He also must have a good relationship with the students, enforcing discipline when necessary, but not being too strict. Mr. Bruce Hammitt more than fills these requirements. He has given generously of his time and effort for the betterment of the band. Under his leadership, the band has won many awards and has added more interest to school activities. To Mr. Hammitt we dedicate the 1972-73 yearbook. A Job Well Done The Gary Elliott family: Mr. Elliott, Ruben Giraldo, Mrs. Elliott. Tim, Teri, Mark, Matt. From Mountains To Plains American Field Service International scholarships is a program which brings students every year to the United States of America. On a term of one year, the student learns what it’s like to be an American. Living with a family, the student gets to know the different styles of life, as well as the way of understanding between the people. From Medellin, placed in a green and warm valley in the Andes Range in Colombia, came our AFS student, Ruben Giraldo. His American home was with the Gary Elliott family. At F.C.H.S. Ruben participated in the Math Club, National Honor Society, and Student Council. Through the AFS weekends and with his family, Ruben had the opportunity to visit a variety of places in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Canada, where he spent a week at a boy scout camp. When Ruben was asked what he enjoyed the most during his stay in the U.S., he said, “I enjoyed very much the AFS weekends, parties, my job at the BLADE, and being a member of the Elliott’s.” 8 Ruben Giraldo The Dimitris Zervas Family of Larissa, Greece. From Cropsey To Greece? Americans Abroad, a branch of the American Field Service, is a program which sends American students to other countries for one summer or an entire year, to learn their customs, life style, and promote international understanding. For a short time, he becomes a member of another family and nation. Teri Elliott spent the summer of 1972 with the Dimitris Zervas family of Larissa, Greece. Her father owned a cinema, a small farm, and a camping area. She had two sisters-Christina, who is 16 and attends a gymnasium, and Lily, who is 22 and attends a university in Innsbruck, Austria, where she studies architecture. Teri, her two sisters, and her parents, Dimitris and Anastasia, spent most of the summer at the camping ground. During this time, Teri worked at the canteen and market on the camping grounds, and tried to learn a little Greek. She often spent evenings with her sisters and friends on the beach or dancing. She also climbed Mt. Olympus, spent one week in Athens, five days touring southern Greece, and a week in Istanbul, Turkey. Her most memorable experiences were shopping with her father, learning Greek dances, mountain climbing, seeing the Acropolis, and making friends from all over the world. Teri hopes to return to Greece in the near future to see her family and friends, and to go to Colombia, South America, to sec Ruben Giraldo. Christina, Teri’s Greek sister, will be an AFS student to the U.S. during 1973-74, and Teri hopes to visit her while she’s here. She also hopes to continue working with AFS. When asked to comment on her experience she said, “AFS is the greatest program that I know of. Being a representative to Greece and a host sister to Ruben has taught me more than words can explain. AFS has given me friendship, love, understanding, and a want to travel. I urge anyone who is interested to get involved; the rewards arc tre mendous!” Teri and Ruben 9 Anders Wallentin: From Sweden To Fairbury The Jim Newlin family: Lori, Julie, Mrs. Newlin, Jeff, Mr. Newlin, Anders Wallentin. Anders Wallentin, our foreign exchange student from Sweden, found Fairbury quite different from Gotenburg. Anders had little difficulty adjusting to his new school and his new home with the Jim Newlin family, however. While attending F.C.H.S., Anders involved himself in many activities. These activities included: Math Club, Student Council, National Honor Society, and the track team. Anders also wrote a column for THE BLADE entitled “The Viking”. In this column he gave Fairburians an idea of how things are in Sweden. Anders spent most of his time running with the track team. He was a great asset to the team, and received the outstanding track award. When Anders was asked about his year in Fairbury, he replied: “My most valuable experience was with the track team, in which I found a wonderful spirit, which was no comparison to what I have found in Sweden. I also think that Fairbury is one of the best towns an A.F.S. student can come to.” CLASSES Freshmen Make A Beginning Julie Aberle Mark Aberle June Allen Julie Arnold Keith Bahler Steve Bahler Lisa Baltz Rodney Bazzell Keith Bittner Dennis Bressner Howard Brogan Sam Broquard Charlene Brown Don Brown Tim Brucker Jay Bryant J erry Cottrell Betty Curtiss Barry Dameron Tim Davis Bill Dionne Debbie Dowling Pam Elliott Mark Erdman Linda Eymann Joan Frederick Chuck Friant 12 Brenda Friedman June Friedman Julie Furrer Nancy Fyke David Gahm Gary Gauger Diane Gerdes Donna Goad Dan Grosshans Mary Grosshans Linda Haerr Gina Hall Dale Helmers Dan Hodges Donna Hoffman Greg Hofmann Doug Honegger Linda Hulse Jeff Ifft Janice Iler Don Kaisner Alvin Knapp Chuck Lane David Lawrence Debbie Lawrence Phyllis Lawrence Patsey Long Julie Magee Lisa Maley Marion Maynard 13 Freshman Float Receives Third Arnold Munz Julie Newlin Pat McCue Janis McCulloh Michelle McKeon Frank McPherson Keith Meints Gene Miller Doug Moore Rick Moser The Freshman Class began their First year at F.C.H.S. by electing their officers: Rod Bazzell, President: Mike Wenger, Vice-President: Tim Brucker, Treasurer; and Pam Elliott, Secretary. The team’s spirit, skill, determination, and ability to play as a team were reasons for such an excellent record. Several Freshmen gained much experience by playing in Junior Varsity and Varsity games, as well as Freshman games. Coach Beyer and his players have had a season they can be proud of! J.V.'s Undergo Rough Season The JV’s, coached by Dave Jeffries, went into the season with high expections, only to end the season with a 2-3-1 record. The one game Fairbury did win was its 48-0 triumph over DeLand-Weldon. It seemed that throughout the season the defense and offense just couldn’t get it together. Fairbury did manage to come within two points of the Heyworth Hornets at their Homecoming game. Perhaps the Tartars played their best game of the season when they were beaten by only one touchdown by the Blue Devils of Farmer City-Mansfield. The losing season, however, did give the Tartars experience. Next year the Fairbury fans can once again have hope for a winning season as 30 lettermen will be returning. The underclassmen played hard during the season and two were rewarded with awards. The Mark Brucker Award went to Sophomore end, Ray Popejoy, and the John Neil Award went to Junior back, Mark Hall. The Defensive Award went to Randy Bazzell and Terry Roth. Going gradually gets tougher, but finally pays off. Rain, 8.V.C. This was not an easy job since it was not one of the best years for sports. Nevertheless they did a good job. Throughout the year the cheerleaders did more than lead cheers at games; they helped organize pep assemblies, sold candy, and put up posters in the locker room to encourage team spirit. Without the Varsity and Jr. Varsity Cheerleaders the school sports activities would be lacking in enthusiasm. B. Moscicki, D. Abbey, J. Lawless, G. Lehmann, B. Rathbun D. Dowling, P. Elliott, J. Due to an unusual situation, the team was mainly made up of underclassmen. Unfortunately, Coach Orchard ended his first year at F.C.H.S. with a disappointing 3-21 record. As always, everyone is looking to next year with high hopes. Front Row: D. Roth, G. Williams, T. Timmons, R. Ricketts, R. Cole. Row 2: Coach Orchard, S. Conrod, R. Bazzell, R. Friedman, N. The Freshmen and Sophomores combined to take the first place trophy at the Sangamon Valley Conference Championship tournament. They defeated Saybrook-Arrowsmith 60-58 in the final game to take the title. Coach Irwin of the Freshman team and Coach Beyer of the Sophomore team can be pleased by the way the season went. If these coaches and their players put forth as much effort next year as they did this year, we can look forward to another winning season. Anders Wallen tin, besides making the most points, broke the 880-yard record which was last set in 1927. Keith Zimmerman, with a time of 53.6, accomplished a school record in the 440-yard dash. Five members received letters, and 7 received second year pins. With 11 returning lettermcn, it looks like a promising season in 1974. Row 1: R. Thompson, A. Whately, G. Taylor, R. Cole, R. This year’s team was a young one. There were only two seniors on the squad—Randy Bazzell and Roger Friedman. Joe Oprondek, a junior, had the honor of finishing the season with the highest batting average—.390. Hopefully, with the return of most of this year’s team next year, F.C.H.S. can have an even better baseball season. 42 46 STUDENT LIFE Homecoming's Many Faces M. This year’s Homecoming was started off by a fantastic rally session Thursday night. All classes participated with the Sophomore Class taking first place for the week’s activities. Friday afternoon the parade was held. The Junior Class float took first place while the Sophomore Class received second and the Freshman Class third. That night Fairbury put up a good fight against the Heyworth Hornets, with the Tartars only losing by two points—14 to 12. Homecoming activities were topped off Saturday night with the Homecoming Dance. Haymarket Riot, a rock group from Chicago, provided the music. The theme for the dance was Zodiac. The drama depicted a young couple opening their home as a guest house. The problems they have almost ruin their happy marriage. The strange personalities of the boarders lend to the mystery of the play. By strange coincidence several of the people that come to the house are involved in a murder case. The play builds to a dramatic finish which reveals the murderer. Richard Foltz explains the problem. It began with the banquet in the cafeteria, which was decorated with fresh spring flowers and burning candles. Then it was off to the prom dance at the Country Club, which was decorated with a fountain, paper flowers, balloons and streamers—music provided by the “Naturals.” The after-prom party, also held at the Country Club, concluded the colorful evening with W. C. Fields movies, a putting contest, a magic act, and dancing to the music of the “Kool Aid Kids.” The Junior-Senior Prom colored the memorable evening with a sharing of love and lasting friendship. “The Matchmaker lilllillliLlllll Cast Mrs. Dolly Levi Debbie Slayton Horace Vandergelder Robert Ficklin Ambrose Kemper Carl Herzog Joe Scanlon Keith Ifft Gertrude Margaret Convis Cornelius Hackl Carl Mowery Ermengarde Sandy Gerber Malachi Stack John Gerber Barnaby Tucker Paul Meador Mrs. Molloy Patty Schroeder Minnie Fay Betty Curtiss A Horse Cabman Bill Curtiss Rudolf Tom Schahrer August Keith Ifft Miss Flora Van Huysen Janet Kinkade Her Cook Lynnette Taylor The F.C.H.S. spring play “The Matchmaker” was a fast-moving musical comedy. Administration Runs The School 64 Charles Lane—Principal This school year has seen the advent of many long-needed additions to our educational facilities. The excitement of moving into these new facilities was exceeded only by the enjoyment of using them. I am sure that the additions to our curriculum and the increased interest in vocational education has sparked an increased vitalization in our school’s spirit that we all feel and appreciate. The excellent report from our state visiting team, the improvement in academic achievement of our students, and the overall growth that was noted by many, are direct results of the outstanding efforts of both our faculty and students. We all congratulate our senior class members for their achievements and wish them continued success and happiness in their lives. Their contributions to our school will long be remembered and appreciated. It is my desire to thank everyone who labored diligently this school year to make it the success it was. The effort, cooperation, and dedication to purpose are the reasons for our successful school year, and I, your principal, wish to personally express my appreciation to each and every person in our school for this. . . . An ever-present camera and pounding typewriter capture the people, places, and events of school, and recreate another memorable FCHS year. An inventive, productive staff combines hard work with many laughs to meet a final deadline, relieved that the pressure is over but left with a sense of accomplishment to fill their now-empty free time. The 1973 CRIER, a collage of pictures and words, is created. ■ Autographs. . . Ill
