record, “She’s A Nag,” an international sensation. As the applause subsided, Norrie came somersaulting down the hall to lead the class in the most uproarious cheer of the year. Donna promptly filled the hall with souvenirs of Richmond. When a rare quiet moment descended upon the dorm, it was immediately shattered by fits of hysterics from Candy, Janet and Carolyn. Mrs. Feeley was usually to be found close at hand. When Caroline wasn’t on the tennis courts, she was practicing skiing down the stairs. After light bell the unusual atmosphere underwent a drastic change from “She’s a Nag” to “He Loves Me” by Annie and Sucanne. During the show’s intermission everyone retired to Paula’s room to view her portraits of Frankie and Perry. The second stage of our journey began when Judy invaded room 213 in her sneakers, and Stewart parked her surfboard on sophomore wing. Myra and Kay brought a huge collection of labels: Weejuns, Villagers and McMullens. True love invaded our class when Eve met Jimmy at S.M.A. Kathy’s romances may not have been true love, hut they did have variety. Miller discovered that there is more than one use for a coke machine. Janis came down from Chicago with all the latest modeling tricks. Corinne drove up in a Mercedes filled with her fantastic wardrobe. She and Suzi spent hours trying to cram their clothes into the tiny closets on the wing. The wing’s last contribution was brought by Linda with her ra- diant rays from Miami. 56 Pat went to the infirmary every morning after “A Hard Day’s Night.” Paige brought her long hair and Yankee accent; both have diminished through the years. Liz and Christie didn’t quite make it for the first day, hut they quickly made up for lost time. The third stage of our journey to Senior Hall began when Julie and Mitsy appeared with num ' erous pieces of athletic equipment. In contrast to their great athletic prowrcss Starr and Gretchen descended upon the Fairfax stage with all the dignity of Helen Hayes. Barbara and Kathie soon made their presence known on sophomore wing. Harriet and Carol brought many new love problems for us to solve in our spare time. The West Virginians, Harriet and Kathie, were joined by Carolyn Buffington. Kitty and Freda joined the ranks of Junior Wing and made drastic inroads on the prevailing peace and quiet. Our class was completed by the addition of Martha, better known as Frye. She brought a love for Tennessee, her own personal joke book, and the Frye Dictionary. Thus assembled we embarked on our senior year, the last stage of our journey. It has been a year filled with memories, tears, and laughter. Our Ring Figure and May Day will always live in our hearts. The procession down the hill and the ceremonies in the church will be a fitting end to “Fantasia 1965.” 57 Norrie Baxter Class Beauty Paul Iverson Nancy Biehle Most Studious Wittiest i t i j i I Myra Ficklen Most Li ely to Succeed mh I JV- 1 ft t ■jjjOjyK Paige Bitner Most Athletic Donna Carter Most Talented Betsy Elsas Most Popular Judy Kemp Most Versatile C] . 1.- PROPHECY OF THE CLASS OF 1965 The year is 1980, fifteen years after the class of 65 has given its laurel chain away. The class is holding its reunion at Oxford where Dr. Fritsche, who is a world expert on the Elizabethan Era, is head professor in the English Department. Kathy Glatfelter, who now owns Saks, is calling the meeting to order. She can hardly recognize her classmates. Ah, here comes Carolyn White with a string of little Fishhurne cadets behind her. It seems she’s now the head housemother there. She is followed by Paige Bitner who has gone into business with Mitsy Prichard and Julie Koelle. They have become world ' renowned for their women ' s gymnastic salon. We have quite a few celebrities among us. There are Betsy Elsas and Janis Vogel who are fa- mous Vogue models. Starr Roach and Myra Ficklen, whose numbers have been written by Eve Smith and choreographed by Nancy Biehle, are known in Las Vegas as the Carolina Babies. They just burst into their rendition of “Nothing Could be Fina.’’ Instantaneously, Annie Harris begins signing book leaves from her latest Pulitzer Prize winner My Life Among the Oil Wells, and Har- riet Lehman and Carol Moore sign their famous Tigas. Candy Peck also appears on the scene with her turquoise poodle — as she describes it — “to match my eyes, dahling!’’ After Kathy finally gets things settled more of our old friends start coming in. There are Stew- art Dickson, Kay Craig, and Judy Kemp, the only governors in history to serve more than two terms. Theirs was a tri-governorship. Here come three members who make their homes in Africa — Martha Frye, the famous Tiger trainer who successfully put one in her tank, and Kathie Squibb and Linda Russell, famous for subduing numerous native rebellions there. Susan Miller just ran across the room towards the refreshment table. She is now a distinguished gourmet, acknowledged for her re- search in the effects of eating. 60 Christie Lamb and Suzi Prager just came in. They are interpreters at the U. N. Suzi recently got her Ph.D. at the Sorbonne. They are followed by five celebrities: Donna Carter, Barbara Brew- ster, and Kitty Caye, an acclaimed folk ' singing group called the Faxettes; Freda D rewry, now a fulb fledged Beatle; and Gretchen Graves, the famous artist. Following them are Pat Ffand, Susie Wootten and Norrie Baxter, escorted by their good-looking husbands and several children. Corinne Barbour hushed the crowd as she slinks in with her mink dragging on the floor. Whispers are heard that she is now a professional debutante. Janet Gugeb mann follows with her wild French Riviera attire. Iverson and Liz Chambers arrive, carrying their philosophy books and their theses concerning the socio-economic significance of the Taft-Hartley Act. Bellowing over the confusion, Caroline Wilson is trying to explain her techniques in ski instruction to Carolyn Buffington, who is more con- cerned with the literary deficiency of West Virginia. “Silence!” screams Kathy. “You act as if this is the Smoker back at Fairfax. I am glad you all could make it. Although there have been quite a few changes, I think we are still the Class of ’65. Now I’m sure we would all like to hear from our favorite class sponsor. Dr. Fritsche.” Everyone applauds as Miss Fritsche takes her place at the speaker’s stand. After a long ora- tion on the symbolism of hand motions in Macbeth, everyone rushes for the refreshment table. (Does that sound familiar?) The room is filled with much disturbance as everyone tries to show off her husband. Oh dear, what is all the commotion at the other end of the hall? It looks like Dean Gates. It is Dean Gates! It seems Dr. Fritsche forgot to tell us that he is the Academic Dean at Oxford! Poor fellow! Everyone is screaming at him about that government final fifteen years ago. The Carolina Babies are doing one of their famous numbers for him; Iverson, Chambers and Harris are ramming books down his throat; and Martha Frye is begging him to pet her favorite tiger, Rob- bins. Well, we will leave the scene as usual in a state of utter confusion as the orchestra blares over the noise with a chorus of “Tonight.” 61 Seated: Leslie Thurston, Judy Blanton Standing: Miss Tyler, Penni Harmon, Suzanne Hurdle JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Judy Blanton President Penni Harmon Vice-President Leslie Thurston Secretary Suzanne Hurdle Treasurer Miss Allene Tyler Sponsor 02 CLASS OF 1966 Susan Alexander Versailles Kentucky Robin Barr Fort Lauderdale Florida Holly Bingham Panama City Florida Beth Bowland Seaford Delaware Melinda Archer Bel Air Maryland Susan Bell Potomac Maryland Judy Blanton Richmond Virginia Jay Branson Charlotte North Carolina 63 THE JUNIORS Nancy Carrell Louisville Kentucky Faye Bratten Virginia Beach Virginia Frances Coffey Tazewell Tennessee Betsy Chapman Skaneateles New York Carole Conn Coco Solo Canal Zone Bebe Coggins Elberton Georgia Ellyn Eelburn Tuxedo North Carolina Charlene Dessauer Cincinnati Ohio 64 CLASS OF 1966 Doreen Godwin Millshoro Delaware Laura Gordon Dallas Texas Mitzi Grubb New Tazewell Tennessee Penni Harmon Cuernavaca Mexico Sheron Henderson Richmond Virginia Nancy Huntington Paris France Suzanne Hurdle Elizabeth City North Carolina Lindsey Ison Atlanta Georgia 65 THE JUNIORS Elaine Jarvis Ocean City Maryland Donna Lantz Orlando Florida Mildred Leonard Fort Lauderdale Florida Linda Johnson Beachwood New Jersey Elaine Larkins Cloudland Georgia Elizabeth Ligon Brookeville Maryland 66 CLASS OF 1966 Barbara McLean Little Rock Arkansas Jean McLean Little Rock Arkansas Diane Menzies Hickory North Carolina Lindy Nolan Boca Raton Florida Martha Nunnally Atlanta Georgia Sharon Ochsman Washington D.
