Remember the joys we’ve shared here. Remember as time goes by. Remember when you are old, dear, Fairfax is with you until you die. Remember the friends we’ve made here Through all eternity. For if you remember Fairfax • • She’ll always remember you. NINETEEN SIXTY TWO FAIRFAX HALL WAYNESBORO, VIRGINIA MARY SUE YOUNGER editor STEPHANIE SEARS business manager FOREWORD ■ “Remember” that is the theme of the 1962 Chain and Anchors. As the members of the Senior Class of 1962 pass through the gates of Fairfax Hall for the last time, we will leave behind a part of our lives. Never again will the forty six girls who were so close during their senior year be together. It is a sad time, and yet a happy time, for the days each girl has spent at Fairfax have prepared her for a fuller and even more enjoyable life. The days ahead will be busy ones, but there will always be time to look back and recall the happy days at Fairfax. We hope that the 1962 Ch.ain and Anchors will bring us together again from time to time and help us to “Remember”. So, in September of 1958, a small band of girls bravely entered the gates of Fairfax to become the founders of the class which would be graduated on June 9, 1962. They were a small but mighty band of freshmen. Jeep Willis and Joan Livers, having only a short dis- tance to travel from Culpeper and Charlottesville, were the first to arrive and prepare the freshman dorm for Kathy Dye, who had been a long time on the road from Venezuela. Soon the barefooted West Virginia girls, Buckland, Karen Martin, and Christie, who wanted to specialize in snack bar management, appeared and were horrified when Miss Bruce told them that they had to wear heels to Saturday night dinner. Equally alarmed were Beth Johnson, who was used to the soft beaches of Nassau and Flea, who had lived on the sand dunes of Arabia. Despite minor difficulties in the dorm, such as stuffed bells, overturned trash cans, and nightly vigils with Miss Bruce, this small but mighty band struggled through their freshman year. In the fall of 1959 these seven were joined by ne ' forces. Wanting to be part of the glorious class of ' 62 two more Vk ' est Virginians, Marion Bacon and Tut, left the hills. Tut did have shoes and called much attention to them because they were Weejuns. From Wilmington, Delaware, came Christian and Spackman, who discovered that they lived only a few blocks from each other. (Now they were only a few feet apart.) Virginia added two more representatives, M. Sue, who arrived on horseback from Roanoke, and Alice Tolley who proclaimed that Chubby Checker was saying “Willis in Warwick, instead of “Wailin ' in Wildwood.” The foreign delegation flew in to give moral support to Kathy Dye. Tracy tzlked over old times in Venezuela with her while Sara Jane and Maria filled in on Panama and Honduras. Maria was just learning English and nobody could understand why she disliked bananas. Our first delegates from New England, Susie and Emily, arrived that fall, too. They were not so en- thusiastic about the class of ' 62 as they were about the boys, Pete and Dave. Fairfax was really dominated by Yankee accents that year with Liz and Sargent from New Jersey, Karlene and Nancy from New York. Even Jessie, with her soft Georgia accent, was beginning to sound like she hailed from Brooklyn. This didn ' t bother Kathy Williams, though: she couldn ' t stop talking long enough to listen to anybody ' s accent. As Lynda Nichols came in from North Carolina to hear stories of Arabia from Flea, the reinforced class of 62 again got underway. The 1959 newcomers must have been a steadying influence on the older members because no major riots occurred during the ' winter of 1959-60; that is, none that can be mentioned here. With the coming of the juniors in September, 1960, things got back to normal — that is, normal for the class, not for the ad- ministration. The girl who was farthest from home was Barbie Nagle who flew in from Bombay, India, com- plete with sarong, and took away from Buckland the title of “shortest member . The Tampa group had received the word and came in full force. Stephanie and Allen, who always got her mail addressed to Mr. Allen Simpson, were the first to come. Stephanie ' s laugh and never-ending conversation were unmistakable. Soon Baird and Honey Baby, who astounded everybody by her height, and surprised even more people by her name, could stay away no longer and joined the Tampa crew at second semester. Virginia was again well represented. Diane Turner came to help Alice on her “Willis in Warwick stand, and Christy Holladay came across the mountain to help Joan Livers represent Charlottesville. Susan Flanagan appeared from Dublin, where her father, thz mayor, had taught her how to shoot baskets. From Easton, Maryland, came Myrtis and Lili Kay with their Metrecal - Myrtis to lose and Lili Kay to gain weight. Suddenly, who should drive up in her jeep but Linda Curtis. She had a long trip from Waynes- boro and was astounded when she couldn ' t take Carole Lober, who had just arrived from Florida, for a drive into town to see Mac. Sue Kenney came in late from Connecticut and was dismayed when she and Jeep couldn ' t go over to U. Va. that afternoon. Roe Ellen was only too glad mt to accompany them for her trip from the hills of Tennessee had tired her out quite a bit. She had had to walk until sbe reached the Virginia border. The trip hadn ' t bothered Bobbie Craig much, though; she just hoped she wouldn ' t have to walk when her family moved to New Mexico. Bettie “I-am-not-a-hillb lly Carter came d- ' wn from Charleston, to add one more member to the West Virginia delegation. On the train she met Cylinda, who was feeling lonesome since she was the only representative from Michigan. Carter, feeling sorry for her, decided to help her to change Cathy Holland ' s Alabama accent to a northern one. The final result was that both Betty and Finny devel- oped southern drawls. There was some anxiety over the arrival of Donna and Sonja. They finally got here but so late that they had to live in the freshman dorm since all the junior rooms were filled. It seems that the time slipped up on Donna whi ' e she was delivering messages to Fishburne, and that Sonja had so many hair-do ' s to fix that she just couldn ' t get away in time to make her train. At last the whole c ' ass was assembled and what a class it was! The junior year, includ ng trips to the dairy bar and various other events, was climaxed wi;h the junior banquet, the junior-renior picnic, and commencement. Returning in September the forty-six girls began enthusiastically on their job of having fun, frustrating the faculty, and just being the class of 1962. Someho v they survived all misfortunes, such as the revoking of privileges caused by a fire drill that wasn ' t really a fire drill; rain or snow on Friday nights necessitating wearing boots to town, thus making one look unattractive to one ' s boy friend; and the use of emerald in- stead of pastel green crepe paper for Ring Figure. As far as a’l of us are concerned, 1961-62 has been the best year of all. The wonderful thing about our history is that it will not end on June 9, 1962. Even though this will be the last time we will all be to- gether as we are now, we will all live together forever in our hearts and memories. The class of ' 62 has accomplished its goal, for these memories are perhaps an even more accurate account than could ever be kept in files and records, for they will end only with our own lives. 74 SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY The date is June 9, 1972, and the place is the famous Peppermint Lounge in New York City, where, as you all know, members of high society, members of pseudo ' society, and members of the Senior Class of 62 gather to indulge in that hip-gyrating craze known as “the twist.” Almost all of the class members are present, but Susan Flanagan and Sue Kenney are unable to leave the Olympic Events being held in Rome on this same date. From the press reviews we learn that Kay Fleharty and Mary Tutwiler have also gone to the Olympics with high hopes of winning the discus event. The rest of the class has come, however, and one of the first to arrive was Princess Kathy Williams who is now reigning over Israel with the hopes of personally executing Adolph Eichmann. Roe Ellen Coleman was the next to appear, with her two famous cohorts, Sonja Parrish and Tracy Steiner. The three nuclear scientists have been to Russia for some months now trying to gain the secret of the properties and behavior of the yo-yo. Success has been hinted at but the team refused to tell us of any new developments. After more of the class arrived we took the largest table in the place and began to catch up on all the news. The famous gossip columnist, Alice Tolley, to’d us that she had just printed news of Actress Nancy Gamard’s wedding to one of filmdoms brightest magicians. The only problem seems to be that Nancy hasn t been seen for weeks. Emily Fish, the winner of the National Lonely Hearts Clubs contest, was on hand to gi-ve us some information on one of her latest romances. A certain young socialite, Diane Turner, divorced for the third time, is longing for some male compan ' onship. Miss Turner’s lawyer, the famous Jenny Christie, will run for Senator from West Virginia. Miss Christie’s campaign slogan is “Don’t ask yourself what I can do for you, but what can you do for me?” The election seems to be in the bag with campaign manager Marion Bacon claiming that Miss Christie may never have been on a PT boat but that she has been in deep water plenty of times. About this time some of the latecomers drifted into the Lounge and among them were Lili Kay Baynard who has just won the highest award in the country for physical fitness, and Beth Johnson who is now a house- mother at the Staunton Home for the Aged. No one has heard from the famous author, Janet Christian, who was last seen singing the Marine Hymn as she was carried to Walden Pond. Another elusive member of the class, Bettie Carter, arrived and told us of her latest book. Hou to Ta e Trig and Enjoy It. The book is being published by the Hill Pub- lishing Company of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, where the president of the company, Susie Hill, has just issued this statement concerning Miss Carter’s book, “It’s really whoop-ee-doo.” Baird Brown and H. B. Landrum popped in a few minutes later with their ukes in hand. We just found out that both of them are involved in quite a lot of social work and spend most of their time serenading the inmates of the Florida State Hospital. One of their prime reasons for this type of work is to set an example for their old friend, Allen Simpson, who used to be a bubble dancer in one of the Tampa night clubs. The girls told us that since they had just returned from the Southland they were pleased to inform us that Joan Livers is now running V.P.I. and Cathy Holland is the quartermaster for all ships in the Norfolk Navy Yard. As the evening wore on, two more members of our beloved class arrived — Carole Lober, who is now selling suntan lotion in northern Oregon, and Liz Ne ' son, who is the president of Princeton University. The girls had lots to tell us but by far the most interesting thing was that Karen Martin and Barbie Nagle are run- ning a transport system from Baghdad to Burma. Karen feeds the elephants and Barbie helps them to re- member the right roads. lust before we had the last course of our meal and had danced a few more times the famous rancher, Carol Sargent, and her new foreman, Donna Delaney, arrived. Kathy Dye, the renowned physical education teacher, was in New York delivering a lecture on her remarkable ability to chew gum in all places at all t’mes. Members of her physical fitness staff include S ' laron Buckland, reported to have the largest biceps of any living woman, and Christy Holladay, her expert on skinny people. The model for their tour was Stephanie Sears, who is still wearing corrective shoes, or bombers. Jeep Willis, the famous comedienne, told us later that she was launching a new act and planning to have Mary Sue Younger, the bareback rider, get on a horse and run over her on the stage. Dr. Lynda Nichols was called in after the first rehearsal and merely asked, “Who cares?” Others in the act include the artistic Linda Curtis, who is now painting ceiling portraits with her ass ' stant, Marie Ruiz, in the mam government office building in what used to be Havana. The notorious politician, Cylinda Finlayson, has been down in the South American countries trying to get re nstated in her old job as prime minister in Argentina. The leader of the leftist movement in that country, Sara Jane Carter, is still demonstrating her beautiful and artistic dancing abilities. Just as the party was ending, Bobbie Craig, who is currently competing for the National Trop ical Fish Eating Award, and Karlene Pfister, who recently won the Nobel Prize for her book. Being a Dean for Fun and Profit, came dashing in. Before we adjorned we felt that it was in order to have a moment of silence for Ginny Spackman and Jessie MacDougald, old friends of ours who perished when trying to escape from the Robot they created in Professor McMahan’s laboratory at M.I.T. We were all tired and ready to go to bed and the time was late (it must have been 10:30) so we ad- journed for the evening and hoped that in our sightseeing trip tomorrow we would see if everyone really does do the twist, or if we were just raised to believe differently. 75 THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OE THE SENIOR CLASS The Last Whll and Testament of the Senior Class of 1962 of Fai rfax Hall of the City of Waynesboro, County of Augusta, State of Virginia, made and published this eighth day of June, in the year of our Lord, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Sixty-Two.
