Later, in May, the band was honored with a visit from him. Near the close of the Pops concert, director Bruce Hammitt announced his intended resignation. The band closed the concert by playing Stars and Stripes Forever. Mr. Hammitt handed the baton over to the seniors for Spring Concert. They do all of this work for the good of the school. They are indeed our Pretty Young Things and a whole lot more. Kendra rides through the parade as part of the Homecoming Court. 49 Jon Returns From Costa Rica For 11 months, Jon Bachtold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Bachtold, lived with Jose Miguel Celvo and Cecilia de Mendez in Turriabla, Costa Rica. Jon had two brothers and one sister in Costa Rica. Jose, Jon's 16-year-old brother, was also an American Field Service exchange student in Alaska. Jon was enrolled in 13 courses in school there. His school hours varied. The longest school day was from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., while the shortest was from 7 to 11 a.m. Even with the language barriers, Jon finished near the top of his class. He says of his year-long stay: I can easily say 'I had a great time in Costa Rica.' Every weekend we went to the discoteque where we met all of the gang. On Saturdays we usually went somewhere, for example: volcanoes, artificial lakes, lost Indian camps, farms, jungle walks, and beaches. Most of the Fridays we went to the cinema or just hung out in the park. During the week I went to school, and 1 enjoyed every minute even though we had no books to study. The biggest barrier that I came up against was Spanish. The first three months of school, I slept, but I caught on to the native language eventually. The AFS experience as a whole helped me to have more of an open mind. I met many new people and made many new friends which I will never forget. I only wish that everyone I know up here could know and understand everyone down there. Stefan Brightens '84 As Our AFS Student To the students of Fairbury-Cropsey High School: I was asked to reflect on my experience, spending a year as an AFS student in Fairbury and its high school. Well, when 1 left Germany, 1 had mixed feelings about spending a year in a community with 3,500 people. Please, don't take me wrong. It was just that my town with 25,000 people was very boring sometimes. The first shock for me was the change in the size of the family. In Germany I was an only child, but here I had seven brothers and sisters. And it took me awhile to get used to that. Another thing was my first day in school. In my home school, we spend most of the time in one classroom with the same people all the time. So what happened on my first day of school was that I mixed up my hours and wanted to go to P.E. when I should have gone to Senior Math. But luckily Mr. Tetley saw me walking down the hallway and called me back in his room. By the time I walked back to my locker to get my math book, I was so nervous that I forgot my combination. And again it was Mr. Tetley who saved me by telling me to take my time. After a couple weeks, I was used to my schedule, to the school, and even to football. Most of you probably know that I went out for football, but what nobody knows is the feeling I had when I went to the first football practice. Can you imagine, the first time in my life that I saw football, I saw those big” guys running into each other, and tackling each other. If my dad hadn't already asked the coach, I would have turned around and walked away. Now I am glad I didn't, because the football season was one of the greatest experiences in my whole year. So was the marching band (probably because we don't have a band in my school in Germany.) I could go on and on telling you more things, because every day had something new for me, but I think I have taken enough of your time. There is only one thing left to say. I want to thank everybody in this town for making my AFS experience what it was, and I hope that you had a chance to learn just a little bit, of what I learned about America, about Germany. Stefan was hosted by the Roger Bachtold family of Fairbury. Stefan Maas 51 We are the Future Homemakers of America; We face the future with warm courage and high hope. The 1984 Illinois History program at FCHS brought home the blue ribbons. Several students won recognition at Regional and State competition, and the group's sponsor, Mrs. Mary Orth, was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the State Historical Society. During the one semester course, students built projects concerning Illinois history. They ranged from a replica of an REO bandstand, to minatures of frontier forts. At regional competition in Tuscola, a painting of a bald eagle by John Wheaton and a history paper about Cropsey by Mark Siefert were judged superior. In Springfield, at the May State Awards, Wheaton received a Good rating, and Seifert's paper was named Superior. Governor James Thompson presented Mrs. Orth with her award for her service in the Illinois State Historical Society's Student Historian program. She has involved students in the program for 15 years and has served as regional advisor for 11 years. Prior to the awards ceremony, the group toured Springfield and later attended a reception at the Executive Mansion. It Ain't Easy!! 'What a team!!! is the way Coach Randy Clifton sums up the 1984 season. This does seem to say it all. The 1984 football team had one of its best seasons ever with a 9-0 season record, the Sangamon Valley Conference title, and a trip to the state playoffs. Coach Clifton and his team prepared for the year with two weeks of 2-A days and set the season goal of winning the conference title and making playoffs. Some of the highlights this year were an undefeated regular season and Kurt Miller (MVP and most valuable offense) setting three school records. The undefeated season was also one of the surprises along the way. Coach Clifton said he was most pleased with the way the entire team gelled and worked as a unit. What a wonderful year it had to have been if the only disappointment was the fact that the season ended. Lower Right - Rest time Pleasin' Progress The progress made by the JV football team throughout the entire season was what pleased Coach Joe Oprondek most this year. The highlight of the year for the team described as small but tough' was finishing 7-2 against a very formidable FS conference schedule. Jayvees . . . Small But Tough 63 Hard Work Pays With a varsity record of 17-7 and a JV record of 16-0, the girls' volleyball team had an interesting season. Coach Gayle Haab said that the team prepared for the season with summer camps, daily pre-season double practices, hard work, and the development of inexperienced varsity players. Coach Haab also said some surprises were advancing to the Final Four at the Normal U-High Invitational, second place at the Seneca Invitational, and becoming Regional Champions. The Regional Championship was also one of the season's highlights because in the process, F-C defeated Pontiac, which had beaten F-C twice during the Off regular season. Other highlights were going on to defeat the Manteno team in Sectionals, who had won over F-C in Sectionals for two years, and playing Coal City for the Sectional championship. F-C lost in a controversial third match and Coal City went on to place third in the State Tournament. Co-captained by Val Metz and Traci Runyon, the team also showed great team development and strong play toward the end of the tourney series. Awards given at the IHSA end of the season were: MVP, Val Metz; Most Improved, Jennifer Beyer; and most service points, Traci Runyon and Shelley Weber. Front row. from left: J. Beyer, C. Tetley, J. McMinn, Julie Farley. Record Breaking is one way to describe the 1983-84 girls' basketball season. Traci Runyon set new records for season freethrows with 41 and career freethrows with 113. Val Metz set records in career field goals-360; career points-882; season rebounds-156; career rebounds-411; and freethrow percentage-80% Coach George Fyke said the team prepared for the season with lots or running and work on fundamentals. All that preparation led to the highlight of reaching the Regional Finals for the fifth year in a row. Another high point was the fast development of the Fresh-Soph team who finished with a 12-1 record. Captains for that team were Jennifer Beyer and Christy Tetley. Varsity co-captains were Val Metz and Traci Runyon. Awards went to Val Metz — MVP, best freethrow percentage, most rebounds and best offense; Tarci Runyon — best defense; and Christy Tetley — most improved. Coach Fyke summed up the season with these words: Lots of fun! R. Meiss, J. Beyer, C. Tetley, M. McMinn, Coach Fyke. 66 Lots of running and work prepared Coach Randy Clifton and his wrestling team for a season that ended with a 4-13 record and three wrestlers advancing to sectionals. Coach Clifton said he was most pleased with the desire shown by all the wrestlers. Along with the highlight of the season — Joe Cress, Tim Cress (2nd year) and Bob Sprout going to sectionals — was the surprise of how well the entire team wrestled all season. Awards went to Bob Sprout, MVP; Randy Miller, Most Improved; Todd Runyon, Captain; Scott Teske, Most Pins (11). How did Coach sum up the season? Long, hard work! Tangle Angle Make a wish. Row 1: D. With 61.1 average points per game and a winning percentage of .563, the F-C boys' basketball team was champion three times this year .. . and that was just for starters! Coached by Jerry Freadhoff, the season started out with victory as the team brought home first place honors from tne Melvin-Sibley Tournament in November. One month later, over Christmas vacation, F-C again placed first in a tournament, this time at Chatsworth. Less than a month later came the only dim spot in the season when Kurt Miller broke his leg in a game against Cissna Park and was lost for the rest of the season. The year continued on a roll, ending with a 16-9 record and the Sangamon Valley Conference championship. They posted a 7-1 conference standing. Along with this, Troy Hale was a unanimous all-conference team pick, and John Mark Ahlemeyer received an honorable mention. Coach summed up the season: We done good! The Way The Ball Bounces . . . J-V basketball team members are, front row, from left: Randy Thompson, Jeff Story, Back row: Coach Randy Lane, Lee Barnes, Bahler, Ed Russell, Mike Hibsch, Joe Pica, Brian Vaughan. Middle Dave Welborn, Mike Somers, Keith Scheiler, Stewart Schrof, Jeff row: Brian Klitzing, Tim Stork, Alan Ifft, Todd Menke, Darren Abel, Tony McCoy. Though the recordbooks may show a losing season for the Junior Varsity basketball team, Fairbury-Cropsey actually outscored its opponents in terms of total points. Coach Randy Lane said that the team usually lost by only a few points in most games. The only major exception to this was a game against University High. That game had a loss margin of about 40 points. The team's most satisfying victory was against Fisher. Coach Lane said F-C came from a big deficit to win by one point in the second half. The win was extra special since Fisher won the Fresh-Soph tournament held in Fairbury. Keep On Trackin' The 1964 Boys Track team includes, front row, from left: Oprondek, Scott Ruhlander, Tim Hedrick, Todd Menke, Dave Scott Friedman, Tony McCoy, Lyle Bazzell, Mark Bachtold, Noe, Ty Cottrell, Dave Welborn, Scott Teske, Ron Stork, John Mark Ahlemeyer, Paul Weber. Back row: Coach Joe Tom Nylander, Reid McDowell, Joe Cress, Trevor Marshall. Running like the wind High flying. What a jump! A team with a young, solid foundation is how Coach Joe Oprondek describes the boys' track team. This foundation included a great many sophomores. Coach Oprondek called the sophomores outstanding with good reason: six of the 12 lettermen were sophomores. Coach Oprondek said the season started out terribly because of the weather; the first month of practice had to be held indoors. The disappointment of the season was the Ford County Track Meet. This, however, was overshadowed by two impressive season highlights: Mark Bachtold and Tom Nylander were SVC champs and Bachtold took a second trip to state. Bachtold received MVP-Field, and had 69Vi points. John Mark Ahlemeyer was MVP-Track with 28% points. Other point leaders were Tom Nylander, 32 points (track and field); Ty Cottrell, 29% points (track and field); and Dave Noe, 20% points (all track). 70 Please Warm Up! A lot of training, technique, and indoor conditioning went into the preparation process for a very young team-only four returning letterwinners and one senior - and an extremely wet track season. Coach Gayle Haab said the surprise along the way was that 19 girls came out for the team and proceeded to finish the season. These were more numbers than anticipated. Highlights of the season were the two school records which were broken. Amy Moore now holds the record in the 3200m and Allison Hable's throw reigns in the discus. Coach Haab said disappointments were not qualifying an individual or relay team for state and the cold and wet spring. Besides being pleased with the individual improvements, the lowered times, and the records broken, Coach Haab had one more thing to way about the season, Please Don't Rain! 1984 track team: bottom row: T. Steffen, M. Noe, R. Scurlock, J. Cress, S. Steffen, J. Ruhlander, B. McGarry. Top row: Coach Haab, J. Beyer, C. Tetley, C. Ward, W. Roth, A. Moore, A. Hable, C. Brucker, D. Osborn, P. Wagner, P. Van Winkle. Missing: S. Colclasure 71 Competing in the SVC title match were Kai Kohlman, Stewart Schrof, Chris Elliott, Rob Duffy, Randy Stephens, Coach Jerry Freadhoff. 4 In A Row! After a slow start. Coach Jerry Freadhoff thought his golf team was coming along. Come along they did as they beat Farmer City-Mansfield by two strokes to claim F-C's fourth consecutive SVC golf title. At the conference May 5 at Highland, Stewart Schrof and Randy Stephens had good rounds, and Rob Duffy came up with an eagle on the 17th hole. Members of the team include: Chris Elliott, Rob Duffy (MVP), Kurt Miller, Randy Stephens, Kai Kohlman, Stewart Schrof, Mark Schahrer, Jeff Helmers, Brian Klitzing, Jeff Abel, Shanu Kothari, Joe Pica, Brian Hart, Ed Russell, Eric Ensign, Darren Thompson, Mike Hibsch, and Jeff Story. 72 Baseball The F-C Baseball team includes, from left: Coach Dave Jeffries, Chris Tull, Brian Vaughan, Todd Menke, Ty Cottrell, Kai Kohlman, Lyle Bazzell. Back row: Kevin Jeffries, Kurt Miller, Tony McCoy, Stewart Schrof, Lee Barnes, Lloyd Stork, and John Mark Ahlemeyer. Home run? Is he safe? - . i Strike 'em out, Kurt! With a record of 5-3 as of the Crier publication deadline, the F-C baseball team was trying once again to become the SVC baseball champs. According to Coach Dave Jeffries, at this time Leroy and FSW were the conference leaders. Leading hitters for the team were Tom Nylander, Kurt Miller, Lloyd Stork, Todd Menke, and Ty Cottrell. The pitchers' records were as follows: L. Stork, 2-0; T. Nylander, 2-1; K. Miller, 1-2; K. Jeffries, 0-0. Returning lettermen. Homecoming Week started off with Clash, Hawaiian, and Prep days. Friday was Green and Gold Day, appropriate for the clash with Ford-Central that evening. Presiding over activities were attendants: Freshmen, Sheree Moore and Paul Kilgus; Sophomores, Jackie Hoffman and Mark Bachtold; and Juniors, Julie Farley and Bill Allonge. Homecoming court consisted of Cindy Holland, Kendra Mutchler, Christy Marshall, Stephanie Schieler, Kurt Miller, Troy Hale, Rob Duffy, and John Ahlemeyer. Last, but not least, reigning as Homecoming royalty were Queen Val Metz and King Kevin Jeffries. The royalty was announced at a rowdy pep assembly featuring the football players racing tricycles, and the seniors winning the Spirit Stick. The parade included Homecoming royalty, court, attendants, and AFS student Stephan Mass. The game Friday night left the Tartars shining in glory with a 55-0 victory over the Cougars. This conquest ended the day with added excitement. 78 T-a-r-t-a-r-s . . The gang's all here ... Get ready to see some Fast-Wheels! Hey! Aren't you supposed to be pedaling? Homecoming Crier Salutes FCHS Football '83 By Rollie Foster “It's 7 o'clock, and it's time for you to go out there and prove yourselves once more. It's time for you to prove you're the best team in the Sangamon Valley Conference. We don't get all the press or attention we deserve, gentlemen, but I believe I've got the best darn IA team in the state right here in this locker room! Now get out there and play our kind of football, Tartar football! As I recall these words of encouragement echoing through locker rooms and now in my mind, I think back also on the other experiences I had my senior year playing football at FCHS. The season started with a big game at home against Gridley. In 1982 we were defeated 30-0 at Gridley. This gave us an inspiration to try just a little more for victory. After winning the game, we were relieved in that we knew they would be tough, but we could overcome the odds, which incidently were against us by 4 to 1. The next thing that comes to mind is the game at Forrest. Cold, rainy, snowy, and best of all, muddy, conditions were on tap for this game. The elements favored the Tartars again, and we were victorious. This game, along with beating Forrest in 1982, will be remembered because of the long-standing rivalry between the two schools. The Homecoming victory over Ford-Central, 55-0, gave the weekend festivities an added tone of excitement. An effortless game in which all the starters were on the bench at the end of the first quarter will always be a favorite memory. Of course beating Heyworth and the other conference teams stands out, but maybe the sweetest victory was the one over Octavia. Octavia had defeated us in 1982 in the last game of the season to win the conference. The Rockets throught they would win again in '83, but the Tartars came through. Then tragedy struck as the Tartars were forced into Division 11A to face Dwight in the playoffs. The odds were certainly against us as we were outsized by a fierce margin. Even though the team gave all it had, we could not overcome the Dwight team. The way of ending thi year seemed tragic because of the good chance the Tartars would have had in our own division. I will always remember the good record, the good team, and the good coaches whose guidance allowed all of us to have super memories of FCHS Football '83. The Marching Tartars did it again. They caught the eyes of the judges, stole the hearts of their audiences, and took home another state championship. The Tartars started their season off well at Dwight Harvest Days competition. They again did well at U of 1 placing only 2.8 points behind the Grand Champion Parade Band, Newton. The highlight of the year was when they captured their 6th consecutive Class C Championship at I.S.U. They won the following awards: Dwight Harvest Days: parade band, parade percussion, parade horn line, parade drum majors, field band, field percussion, field flags, field horn line, field drum majors, all 1st; parade flags, 2nd. U of I Band Day: parade band, field band, field percussion, and field drum majors, all 1st; parade percussion, and parade drum majors, both 2nd; parade and field flags, 3rd. I.S.U. Band Day: band, percussion, and flags, all 1st; drum majors 2nd; evening Class A finals, 4th. The band was under the direction of drum majors Cindy Holland and Joni McCulloh and under the instruction of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Hammitt. Congratulations Marching Tartars for another great band and another great season!!! 85 Crier Salutes FCHS V-Ball Val Metz, Volleyball MVP The Fairbury-Cropsey Volleyball team very proudly advanced to sectionals at Coal City this year after winning the Pontiac regional tournament. Once in Coal City, F-C proceeded to advance to the championship match to play Coal City. In order to win a match in volleyball, a team must win two out of three games. F-C won the first and Coal City won the second, leaving it all up to a hotly debated third game. In the beginning of this game, Fairbury quickly fell behind, 3-8, then made a comeback. During this comeback, Fairbury was denied a point. Fairbury had been awarded its tenth point, but the point was not put on the scoreboard. The Tartars served again, and as the ball was in play, the scoreboard buzzer sounded illegally. F-C could have had a point on this serve, but a replay was called instead. When Coal City finally received the serve, they pulled ahead, 14-12. Just before Coal City attempted a serve for their 15th point, F-C called for a substitution, which the referee acknowledged. As the Fairbury player moved to substitute in, the umpire moved to the score table and it is questioned whether or not she heard the substitution stated. The Fairbury player stood by the court line and waited for permission to enter the court. While she stood there, the umpire turned from the score table and called an illegal substitution. She then awarded Coal City their 15th point as F-C's penalty. Fairbury claimed there was no illegal sutstitution, but Coal City nevertheless advanced to the Supersectionals and beat Hoopston-East Lynn; they then placed third at the State Tournament. A complaint was filed with the 1HSA office, but the 1HSA declined to alter or argue any decisions made by the attending officials. 86 Carol concentrates Sweetheart Ball D.J. Mark Edwards of radio station WPOK. in Pontiac had couples rockin'-n-rollin' March 10 in Lincoln Cafeteria at the annual Sweetheart Ball. The dance was sponsored by the FFA and FHA chapters. Decorations were in light blue, royal blue, and white. Heaven by Bryan Adams was the evening's theme song. The highlight of the night was when Sylvie Roy was crowned Queen. Becky Baker and Cindy Sisco were court members. 87 and you thought nobody spiked punch anymore??? Well this year we did with Welch's Grape Juice!!! (got rowdy afterwards!!) Theme Just You And I The colors at Prom this year were hot pink, light pink, dark purple, and lavender. Some of the decorations included Balloon Fantasy Trees and Kissing Ring. The band was Soft Touch , and they played at After-Prom, too. Photography by David took pictures by a bridge with a blue background. After-Prom was from 12:00 to 3:00 in the morning. But most people didn't let this end their night. After after-prom, a lot of kids went out for breakfast and who knows when their prom night ended??? After all ... this should be a night to remember!! Tcss and Chris were having a very exciting time. Julie came to Prom this year in style.
