THE 1976 CRIER IS THE SPIRIT OF TODAY 1 In Dedication We dedicate the 1975-1976 yearbook to Doc Joda. A man who is dedicated to the wellbeing of the student body. He has helped with many sports throughout the years. Such as football, basketball, wrestling and many, many more. He's one person we see most frequently at the games, even when the kids lose faith. We owe a lot to this man. Thanks Doc! Doc tapes Lew Grace's ankle. Mark Erdman discusses big play with Doc.” 2 Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The classroom, not the trench, is the frontier of freedom. —Lyndon B. Johnson 6 7 Parlez- Vous Francais Rinnette Gatel, of Dompoup, France, arrived on August 7, 1975, to live with the Robert Curtiss family for the 75-76 school year. During her stay here, she participated in school organizations and events, visited Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, taught a French class, learned how to sew, gave talks, and went fishing in Canada. Some of the organizations Rin-ette participated in were GAA, FHA, and Student Council. She was a co-manager for the volleyball team and a member of Sweetheart Court. Rinette's favorite course was Home Economics in which she learned how to sew. She embroidered a baby quilt for her home project in Home Ec. Rinette said her most memorable experience here was meeting friends and learning from them. Having completed high school in France before coming to the U.S., she hopes to attend a university on her return and study either political science or international relations. On July 5th, Rinette left Fair-bury to travel through eastern U.S. and on the 14th she left Washington, D.C. to return home to her parents and two sisters in Dompoup. Lorch gives first aid to D. Roth. i_____ What is developing in the dark room? Mitch Wharton, whose handle is Black-beard, taught C.B. Radio during our first mini-course week. For four days at the end of first semester (Jan. 20-23) students, faculty, and members of the public participated in the 65 courses offered. A sampling of the 90 minute courses includes trapping, euchre, and horsemanship. Each student was allowed to choose 4 courses while Area Vocational and I.C.E. students only chose 2. Mini-Courses were a successful new idea and will probably become a welcome addition to the curriculum at F. C. H. S. Co-ed volleyball has everyone's attention. Cheerleaders, already sopping wet, made the most of a poor situation and laughed. Meanwhile, out on the field, players strained their eyes to cut through the sheets of rain and find the guy across from him. Neither the rain nor the Tartars let up until the game was won. Freezing cold temperatures and a losing battle sent everyone home at the Mahomet-Seymour Homecoming game. The only excitement during the game came on injuries. Four players were put out: one was knocked out, one received a concussion, and another dislocated his knee. The most important game of the whole season was against Octavia. This would have been the turning point in the conference championship if we had only beaten them, but we just couldn’t move the ball. This game was later televised on Channel 3 News. We finished third in the conference. Not bad! D. Roth: Intense listening. Tartar Mascot: M. Fazio It's still anyone's game. 28 Coaches lohnson and Drugan. The fighting Tartars are on the move. Although their schedule was already crowded with football and basketball games and pep assemblies. the girls added their cheers to those of the wrestling meet fans and began overall spirit campaigns for all sports, including girls'. During the year, the girls supplemented their spirit drive by regularly decorating the halls with posters and slogans and initiating the Spirit Train during Homecoming week. It was terribly disappointing for those seven guys to look up in the stands, hoping to find hundreds, and seeing only their parents sitting next to more parents. It got so they didn't care whether they won or lost. Winning drew no more attention than losing so why make the added effort. One guy said it reminded him of playing ball at Cropsey. At least this year's record was better than last's; WE'RE IMPROVING! And we’ve improved because, through it all, we stuck together. We were just as happy to come in close as we were to win, and just as proud of our losers as we were of our winners. One has to know the bitter taste of defeat before he can know how sweet it is to win. Coach Miller had the guys looking like identical twins this year with dark-green turtleneck sweaters. Oranges and lemons were prescribed by the team’s physician, Doc Joda, who, besides handing out oranges at the half, wrapped ankles and knees before the game. We lost to Fremd in the Danville Tournament, 50-60. In the Regional Tournament, we went up against Octavia to lose 56-68. 32 TOP ROW: M. Erdman. B. Kafet. T. Davis. B. McDonald; SECOND ROW: D. Roth. The team consisted of eleven players with only four upper classmen. They worked toward better teamwoi't, keeping complete control of themselves at all times, and good sportsmanship. Overall, th i team did not spike too much, but did use dinks and a change up of different serves to catch their opponents off guard. The players worked the ball between themselves in a bump, set,” spike pattern. To have a winning team, the girls learned they had to keep their feet moving, be alert for the serve and return, and call for the ball quickly. The knee-pads, new this year, helped in the low, fast, and short plays. Dale Helmer's editorial sparked the controversy as to whether the girls should be allowed in the sports arena at F.C.H.S. This argument grew out of the lack of gym space for both practice and games. The boys had to rearrange the time and place to practice at as to make room for the girls' teams. Friction built up with students, teachers, and coaches alike. Although the girls had a small following, they were at least given the same opportunity to compete and develop as athletes. 35 Wrestlers Advance to Sectionals Coach Drugan's first year as wrestling coach produced a winning season. The wrestlers took 3rd at the Flanagan tourney, 4th at the conference Tourney, 6th at the Districts and 15th at the Sectionals. Individual wrestlers Dave Taylor and Charlie Thames advanced to the State Sectionals. The whole team did exceptionally well even though they had to warm-up and practice in the cafeteria. New Coaching Sparks New Ideas Enthusiastic was how one ball player described baseball coach Terry Drugan. He wanted a good ball team that knew the fundamentals of baseball. Coach Drugan had them doing what no other team did. and that was jogging around the field before every game. He also used new verbal signals like don't let him die out there (suicide squeeze) and don't gel doubled up out there (double steal). Other generating ideas were the bat girls, Dede Ifft and Lori Clark. Desperately needing new uniforms, the boys were given new hats and promised new uniforms next year. Drugan also hopes to end the season before the summer months begin. Team members this year were T. Hedrick. D. Roth. B. Friedman. D. Hammond, B. Dameron. M. White. B. Maley. I. Ifft, S. Kutzner. B. Spread me some jam! I want more to eat, The Fatty that I am. Serve me those green peas! And a lamb chop! Once I start eating I never can stop. I like to eat so much That I never will get thinner. Ahh, this mini-snack was good. But I can’t wait for dinner. 108 In Step With the Spirit Having no workroom, the yearbook staff spent numerous after-school hours in the 1MC working on the bicentennial book. Like our nation, we are diversified. Wrestlers and Tartarettes, dreamers and doers. We made a unit. Even though confused, discouraged or frightened, our unit would spark; ideas bloom; and eventually the book was finished. This is it! We give you the challenge to join us and improve YOUR book.
