Learning The Robert Curtiss Family: Mr. Curtiss, Mrs. Curtiss, Cathy, Gianluca, Bill, Vicky, and Betty. Gianluca Selmi left his home in Carpi, Italy to spend the year with the Robert Curtiss family of Fairbury. Gianluca was Fairbury-Cropsey’s second AFS student for the 1973-74 school year. After arriving in Fairbury, Gianluca found life quite different from that in Italy. He was prepared to accept all the challenges that lay ahead of him. He wanted to find out if life was the one he had been living before coming to the U.S., or if it was different. Marching band. Student Council, and Math Club took up much of Gianluca’s after-school time. He was also employed by the FAIRBURY BLADE. All the different experiences Gianluca had with his new family and friends helped him to realize that the important thing is not to succeed, but to try. When asked to comment on his stay, Gianluca said, “1 think that my experiences as an AFS student have been the most important 1 have ever had because they made me realize that people are different, that people most of the time don’t have the ideas, but can give a value to their lives as soon as they give up their egotistical thoughts.” “My year has been a year rich with new experiences and continuous growth. I’m sure that this growth wouldn’t have been possible without you people and friends of Fairbury.” 11 Gianluca Selmi

This year AFS brought to Fairbury- Crop-sey High School two students, one of them a mademoiselle from France. Claude Pandolfo left her home in Laon, France to spend the year with the Herb Lehmann family of Cropscy. When Claude First arrived, she did not know what to think-life and people here were so different from what she usually experienced in France. Not one day went by without Claude learning new and different things. With the love and patience shown by her new family and friends, Claude soon came to know Fairbury-Cropsey as her home. Claude became involved with the Chorus, Student Council, Math Club and the fourth hour French class. She also enjoyed attending the various AFS week ends. Claude summed up her year in this way. “This year has been so wonderful! So full of good times, of deception; but overall full of people and feelings. I’ll be the same, and I’m glad. I learned to love, to give a little of myself, to act just for the pleasure of it. I learned why people should love each other in peace. All this with your help.” “I cannot forget Fairbury-Cropsey High School, nor AFS. And 1 tell you—you don’t need to be an AFS’er to live an exciting year! Just open your mind and make yourselves happy.” Gianluca and Claude enjoying time togehter. The Herb Lehmann Family: Gail, Claude, Mrs. Lehmann and Mr. Lehmann.

COSTA RICA—VIA AFS Erika Heppner spent the summer of 1973 in Costa Rica under the auspices of AFS—Americans Abroad. Under the Americans Abroad program, a student spends three months or one year with a family in a different country and culture. The student soon learns to adapt his way of living to his host family’s. This all involves an important learning process. Erika lived with the Jaime Carvajal family. Mr. Carvajal owned and operated a furniture factory in San Jose. Mrs. Carvajal was a housewife. Much of Erika’s time was spent in school where she made many of her new friends and improved her newly-learned Spanish. Some of Erika’s most memorable experiences included a visit to a volcano, the week in Naranjo, and just those quiet moments shared with family and friends. When asked to generally comment on her experience, Erika stated. “Through AFS I have learned much about the importance of human feelings and understanding. It is alot harder to get along with those unlike one’s self. Achieving understanding on a one-to-one basis may be an important key to achieving that long-wanted world peace. Someday I hope to return to visit the family and country that have taught me so much.” UFELEARNMG From Brazilian cities to French farms AFS American Abroad students commit themselves to life learnm j Annually 2.000 high school juniors and seme ,o families for a summer or a year m 60 countries Attending school, mdking cows or sharing quiet moments, they discover differences and simltaritw among all people.
