I am flattered that you wish to do so. Best wishes for a successful publication, ls Si 6 19 ‘ Charles M. Schul Kindest regards. cms tp Lenten OEE OOI XAW AO LSANONOD € Parent xB HF We dedicate the CHAIN AND ANCHORS, 1963, to one with a blithe spirit, in keeping with our theme, with youth and vitality and a dynamic personality. We are most happy to dedicate this year- book to Mrs. Laura Frances Burnett. _ Foreword The Cuatn anp AncHors, 1963, presents to you a new and different theme. This refreshing novelty is one that contrasts with the sophisticated and serious themes of past years — a yearbook brimming with youth and happiness. It is a delightful. simple theme, but one who reads between the lines can see it as symbolic of the aspects of life at Fairfax. And now, we must proceed to unveil our theme, for due to its extreme animation and vivacity, it cannot be contained between the CHarIn AND ANCHORS covers any longer. In one more moment, the whole “Peanuts” crowd will burst forth upon you — Charlie Brown and Lucy, Linus, Pigpen, and Sally, Schroeder, Violet, and last but not least, Snoopy. All that is lacking now is YOU to enjoy them. The Peanuts cartoons are copyrighted by United Feature Syndicate Inc. Copyright 1950, 1951, 1952. REWang $9985.59 ua Bede “You're going to make Dean’s List.” _ ; Jane Young Mr. Jim Young 85 SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY The time is June 8, 1973, and the place is Fairbanks, Alaska. When the Senior Class of 63 reached Fairbanks they met at Mother Mosie’s Muklak Cafe where Rite (the Bomb) Under- wood was appearing nightly. When we arrived, Hostess Marlene Halperin showed us to a table where Janet Horne, Ph.D., was waiting for us. Janet came up from Fairfax where she has the job of assistant professor of Government under the supervision of Dean Gates. She told us that Linda Meyers, who has the distinction of being the only eleven-year senior in the history of Fairfax Hall, finally graduated this year. Alice Fricke, Sue Manimon and Val Birney flew in from Hollywood where they had just finished making their 75th record, “White Circles on My Bedpost.”” Hydie Shull and Barbara Allen came riding up on two horses from their horse ranch in Kentucky where Jan Wall, their riding instructress, had remained to take care of the ranch. Jeanne Burbank and Jeannie Wager arrived by dog sled, the dogs being a team of matched topaz poodles bred by the two girls them- selves. They brought with them telegrams from Chris Hartman and Hervey Cunningham, who are unable to come. Chris can’t come because she is too busy taking care of her large family of 10 children, and Hervey is serving a jail sentence for nearly setting off World War III by directing a nuclear warhead at New York City during a summer job at Redstone Missile Base. We also received a rather weird-sounding message from Barbara Kohn and Tammy Jenkins, who have just made the first successful landing on Mars. We had our information on the Mars landing first-hand since Barbara Monroe and Pam Erickson were the two who strapped Barbara and Tammy in their chairs. Bette Polan, the world famous swimmer, stopped by to tell us about her experiences when she swam under the Arctic ice. Liz Broaddus, who has become a mermaid, led the way for Bette. 86 Romaine Kelley, the world renowned traveler, and her companion, Becky Quessenberry, flew in from “Basic”, the famous suburb of the big city of Waynesboro. Pat Meadors arrived with her trash can under her arm, for fear that if she left it at home it might become “accidentally” filled again. Libbi Little flew in from Italy where she had recently seen Barbara Luck starring in the Italian version of “Gypsy.” About that time Beverly Loving entered, trying to sell tranquilizers to Ann Ramsay, who is the world’s famous Southern Belle. Then Louise Hughston, the illustrious opera singer, came in singing to Susie Williams, who had just bought herself a new wig. Bonnie Miller, followed by Jane Young, now a missionary in Africa, arrived. They were discussing whether or not Sandi Norton really had become a int Dottie Hooker, who is now working for Revlon, arriv ed with the latest color of hair — white and blue polka dots. Then the millionaires, Ellen Foster, who has just bought the M M factory arrived. Jane McHendry and Ann Harlan, the inseparable two, had keen visiting Jane Young in Africa and could not make it because they had a dinner date with two cannibals. Sue Turner just returned from her graduation present — a trip to Florida for as long as she wanted to stay. While she was there she saw Judy Lathrop, who is housemother to Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at Stetson University. She made the trip up with Natalie Hethcox, who has now made a new fertilizer out of rotten sausages. Susan Chickering, who now has her hair in a Pixie, and Dinorah Lundt, both pressed for money, entered wearing their old cheerleader outfits. We are sorry to say that Susan Durst could not make it because she is in the hospital from injuries inflicted after taking a course in Bullfighting at the University of Madrid. Last but not least arrived Susie Matthiesen. We were able to tell it was Susie even before we saw her because of the “slap, slap” of her extremely flat feet. After everyone had arrived, we ate, drank, and were merry, for the next day was Sunday. 87 JAN WALL HERVEY CUNNINGHAM Class Beauty Most Intellectual NUMBER 1 EUSSBUDGET Curis HARTMAN ALICE FRICKE Most Athletic Best Sense of Humor ANN RAMSAY JANET HORNE _ Best Personality Most Versatile ertatives NATALIE HETHCOX Nancy MOSsENSON Most Friendly Most Likely to Succeed HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1963 Happy, but a little bewildered, the founders of the Class of °63 first congregated full force on a Sep- tember day in 1959. The Virginia girls were the first to arrive. Liz Broaddus began setting up shop for fixing hairdos right away and Beverly Loving offered her services and a collection of rollers more complete than any at Newberry’s. Barbara Luck soon bumped into Susan Durst who came from Pennsylvania. Susan was trying to locate the rec room and Barbara, the snack bar. Ellen Foster, whose home was in New York, was used to cold weather but quite unprepared for the winter wind whistling through her end room. She decided that she and Tammy Jenkins, who hailed from Oklahoma, would have to invest in blankets and window putty. Jane McHendry from Ohio roomed at the other end of the hall and wondered whether bubble gum wouldn't work just as well as putty. South and Central America each sent a representative; Val Birney arrived from Caracas, Venezuela, and Romaine Kelley traveled from Costa Rica to join the ranks. Hydie Shull managed to climb down out of the West Virginia hills complete with hockey stick, riding boots, basketball, and tennis racket. Barbara Allen mistook the stables for the freshman dorm; this was soon straightened out, however, but Barbara decided that she liked the stables better anyway. The Florida crew, Natalie Hethcox, Sandi Norton, and Susie Matthiesen were a little late in arriving; no doubt they had Piedmont connections to make somewhere along the line. Ann Ramsay, who was one of the 1960 newcomers, brought with her her Southern charm from Baton Rouge, and Libbi Little came from Bethesda, Maryland, bringing her cousin Lee for Ann to meet. Another Marylander, Chris Hartman, alias “Crazy Legs,” roomed with Jeannie Wager, Alias “Weaner.” The two became an inseparable pair on the basketball court. Then Dotty Hooker rolled in to join the Virginia clan with her ability to dye hair. Pat Meadors arrived a few days before her luggage which was shipped by camel caravan. Next to crash the class was Hervey Cunningham, with a suitcase full of I. Q. and a bottle of peroxide. Next came Linda Meyers, hailing from Greenville, South Carolina, to join the ranks on the Dean’s List. Barbara Kohn from Pennsylvania brought with her decks of cards so she could join Linda at the bridge table. Judy Lathrop came from Florida, equipped with a good tan, a two-piece bathing suit, and a boy named Bill. Jan Wall, coming all the way from the North Carolina mountains, dragged herself into school and was very happy to meet Janet Horne from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, who lived across the hall. Jan and Janet became good friends and, later on, roommates, 90 First semester flew by quickly and it was time for two more new members to join us. Nancy Mosenson, better known as “Mosie,” arrived from Pittsburgh on a Sunday afternoon just in time for everyone in the dinner line to observe her. Alice Fricke, hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, appeared soon to join Mosie. The school year ended; the summer came and went; and in September some more members of the Class of °63 entered these gates. Sue Manimon from Massachusetts had the special task of teaching all o f us how to say, “Park the car in Harvard yard” correctly. Bette Polan joined the West Virginia group and Sue Turner came to help Janet, Mosey, and Barbara sing ‘Pennsylvania.’ About that time Bonnie Miller came galloping in on her favorite horse all the way from Montana, just to settle all the disputes between the Southerners and the Northerners. Marlene Halperin and Rite Underwood, two more Floridians, arrived with their two boxes of Kleenex, just in case they caught one of those “northern colds.” Louise Hughston rode up from Georgia on “Rocky” with her rebel flag waving, and singing “Dixie.” Becky Quessenberry from Arkansas and Ann Harlan from Texas met along the way and joined Bonnie to represent the West. Jane Young came from Martinsville to join Dottie and Jeanne Burbank arrived late from Baton Rouge to join Annie. Susie Williams walked in from Covington, Virginia, and immediately she and Pam Erickson from Kentucky became inseparable. Barbara Monroe enrolled from North Carolina and Susan Chickering from South Carolina, with her long hair, acquired the nickname of “Zelda Swampwitch.” Last but not least, Dinorah Lundt, swam in from Puerto Rico and fell exhausted at the front gate. Our class was now complete and we immediately settled down to work and play. Our junior year quickly rolled by and, before we knew it, the Junior Dance was upon us. This event was the first of many that would prove that the class of °63 could work together. June came and we all went home to have a wonderful summer before starting our Senior year. In September the class assembled once more in these “Halls of Ivy.” Mrs. Burnett and Miss Bruce, our two sponsors, were waiting to greet us and to help us make our plans for the year. That long-awaited event, Ring Figure, came and went so quickly that now all we have left are our rings and our wonderful memories of a wonderful weekend. We were given our Friday night privileges which made us realize that the year was soon going to end. Semesters, spring vacation, May Day, and picnics went faster than ever before, and now as graduation draws near we realize that we stand here together as a class for the last time. The class of 63 has tried to leave a good record and make Fairfax proud of us but we will not leave our many cherished memories, for they will follow each of us to the ends of the earth and to the ends of our lives. 91 —— Organizations Seated: Nancy Mosenson, Janet Horne, Susan Chickering, Val Birney Standing: Miss Bruce, Liz Broaddus, Chris Hartman, Ann Harlan, Hervey Cunningham, Marty Atwood, Barbara Luck, Paula Iverson, Judy Blanton, Miss Willis FAIRFAX HALL STUDENT ASSOCIATION OFFICERS NANCY , MOSENSON :.cz 4210s ode senna socucbcee ed eeseie ec Lee ee a President JANET, HORNE i 22 once ey Vice President SUSAN’, CHICKERING 2 vio. ccectiesel. Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Little and Caroline Wilson join in the fun. Later Dean Gates, shown here with the Woottens and their daughter, Suzanne, helps us plan a fruitful (we hope) academic year. Last but not least come our leisure activities, enjoyed in the Rec by several Fairfax seniors and one visiting male. FALL HORSE SHOW, 1963 Snow and rain postponed the Fall Horse Show from Saturday to Sunday, but it did not dampen the riders’ spirits. Miss Ann Anderson Hickock, one time riding instructor at Fairfax, was the judge. New types of classes were introduced, such as “Owners Up Class,” ““Gambler’s Choice,” and “Handy Hunters Class.” Barbara Allen won the Boots and Saddle Club Class.
