J N 6 WN I 3 S ifN ' Education is the essence of a democratic society. The strength of a democratic nation is based on several qualities, the most impor- tant of which is the character and quality of its citizenry. Recognizing this fact, Americans are becoming increasingly conscious of the de- cisive role of the school in the Nation's future. In spite of appreciable educational progress in recent years, the United States is today faced with maior school problems, of which one of the most pressing is adequate school facilities. Some significant factors causing increased and imperative demands for more adequate school facilities are: UD increasing and shift- ing of populations, 125 an expanding and changing program, C31 a backlog of needs, and CAD reorganization of school districts. A typical example of such reorganization is the Fairchance-Georges Joint School System. Under this program many of the older build- ings which were designed for the traditional school are now obsolete, and need to be re- placed with modern facilities or completely remodeled. The school program is expanding and its expanded activities and services demand more space and facilities. When the school program is completed in the Fairchances Georges Joint System, thousands of dollars will be spent on remodeling and construction. JESSE FRANKS HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL The first thing a graduate of Fairchance High School says to a Georges student is, You'll like 'Mr. Franks', he's swell. The class of '59 heartily agrees with that state- ment. To us there is no principal of any school who has the warmth, hurnanness, kindness, and the humor of Mr. Franks. We will always greatly cherish our association with him. Pretty figures, figuring. We focused our atten- tion on our far distant commencement. As we rolled up our sleeves to attack the problem confronting us, optimism was high with plans for our yearbook, our gala senior dance, and other school activities. This is the year dur- ing which the finishing touches have been added to our high school education. Just as a building must be made ready for occupancy so much we be prepared to face life. Mem- ories of schooldays have been etched on the walls of our minds. Our hearts are warmed by the friendships we have made. As we look through the windows toward the future, we hope that we have built solidly and well, and that we are equipped with purpose, dig- nity, knowledge, and understanding. Zebley I I Junior Class Officers President Sharon Romesburg Vice President Donald Hill Secretary Mary Anthony Treasurer Karen Moser Historian Janet Hugh o Once again it is my privilege to greet you in behalf of the class of 1960. This, our first year as the upper-classmen, is one of some moment. lt is the first year of the Fairchance- Georges merger. The population of our class was increased by thirty-eight boys and girls from the Fairchance High School. They have added to the gaiety of our dances, have bol- stered our football and basketball teams and have turned out to be good all round friends. While on the subiect of sports, I must men- tion the fact that fifteen members of the var- sity football squad and eight members of the varsity basketball team are from our class. Good Luck boys! With Christmas vacation behind us we are now very busy getting ready for the mid-term exams, and, as usual, every Junior is looking fcrward to the gala Junior dance, but not the final exams, which like death and taxes are sure to come. The last day! Hope we can greet you all as Seniors next year. .30 Junior A Row one: L. Smith, J. Hustead, B, Grace, R. Jordan, C. Andria, J. Hugh, N. Sanner, M. Migyanko, M. Pepe, C. Baranek, J. New recruits from Fairchance joined with the Georgians and the first attack for education inside the yellow brick school building was under way. After becoming situated, making friends, and getting acquainted once again, class offi- cers were elected as leaders. The officers and sponsors of the Sophomore class proposed a dance as a recreation cam- paign. Decorated in an array of autumnal colors, the gymnasium was the site of the Sophomore Turkey Trot. Trials and troubles were forgotten as everyone had a good time with his classmates. The Sophomores helped in many ways to make the school year at Fairchance-Georges a successful one by participating in all activi- ties and another by attacking our prescribed subiects in such a manner that our teachers said well done. We resolve as Juniors to attack this Battle of Education in such a manner that will be a credit to our school and to ourselves. Row one: S. Harvey, S. Mrosko, A. Miscovich, M. Miller, M. Clark, B. Yes, many students are eligible for membership in the National Honor Society, but only twelve from the Senior class actually become mem- bers. Those who become members are initiated into the organization by a candlelight cere- mony. Youth walking down an endless aisle with o Beacon of Light in their hand and of Hope in their heart. During the ceremony difterent words of dilterent speeches seem to linger in the minds of everyone: Wisdom is the principal thing. He-who would be greatest among you -must be servant of all. l regret that l have but one life to give for my country. It is, indeed, a great honor to belong to the National Honor Society. On December 17, l958, six students from the senior class were selected for membership in the National Honor Society. The following seniors were elected: Paula Gebacllo, Barbara Hubany, Ronald Johnson, Charles Kelly, Cor- olyn Kula, and John Migyanko. The Epsilon Phi Tri-Hi-Y Club of Fairchance- Georges High includes students of the Junior and Senior classes, who believe in the purpose of Tri-Hi-Y and who desire to live up to Tri- Hi-Y standards. The club meets twice each month at the Uniontown Y.M.C.A. Present enrollment is thirty-two. This year activities included par- ticipation in World Service and the United Nations Assembly. Social functions were a Record Hop and a Mistletoe Ball. Learning to work and think together, to make adiustments to the points of view of the other members in the club, provides valuable education for each member. EPSILON PHI TRI-HI-Y jful Row one: B. Home Visitors Mapletown Point Marion South Union Cumberland North Union Mclsontown German Open Open Dunbar Jnntbad The year 1958 was not all-together un- fruitful in football. It was, at least, a good get acquainted period for both the players and the coach, as this was the first season for the Fairchance boys and Coach, Mr. Barkley, at Georges. The Georges boys had adiust- ments to make also. Perhaps a longer period for adjustments would have resulted in a bal- anced win and lost column, but not always, are the best results shown there. Some of the boys received honorable men- tion on the All Fayette County Football Team. They were: Frank Vicola, Jack Goisse, and Joe Skocik. John Migyanko was selected center on the All Fayette County Football Team for which he was presented a trophy. The qualities which won for him the coveted spot on the team are well expressed by the Sports Editor ofthe Eve- ning Standard. A deadly tackler, this husky youngster ranked as one of the district's best linebackers. He had the quick reactions which a linebacker needs to defend against passes. He was a good blocker and didn't make a bad snap from center all season. JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL Row one: J. Dillow, S. Bartoni, L. Switalsky, F. French, D. Bello, D. Lampey, G. Martoncik, D. Joseph Skocik, forward c6'aAluztlvalL Coach Jock Adams built his team around the one lone regular Joe Skocik, captain and team leader. This team had sterling quali- ties but was hampered by lack of height inex- perience, and bench depth. No, they did not win too many games, however, they did show great team work fa sports virtuel and skillful- ness in handling the ball. German and Fair- chance-Georges' fans were given a sport's treat January 30, 1959 when the Fairchance- Georges Five threw a scare into the champion German team as they battled them on even terms before going down to defeat in the last seconds of the game by a few points. Per- haps the four underclassmen will have gained the experience and confidence needed to be an outstanding team next year. Thanks, Boys. You fought a good fight.
