Woodward FAIRFAX HALL 63 “No, Mrs. Morrow, I said it was Mother, not Michael.” ! © =e | a HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1964 Our momentous story begins on September 21, 1960. The pioneers of the class of 1964 began leaving their marks on the halls and walls of Fairfa x Hall. This story is composed mainly of char- acters and circumstances with whom and under which the class thrived and survived. This “nonfictional” story unfolds in the room occupied by Elise White. She and Val Orth were constantly mumbling, “First Latin killed the Romans and now it’s killing us!” A voice is heard from the opposite end of the hall—it was only Lynda Gellatly exercising her vocal cords with great gusto. The battle post of the hall was Room 32 where Grant and Lee presided. They were really Laney Shepard and Pam Peck. But they might as well have been Grant and Lee—they fo ught the Civil War enough. Romance was the motto of Jennifer Place and Ingrid Hein. Ingrid had an unusually strong fascination for Gardner McKay and J. J. was frequently spied on at her Monday afternoon rendez: vous. While J. J. and Ingrid indulged in romance, Jill Byrd hit the books and was the first of our class to make the Dean’s List. From the booming metropolis of Afton Cubby Hubbard and Gail Campbell came to join the group. Lastly Rusty Shepherd arrived with her renowned ‘weiner roll.” Thus ends the first chapter of this story. September, 1961, rolled around and the class had some new and unusual additions. Our first was Candy Connors who had “rings on her fingers and bells on her toes” . . . and her roommate, Bette Hankal, noted for her coordination in the pool, as well as around it. Marty Atwood was a real “beat” and was usually found fully clothed in the shower or sitting in the trash can in deep concentration. Another in that category was Mary Ann McKinney who played basketball but not in the way that the rules dictated. Rather unusual! “Eda was here” was the cry one night on third floor wing but, instead of Eda James, Sallie Smith popped out of the shower. She was trying to entertain Les Parkin who had been having trouble con- cerning when and where she should smoke. Linda LuBow was envied by all the girls for her beautiful “‘all year ‘round tan.” While Peppie Harris sewed headbands after light bell Linda was baking under a sunlamp. Another exciting moment on the hall was the night when Susan Goff got so wrapped up in her Junior Life Saving that she tried to get Iris Cudd into a chin carry . . . in the bathtub. 64 As second semester began two new recruits arrived . . . Sara Dienst who had an unusual knack for cleaning trash cans and Kay Bailey who brought a gadget that was a flashlight as well as a blanket vacuum cleaner. She always had to vacuum her blankets after light bell. What a year. .. end of chapter two! Our junior year arrived with a bang. First Pattie Borrison came with her talent for keeping a neat “woom” and then Diane Clark hit the hall with a year’s supply of gym excuses. While those oppressed by Geometry ran to Nancy Smith for help, Susan Ford and Peggy Swart clung to one another for support in the trials and tribulations of their love lives. When we went to town for a slight breather from the old grind we would usually congregate in the Southern, but Sherry Webb had a special attachment for Haney’s and Margie Gibbons found the Man’s Shop quite appealing. Pat Simpson was usually in a tizzy at Newberry’s trying to decide whether to buy Bazooka or Double Bubble. When Saturdays and Sundays came, Sammie Sample usually found herself in a predicament . . three boys but only one Sammie. On the weekdays Diane Walsh tried to convince herself that French isn’t hard and DeeDee Raines was only worried about where she got the dent in the back of her father’s car over the weekend. As the months passed by, the hair went straight and the quantity of make-up applied was scarce. It was as if 177 Frankensteins were walking the halls. At the same time everyone knew something was wrong if Mary Rohmann did not have a smile for someone, or Jill George wasn’t on a horse, or Sarah Woodward wasn’t scoring points, or Beth Witcher wasn’t speaking in a foreign language, or Carolyn Harrell wasn’t on Dean’s List. The infirmary wing has never been the same since Susan Good and Mary Kay Taylor left, a little quieter and more peaceful maybe, but not the same. When the heat was on you could usually find Gena Molette scoring points on the basketball court and Beverly Pandapas cheering the team on with great vigor. While Pinky Maier suffered it out on Senior Hall with Mrs. Thomas Hart Benton and friend, Mel, alias Melfred, Wilson pondered over which of her nightgowns to wear. With our junior class assembled progress was made on junior dance. A few unforeseen acci- dents occurred; the ceiling fell, but all ended well. Chapter three closed with the singing of the Senior Song after Laurel Chain. Chapter four began as the class gathered for our senior year. Plans were made for Ring Figure which was the high point of the year. Miss Brown added a little variety to the usual May Day program by presenting the Shakespearean play, “As You Like It.” As the end of this eventful story is nearing and the class of ’64 stands together for the last time, we can truly say, “Memories are made of this!” 65 The date is June 6, 1979—fifteen years after our graduation. The class of 64 is to gather at the palace of Prince Peter of Greece, where the newly-appointed ambassador, Diane Clark, and the Prince are giving a Ball for the reunion. The F.M.S. military band blares forth with a medley of old favorites. Their chaperons, Rusty Shepherd, Bette Hankal, and Pat Simpson help them tune up with “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” There is some commotion. It seems that Laney Shepard and Pattie Borrison, in spite of their Givenchy gowns, have been sent upstairs because they had no stockings on. Mary Rohmann, who is now teach- ing government at the University of Virginia, asked us if we had heard about Mary Kay Taylor, who is still enjoying her prestige as first lady U.S. astronaut. She fell in love with a moon man. Oh, now we see Jill Byrd, Jill George, Kay Bailey, and Cubby Hubbard come riding in on four Lippizans. They have just come from the Spanish Riding Academy in Vienna. They’re followed by Sara Dienst and Sallie Smith, dressed as Georgia Bulldogs and holding SAE pennants. The stir dies down as Susan Ford, now top model for the House of Dior, begins to tell us that Paris is wonder- ful for the health of her mauve poodle. Susan asks if we had heard that Lynda Gellatly, renowned opera star, had brought the house down at La Scala with “Whatever Linda Wants, Linda Gets.” We are interrupted by Jennie Place, all in black, who is passing a hat to bail Ray-Ray out of jail. He blew up a chemistry lab at the Renlox plant where Elise White and Marty Atwocd are modeling his kiss-proof lipstick. We just got the news that Sarah Woodward, Les Parkin, and Sammie Sample can’t be here because they are playing in the National Basketball tryouts. Beth Witcher, look- ing stunning in her Fairfax nightshirt, tells us about her upcoming engagement at the “Pajaro Negro” in Madrid. Ingrid Hein, in the midst of a group of intellectuals, is answering questions about her Nobel Prize for Science. She is the world’s first horse psychoanalyst. Now we see Peggy Swart and Candy Connors across the room. They are living at a rest home on the Riviera, the only old maids in our class. Gena Molette and Nancy Smith, co-editors of The New York Times, are interviewing Mel Wilson about her recent attempt at elephant-training in India. She’s going back to bull-fighting. 66 Margie Gibbons and Susan Good are out on the lawn, busily fixing the cannon to give Sherry Webb, newly elected Senator from Waynesboro, Virginia, a twenty-one salute. They misfired when they saw Pam Peck, who is still dressed as George Washington, the part she played in the U.S. bi’ centennial celebration in °76. Val Orth, sitting in a corner, is writing letters to Bev Pandapas, whose family have tied her up at home and Diane Walsh, who is working in the U.N. as a French translater, and Gail Campbell who is detained because she’s visiting a group of her Scottish relatives in the highlands. Iris Cudd and Susan Goff are passing out apples from Winchester. Susan is now costume mistress at the Old Vic. Dee Dee Raines is passing out Mountain Dew from her still in West Virginia to go with the apples. Psychiatrist Carolyn Harrell has been telling the whole assemblage about her attempts to dis- suade Pinky Maier from becoming a Greenwich Village Beatnick. She’s trying to grow the world’s longest hair. The band strikes up a gay tune, and Mary Ann McKinney who is working on her Ph.D. at the University of Hawaii, gives us a hula lesson. She is aided by Peppie Harris and Linda LuBow, who are wives in Arab Sheik Abdula-Kamal’s harem. We have danced and danced at this fine ball—and now we are going home again—but not un- til the F.M.S. band plays one final number, “Memories are Made of This.” 67 Janet Gugelmann, Judy Kemp, Miss Fritsche, Stewart Dickson, Ann Harris JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS JODY EMP: oc socal ea President ANN Harris Vice President JANET GUGELMA NIN icc site eee sek eo a Secretary STEWART DICKSON Treasurer Miss’ JOANN: PRITSCHIE: 22 2c 5 eee ee eee ee ee ee Sponsor 68 CLASS OF 1965 CoORINNE BARBOUR Martinsville, Virginia Norri£ BAXTER Atlanta, Georgia NAnNcy BIEHLE Cincinnati, Ohio PAIGE BITNER Granville, Ohio KAREN BRASFIELD Adelphi, Maryland BARBARA BREWSTER White Plains, New York CAROLYN BUFFINGTON Wheeling, West Virginia | DONNA CARTER Richmond, Virginia THE JUNIORS Kitty CAYE Cochran, Georgia ELIZABETH CHAMBERS Atlanta, Georgia SUSAN CHARLES Alloy, West Virginia NATALIE COOPER Decatur, Georgia Kay CRAIG Knoxville, Tennessee STEWART DICKSON Virginia Beach, Virginia PAM DINWIDDIE Riverside, Connecticut 70 CLASS OF 1965 FREDA DREWRY Martinsville, Virginia Betsy ELsas Northport, New York EpNA ESPASAS Bayamon, Puerto Rico Myra FICKLEN Greenville, North Carolina OLIVIA FREDERICKSON Mount Jackson, Virginia MARTHA ANN FRYE Athens, Tennessee KATHY GLATFELTER Spring Grove, Pennsylvania 7 THE JUNIORS GRETCHEN GRAVES West Columbia, South Carolina JANET GUGELMANN Slidell, Louisiana PATRICIA HAND Mansfield, Ohio ANN Harris Bronte, Texas PAULA IVERSON Keyser, West Virginia JUDY KEMP Dallas, Texas JULIET KOELLE Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania CLASS OF 1965 CHRISTIE LAMB Caracas, Venezuela HARRIET LEHMAN Charleston, West Virginia SUSAN MILLER Bridgeton, New Jersey CAROL Moore Bridgeton, New Jersey CANDY PECK Montgomery, West Virginia LEIGH PERKINS Atlanta, Georgia CASSIE POHLMAN Orlando, Florida THE JUNIORS SUSAN PRAGER New Haven, Connecticut Mitsy PRICHARD Inverness, Mississippi STARR ROACH Reidsville, North Carolina LINDA RUSSELL Miami Beach, Florida EvE SMITH Salisbury, North Carolina KATHIE SQUIBB Wheeling, West Virginia KATHRYNE TRUESDELL Newberry, South Carolina CLASS OF 1965 MARBETH TURK Baltimore, Maryland JANIS VOGEL Whiting, Indiana CAROLYN WHITE Mount Sterling, Kentucky Kay WHITE Abingdon, Virginia DIANA WILKERSON Sparks, Maryland CAROLINE WILSON Eden, New York SUZANNE WOOTTEN Smyrna, Delaware AD Miss Wade, Leslie Thurston, Lindsey Ison, Nancy Wall, Judy Blanton SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS JUDY BLANTON csc pe pte eee eee ee ee Ss a President NANCY — WAL Tre Be eee eee ee a eg Vice President LESLIE: “THURSTON seats pee ee ee a Secretary LINDSEY” [SONS Aas apt coerce eee oe ee, oy, Se Treasurer MASS MILDRED «VV AD gion Oe tate ce ee Sponsor (op) CLASS OF 1966 SUSAN ALEXANDER Lexington, Kentucky MarsHA ALLIN Groton, Connecticut Jupy BLANTON Virginia Beach, Virginia JAY BRANSON Charlotte, North Carolina FAYE BRATTEN Virginia Beach, Virginia DIANA BRISK Chester Springs, Pennsylvania MaARILYNN DAHLIN David, Kentucky ANNE Davis Charlotte, North Carolina 7 Y; THE SOPHOMORES CHARLENE DESSAUER Cincinnati, Ohio LORINDA DIVINE New Hartford, New York Patsy DUNN Florence, Alabama ELLYN FELBURN Tuxedo, North Carolina BETTINA GODWIN Rocky Mount, North Carolina Mitzi GRUBB New Tazewell, Tennessee Nancy HARGROVE Virginia Beach, Virginia CLASS OF 1966 PENNI HARMON Cuernavaca, Mexico SHERON HENDERSON Richmond, Virginia SUZANNE HURDLE Elizabeth City, North Carolina LINDSEY ISON Atlanta, Georgia ELAINE JARVIS Ocean City, Maryland LINDA JOHNSON Beachwood, New Jersey DoNNA LANTZ Anchorage, Kentucky THE SOPHOMORES ELAINE LARKINS Cloudland, Georgia MARIANNE LEwISs New York, New York ELIZABETH LIGON Brookeville, Maryland SUSAN LOWERY Brunswick, Maine SUSAN Mayo Portsmouth, Virginia BARBARA MCCUTCHIN Dallas, Texas MARTHA NUNNALLY Atlanta, Georgia CLASS OF 1966 SHARON OCHSMAN Washington, D. Picnic at Coyner Springs food for all. Fishburne entertains at the an- nual tea dance. New girls strike up lasting friendships. Athletic Association entertains with pajama party in the gym. Food! And more food! Even the faculty members enjoy every bite. FALL HORSE SHOW 1963 On a cold windy day in November the Fairfax Hall Riding Club held its annual fall show. The judge was Mr. Jack Carpen- ter of Greenwood, Virginia, and ringmaster was Mr. Aubrey B. Layton of Fairfax Hall. Miss Nancy M. Fowler took part in her last horse show as riding instructor at Fairfax Hall. She was succeeded by Mrs. David H. Parker of Stuarts Draft. The officers of the Boots and Saddle Club discuss the plans for the show. Diana Brisk, Secretary-Treasurer, won the Boots and Saddle Club Perpetual Trophy. WASHINGTON The Washington Trip ...a must for every Fairfax girl. Let’s knock and ask for the president. Early to bed, early to rise they're off! S’pose it’s really dangerous? It was George W.’s birthday. What could be more appropriate than a song? Come on; let’s get a seat by the window. Thousands and thousands of steps. Standing on the corner. Our nation’s Capitol.
