Much discussion was heard with a final vote in favor of the change. One of the problems that had to be overcome was that court members were on the football team. Overall, the change was a success. There they beat Odell easily but had one of the most exciting comebacks in school history in order to beat Gridley. The Tartars lost the first game 15-20. Game two didn’t begin much better. Scoring opportunities seemed to slip by. Hope was almost lost when LuAnn Doran took the serving line. With the crowd cheering them on, the Tartars took the spark with LuAnn’s serves to bring the score to 18-18. The Tartars lost the serve but their defense had begun to click. The Redskins were allowed only one point. The Tartars took the serve and finished the game at 21-19. The team kept the momentum going and won the third game 20-10. They advanced to sectionals and later super-sectionals. Baby Ruth, Cracker Jack, and Peppermint Patti began a grand adventure on the rocky road of High School. They thought of themselves as the Three Muskateers, but they were really just Tiny Tarts. Each of them had his own way to shake up the school. Baby Ruth started school as a sour ball and would always snap at other people. Later, she learned to give Bit-O-Honey instead of Sour Bites and used her charms to win her way into the boys’ candy hearts. They were constantly trying to give her chocolate kisses and to whisper sweet nothings in her ear. She was very carefree though and even their certs couldn’t get Baby Ruth to kiss them. Cracker Jack opened his Big Mouth around a group of Big Buddy seniors on his first day of school. Had it not been for Big Red, the Jawbreakers really would have put the crunch on him. Red was a real lifesaver. With his help. Jack became one of the Smarties. Whenever he was asked a question in class, he was always red hot with an answer. The athlete of the group was Peppermint Patti. At first she was a slowpoke on the court and a Butterfinger with the ball, but by her senior year she got it together and became known as the powerhouse of the conference. The Pom Poms held a rally for her and many cheers went up when she played. Ruth, Jack, and Patti took their story to Hollywood hoping to make a classic like Lorna Doone and to set the movie industry in orbit. When they met a Big Daddy producer, they thought that it wouldn’t be long before they reached their summit. He told them however to Teaberry shuffle back to Fairbury and to quit talking about such garbage candy.
