Fairbury-Cropsey High School Fairbury, Illinois 3 Each of us has heard that bit How we must mold ourselves to “fit” 1 just know I’m merely me, That’s all I am, all I can be. I belong to “us” “we” and “they”, But referred to as such in a meaningless way. 1 am a part that makes the whole, Yet who has dared to touch my soul? How many people are there who Desire to know the genuine you? I only want to be myself, Not shaped to fit on somebody’s shelf. The American Field Service Program, in an effort to promote brotherhood and understanding among countries, gives foreign students the opportunity to live in America and learn of different lifestyles and cultures. Rosita Ximena Jara Galdames, our ninth AFS student, came to Fairbury from Los Andes, Chile, where she lives with her parents. Rosita’s American home was with the George Fyke family. At FCHS Rosita participated in the school activities which included G.A.A., Math Club, Chorus, Student Council, National Honor Society, and the ADVOCATE, for which she wrote the series “Life in Chile.” Rosita, who was active on the gymnastics team and drama group in Chile, also enjoyed attending football and basketball games and school dances, and working in her spare time at The Cornbelt Publishing Company. She had the opportunity to visit Chicago and Springfield. When Rosita was asked what she enjoyed the most about her stay in the U.S. she replied, “I really enjoyed the AFS weekend, my job at the Blade, school dances, being a member of chorus, and just those good times being with my friends and family! The George Fyke family: Mr. Fyke, Mrs. Fyke, Nancy Fyke, Rosita Jara, Karen Fyke. Seniors In Dedication to and WHY In our prayers we ask why? And we never get an answer. But, if you really stop and think. She probably is happier. Mary Frances Mehrkins For those of you who knew her, let me refresh your memories. For those of you who didn’t, let me give you a slight description: A sweet girl who wouldn’t hurt anyone; a petite blonde with blue eyes and always smiling. She loved the Beatles, Dave Clark Five, and usually had a crush on more than one guy. Mary had a warm heart, an open mind, and a bubbly personality. She liked to dance, eat pizza, talk on the phone (for hours), watch TV, and play the stereo way up on HIGH. Her favorite color was yellow. She liked just about everyone, and her family ties were strong. She disliked school and getting her hair cut. Some of her hobbies were swimming, baseball, and bicycling. Although she is not physically with us anymore, she will remain in the minds of many people—forever. In Memory of... THERE IS NO DEATH In one sense, there is no death. The life of a soul on earth lasts beyond his departure. You will always feel that life touching yours, that voice speaking to you, that spirit looking out of other eyes, talking to you in the familiar things he touched, worked with, loved as familiar friends. He lives on in your life and in the lives of all others that knew him. -Angelo Patri I Mark Brucker He lives on as the young man who had his own ideas on life and let no one else’s opinions sway his. He listened to their ideas with an open mind, but then spoke up later on what he himself believed. Mark got along well with all people, and all people got along well with him. He was completely honest. He didn't like to see people hurting other people. He believed that, in God’s eyes, all people are equal—no greater, no less. And Mark saw everybody as equals—no one person getting treated better or worse than the next. Mark liked all sports, but his true love was football, and his heart was set on playing for Notre Dame. Although Mark loved life, the feel of the earth under his feet, the warm rays of sunlight on his back, the melodies of the birds in the trees—God’s creations here on this planet—he wasn’t afraid to die. Mark lived a life here that any person would be proud to say was their own. He gave everyone that knew him a most cherished and loved gift that will never break, die, or grow old and useless—he gave us himself. But I'm glad I’m through 1972 Commencement Ceremonies J. Bahler reflects upon the past four years. The graduation ceremonies for the Class of 1972 began with Baccalaureate at 8:00 on Sunday, May 28. The Reverend James E. Cook gave the moving address, entitled, Who Is Responsible?” For the first time in many years at FCHS, the graduating class chose to have student speakers at the commencement exercise, which was held on Thursday, June 1, at 8:00. Debi Crabtree spoke as representative of the class on, “If I Only Knew Then, What I Know Now.” The valedictorian and salutatorian, Sherri Ifft and Vicky Curtiss, respectively, delivered a dialogue speech called, “If You’re Not Part of the Solution, You’re Part of the Problem.” It was an exciting evening in the lives of the graduates and the community. Many of its members showed their talents by helping plan a half-time show for the last game of the season. It was very well-written and very well-performed. The band placed first in the I.S.U. Homecoming parade with their Drum Major, Carl Mowery, receiving a trophy for the best Drum Major in the Class B division. At I.S.U. Band Day, struggling through the raindrops, they finished with a second place and also finished with a second place in the Morris Corn Festival Parade. The Tartar Band, changing their pace to concert band, went to contest. It was held in Normal and they received a second place. The band has participated in various parades at home and away throughout the year and has also helped extensively in creating school enthusiasm during the football and basketball games. Tartar Homecoming Homecoming was kicked off with a big bonfire rally with the traditional cheers, speeches, and announcement of the queen. The classes of ’73 and '75 tied for first place in the spirit-boosting contest. The Homecoming Parade, whose theme was “Century Americana”, advanced in spite of rain with a record number of nine float entries. Many loyal, enthusiastic fans crowded the bleachers for the Homecoming game, only to see the Tartars defeated by the Farmer City-Mansfield Blue Devils, 21-6. But the Homecoming dance, with the theme “Autumn Cotillion”, found everyone enjoying themselves. 38 1st Place, Freshman Class 2nd Place, Senior Class 3rd Place, Sophomore Class 39 H. Doud, a calm, lovable bachelor, has created more laughter than any play of modern times. The F.C.H.S. production of “Harvey,” which Mr. Fuller effectively transformed into a musical, was given April 21, 22, 28, and 29. Each of the audiences enjoyed the humorous situations Elwood’s sister, Veta Louise, and niece, Myrtle Mae, found themselves in as they tried to find homely Myrtle a suitor. When Veta decides to commit her brother to the sanitarium, an old lawyer friend, Dr. and Mrs. Chumley, Dr. Sanderson, Nurse Kelly, and attendant Wilson all get in the act. Veta decides at the last minute, after talking with a cab driver, that she would rather have Elwood the way he is. So the play ends on a happy note, at least for Harvey and Elwood. 42 A quiet moment is shared by B. Traub and H. Wiser. Love Begins With Love P. Moore enjoys the queen’s dance. Once again the coming of Valentine’s Day welcomed the annual Sweetheart Ball, sponsored by the FHA. Each girl had her chance to ask that favorite guy to an evening of enjoyment at Lincoln Auditorium, with the Dave Holcomb Combo providing music. The Sweetheart Ball was from 8:00 to 11:00 with the coronation of Queen Pam Moore highlighting an evening of enjoyment. The court. Left to right: B. Kaeb, B. Kinkade, J. Seifert Holforty, J. More than 200 students enthusiastically worked to produce another successful show, presenting talented young people of the area. Besides providing money for the Math Club activities, the show offered entertainment in the instrumental, keyboard, vocal, and novelty divisions. Jr.-Si Prom— Le Soir de Paris The junior class provided a unique “Le Soir de Paris” for the 1972 Junior-Senior Prom held on May 13, 1972. The banquet was held in the cafetorium, which was decorated with freshly-picked flowers and murals depicting scenes of France. The prom dance and after-prom party were held at the country club, which was decorated with fountains and large bouquets of flowers. Music for both was provided by “East,” an excellent group from Austin, Texas. The special evening was concluded with the after-prom party when students could watch Charlie Chaplin movies, enter the baby-guessing contest, play pool or ping pong, and dance. Everyone seemed to have a good time, with some participating in a few rounds of crack-the-whip and square dancing. :CHS Creativity at Work Amanda Wingfield (B. Wurmle) thinks back. CAST Tom Wingfield, the son .... Gary Thompson Amanda Wingfield, the mother................. Bette Wurmle Laura Wingfield, the daughter...............MaryTraub Jim O’Connor, the gentleman caller.......Carl Mowery The Glass Menagerie 50 The Glass Menagerie is often called Tennessee Williams’ best play. It is certainly his most attractive one, on both negative and positive grounds. It is free from the violence and sensationalism that inhabit most of his other works for the stage. It is also distinguished by positive qualities of insight and sympathy which are the better part of its author’s sensibility and artistry. By Broadway reckoning it is a “small” play, limited by the very delicacy of its plot and characterizations. But this does not impair its merit as a work of art; if anything, the “smallness” of this work enlarges its artistry and sharpens its poignancy. In “The Glass Menagerie” Williams draws heavily upon the impressions of his early life. The Southern background, the distasteful job at the shoe factory, the yearning to write, the drab surroundings—all these are based on memories. After dinner Jim (C. Mowery), Tom (G. Thompson) and Amanda (B. Wurmle) join in a toast while Laura (M. Traub) meditates. As you page through, you will see many faces that have changed or even gone during the years gone by. Their accomplishments here and in their later lives will soon become the heritage upon which your children will base their lives. It is a challenging responsibility. To the Seniors go my fondest wishes for continuing success and happiness. Our desire is that your experiences here will stand you in good stead to meet the challenges you face later. Your contribution to our school will be long remembered. 52 Mr. Charles Lane—Principal Mrs. Ash Unit Librarian Mr. Beyer Business Machines Bookkeeping Business Law Teachers Are Mr. Curl U.S. History Mr. Evelsizer Mrs. Fagot American Problems Home Economics Humanities Western Society A Source Mr. Feely Boys’ P. They also elected Dawn Abbey, Neal Bazzell, Dale Maley, and June Ricketts to represent them in Student Council. The sophomores threw themselves head-first into Homecoming activities. This resulted in coming up with a third place float with the slogan “Dry 'em Up, Tartars!” Mark Hall escorted the sophomore attendent June Ricketts. Koehl Maintain School Spirit Creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm for their team and fans is the job of the cheerleaders. This year the FCHS varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders worked valiantly at each game to promote and raise school spirit. For a money-making project both squads participated in the sale of candles. Captains of the varsity squad and junior varsity squad were Barb Moscicki and Dawn Abbey, respectively. 82 K. Maley, J. Tavener, B. Rathbun, D. Abbey, J. Curl The Freshman Basketball team had a fairly good season, posting a 7-8 record. Having a tough schedule, they did really well in the First half of the season and fell down some in the last half. With all the experience they picked up this year, hopes are high for a better varsity record in the years to come. Mike Erwin coached the Freshman cagers in his second year as coach at F.C.H.S. The team showed great running ability, but was slightly lacking in field event competition. Non-Conference foes, such as Chatsworth, Dwight, and Chenoa, proved to be no competition for the gallant Tartars. The Conference Track Meet, however, proved to hold stiffer competition, with the Tartars placing 8th out of 10 teams. The Fresh-Soph Track Team came up with an impressive 2nd place in the F-S Conference Meet. Tartars Achieve 6-12 Fairbury-Cropsey’s baseball team opened their season with a 11-4 win over the Octavia Rockets. This was a really good start for F.C.H.S., since they ended their season with a 6-12 record. Five of those 12 games lost were lost by only one run! The record was good news for the Tartars considering that they were a young team this year. Underclassmen as well as upperclassmen gained that valuable experience that will be so essential for a winning team in the years to come. The Tartars lost only four good Seniors this year. They include Larry McClellan, John Reis, Dale Bunting, and Greg Myers. Larry, a pitcher, was named the most valuable player, pitching five out of the six winning games. John was cited for the highest batting average— .360. All in all the Tartars can be looking forward to a prosperous season next year since fourteen out of the teams eighteen players will be returning. 90 Conference Record 91 FOOTBALL F-C Opp. 12 Argenta- Oreana 6 0 Leroy 14 20 Deland- Weldon 6 6 Farmer City-Mansfield 27 0 Heyworth 36 7 Chatsworth 19 0 Octavia 14 14 Mahomet- Seymour 20 0 Fisher 34 TRACK F-C Opp. 86 Chenoa 31 Chatsworth 42 54% Lexington 96 Tri Valley 17% 102% Chatsworth 77 Dwight 42 Forrest 19% Paxton ♦ Lexington 75 1 3 Gridley 49 1 3 Chenoa 40 1 3 32 Gibson City 101 48% Leroy 66% Octavia 50 71 % Marseilles 82 Dwight 56% ‘Scores unavailable BASKETBALL F-C Opp. 61 Piper City 64 67 Saunemin 51 33 Central Clifton 39 41 Gibson City 82 65 Forrest 63 69 Bellflower 64 42 Lewistown 55 68 Paxton 72 54 Bellflower 64 55 Chenoa 65 46 Heyworth 73 49 Octavia 76 72 Chatsworth 87 68 Melvin- Sibley 69 51 Deland- Weldon 55 67 Fisher 76 58 Mahomet- Seymour 82 47 Leroy 59 58 Gardner 75 67 Saybrook- Arrowsmith 86 63 Farmer City- Mansfield 77 48 Forrest 67 55 Argenta- Oreana 74 59 Gridley 79 BASEBALL F-C Opp. 11 Octavia 4 1,6 Leroy 8,7 9 Heyworth 7 1 Fisher 11 2 Forrest 1 11 Deland- Weldon 1 5 Farmer City- Mansfield 6 2 Saybrook- Arrowsmith 3 10 Mahomet- Seymour 14 14 Octavia 1 5 Heyworth 8 0 Fisher 2 11 Deland- Weldon 1 2,3 Argenta- Oreana 12,16 4 Farmer City- Mansfield 5 12 Saybrook- Arrowsmith 2 2 Mahomet- Seymour 3 4 Octavia 2 92 And the Winner Is • • John Roberts Memorial Award...............................................Je Abbey United Nations Pilgrimmagc Tour...........................................Elaine Schaffer American Legion Awards General for Senior Boy.................................................Je Abbey General for Senior Girl................................................Sherri Ifft Band...................................................................Carla Fu8ate Chorus ................................................................Bev Kinkade Athletic Award for Girl...................................................Julie Bahlcr Athletic Award for Boy ...................................................Kevin Nussbaum D.A.R.
