Life comes in all colors-all beautiful. This year AFS brought to Fairbury- Crop-sey High School two students, one of them a mademoiselle from France. Claude Pandolfo left her home in Laon, France to spend the year with the Herb Lehmann family of Cropscy. When Claude First arrived, she did not know what to think-life and people here were so different from what she usually experienced in France. Not one day went by without Claude learning new and different things. With the love and patience shown by her new family and friends, Claude soon came to know Fairbury-Cropsey as her home. Claude became involved with the Chorus, Student Council, Math Club and the fourth hour French class. She also enjoyed attending the various AFS week ends. Claude summed up her year in this way. “This year has been so wonderful! So full of good times, of deception; but overall full of people and feelings. I’ll be the same, and I’m glad. I learned to love, to give a little of myself, to act just for the pleasure of it. I learned why people should love each other in peace. All this with your help.” “I cannot forget Fairbury-Cropsey High School, nor AFS. And 1 tell you—you don’t need to be an AFS’er to live an exciting year! Just open your mind and make yourselves happy.” Gianluca and Claude enjoying time togehter. The Herb Lehmann Family: Gail, Claude, Mrs. Lehmann and Mr. Lehmann. Learning The Robert Curtiss Family: Mr. Curtiss, Mrs. Curtiss, Cathy, Gianluca, Bill, Vicky, and Betty. Gianluca Selmi left his home in Carpi, Italy to spend the year with the Robert Curtiss family of Fairbury. Gianluca was Fairbury-Cropsey’s second AFS student for the 1973-74 school year. After arriving in Fairbury, Gianluca found life quite different from that in Italy. He was prepared to accept all the challenges that lay ahead of him. He wanted to find out if life was the one he had been living before coming to the U.S., or if it was different. Marching band. Student Council, and Math Club took up much of Gianluca’s after-school time. He was also employed by the FAIRBURY BLADE. All the different experiences Gianluca had with his new family and friends helped him to realize that the important thing is not to succeed, but to try. When asked to comment on his stay, Gianluca said, “1 think that my experiences as an AFS student have been the most important 1 have ever had because they made me realize that people are different, that people most of the time don’t have the ideas, but can give a value to their lives as soon as they give up their egotistical thoughts.” “My year has been a year rich with new experiences and continuous growth. I’m sure that this growth wouldn’t have been possible without you people and friends of Fairbury.” 11 Gianluca Selmi COSTA RICA—VIA AFS Erika Heppner spent the summer of 1973 in Costa Rica under the auspices of AFS—Americans Abroad. Under the Americans Abroad program, a student spends three months or one year with a family in a different country and culture. The student soon learns to adapt his way of living to his host family’s. This all involves an important learning process. Erika lived with the Jaime Carvajal family. Mr. Carvajal owned and operated a furniture factory in San Jose. Mrs. Carvajal was a housewife. Much of Erika’s time was spent in school where she made many of her new friends and improved her newly-learned Spanish. Some of Erika’s most memorable experiences included a visit to a volcano, the week in Naranjo, and just those quiet moments shared with family and friends. When asked to generally comment on her experience, Erika stated. “Through AFS I have learned much about the importance of human feelings and understanding. It is alot harder to get along with those unlike one’s self. Achieving understanding on a one-to-one basis may be an important key to achieving that long-wanted world peace. Someday I hope to return to visit the family and country that have taught me so much.” UFELEARNMG From Brazilian cities to French farms AFS American Abroad students commit themselves to life learnm j Annually 2.000 high school juniors and seme ,o families for a summer or a year m 60 countries Attending school, mdking cows or sharing quiet moments, they discover differences and simltaritw among all people. They must seek the eldorado—“the golden.” Mr. Isaacs, Principal at Fairbury, spent his first year seeking to improve F.C.H.S. We, as students at Fairbury-Cropsey High School, did not always welcome the changes he proposed. However, now that the year is over, we can sec that he was striving to develop F.C.H.S. and its students to their fullest potential. Homecoming 1973 will be remembered by all who participated. It will probably be remembered most for our victory over Farmer City, 28-13. During the week a Spirit Contest was held. Bicycle Races, Neck Orange Race, Kite Flying Contest, and Chain Link Contest were held. The Class of ’74 won the Class Spirit Contest. They also won the beast, legs, and kite-flying contests. The parade was longer this year than in past years. There were entries from the classes, many clubs, and the Junior High. The Freshman Float won 1st Place, with the Seniors following with 2nd. and the Jr. High with 3rd. The dance theme was “Now More Than Ever”. The couples danced to the fine music of “Bittersweet”, as Homecoming Queen Cheryl Haas reigned over the festivities. Homecoming Queen, Cheryl Haas. NOW MORE THAN EVER P. Reis K. Fyke, J. Cox, B. SWEETHEART BALL 1974 was no exception for the Future Homemakers of F.C.H.S. For the fifth consecutive year the F.H.A. successfully sponsored a Sweetheart Ball. The Sweetheart Ball gives each girl an opportunity to ask her favorite sweetheart out for a memorable evening of dining, dancing, and fun. Susan Kokotek was chosen as this year’s queen from a court composed of five senior girls. Lynettc Taylor, last year’s queen, was on hand to crown the new queen. D. lfft S. Kokotek J. Huber V. Its purpose was to involve boys not out for football in a fall sport to help condition them for basketball or track. Two duel meets, three triangular meets, and the district meet made up the schedule of the eleven-man cross country team. In the district meet at Kankakee, they competed against approximately 120 other runners. Keith Zimmerman placed 38th., Tim Rath 84th, and Larry Thompson 94th. Row 1: T. Rath, L. Thompson, K. LIFE IS SHARING “When a football team has the community behind them they’ve got a lot going for them, because there’s unity in community. Unity has “U” and “I” in it and when “you” and “I” get behind the FCHS Tartar Football team good things happen.” Good things did happen this year to the FCHS Varsity Football team. Under the leadership of first-year varsity coach, John Ayres, the Tartars shared first place in the Sangamon Valley Conference. The Tartars finished the season 7-2, with a 6-2 conference record. Fairbury-Cropsey had several players picked as “All-Conference” choices. Those chosen to the “Defensive Team” were: Mark Hall, Tony Aberle, Jeff Kilgus, and Mike Kelson. On the “Offensive Team Mark Hall, Rick Rothenberger, and Jeff Kilgus were chosen. Mark Hall had the honor of being named to both the offensive and defensive teams. Jeff Kilgus and Mark Hall were named to the CHICAGO DAILY NEWS “Little All-State Team.” Hopefully, next year and in years to come, “you” and “I” will again be loyal FCHS Tartar Football fans and will be able to watch the Tartars post a record even better than 1973’s 7-2 record. 54 Row 1: B. The experience and leadership of seniors, Greg Taylor, Mike Reis, Joe Oprondek, Pat Reis, and Tony Aberle contributed to the team’s success. Tony Aberle had the honor of receiving the MVP award, having the highest batting average-415, and setting a record for the most base hits—22. Greg Taylor also set a record for the most stolen bases—18. Everything considered, the season went rather well, and Coach Jeffries can be proud of the 1974 FCHS Baseball Team. 66 P. Featured speakers at graduation included class members Bill Curtiss, student body president; Debbie Moulton, salu-tatorian: Marsha Jenkins, valedictorian; and Bob Nussbaum, class president. Besides diplomas being presented at graduation, various class members were cited for outstanding achievement. The motto chosen by the Class of 1974 was “Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced” by James Baldwin. Class colors were green and gold and the class flower was a yellow rose. The Class of 1974 has come a long way these past four years, and in future years it is hoped they will always remember their days at FCHS.
