Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1967 volume:

r M FOREWORD . . . For years adults have been addressing students with this familiar advice: So you are in high school'5 You should enjoy it while you can, because your high school days are the best years of your life. How do we react to this? A Freshman, who has seen eight years of studying with little outside activity, will usually disagree. To him SCHOOL means WORK. A Sophomore has a year of high school under his belt. He is undecided on this issue. A Junior hears his elders, and agrees that there might be some truth to that statement. He has come to associate HIGH SCHOOL with FRIENDS and ACTIVITIES, as well as STUDY. By the time a student becomes a Senior, however, he has been persuaded. Those adults knew what they were talking about! High School is a delightful combination of enjoyment and education. Although the purpose of our coming together is to learn from the STACKS OF BOOKS that always accompany us, we still enjoy more liberty than we have in the past, and the future holds higher responsibility as we pursue higher education, the service of our government or a job. The purpose of our yearbook is to place on record the people and activities associated with 1966-67, one of our BEST YEARS. We hope that the CRIER will be a source of pleasant memories in the days to come. B. H. . . . BRIDGET OUR A.F.8. AMBASSADOR On January 19, 1967, Bridget Rigsby left Fairbury for Tuakau, New Zealand to live for a year with the James Donnelly family. She attended Pukekohe High School in Pukekohe, N.Z., a neighboring community. Bridget graduated with the class of 1967 at FCHS, and she plans to enter college when she returns. Bridget was one of the most active student leaders at FCHS, and she continued to be a leader at PHS. The CRIER STAFF proudly dedicates this yearbook to Bridgie, our Co-Editor. All the Tartars were pleased to have her become our first representative in the AFS Americans Abroad Program. MC THING On November 18 and 19 the two act comedy MRS. McTHING was presented by the Junior Class. In the play Mrs . Larue and her son, Howay, are subjected to the anger of a witch named Mrs. McThing. In her anger she replaced both of them with imitations she had created. With the help of Poison Eddie Schellenbach, Dirty Joe, Stinker, and Mrs. McThing's adopted daughter--Mimi, Mrs. Larue and Howay overcome Mrs. McThing and her imitations. Mr. David Fuller did an outstanding job in designing the sets and in directing the cast members. This play proved to be very enjoyable, and members of the cast and Mr. Fuller can be proud of a job well done. Lancelot K. Mahaffey. That's pretty. That sends me! Nelson? ... Yes, Ma'am. Now it'll stay good, lady — THE SENIOR PLAY The Senior Class on April 21 and 22 presented the four act play--THE ADMIRABLE CRICHTON. The play is based on the controversy over the divisions of classes. Lord Loam, an advocate of equality, becomes marooned on a desert isle with his three daughters--Catherine, Agatha, and Mary, his butler--Crichton, a maid--Tweeny, the Hon. Ernest Wooley, and the Rev. John Tre-heme. While on the island, Crichton gradually takes over, with the rest serving him. This turnabout, though, comes to a quick end when they are rescued by a passing ship. The result in England is a confusing return to the norm, leaving Lord Loam a far less outspoken upholder of class equality. Mr. David Fuller directed the play with the assistance of Bruce Huber. Mr. Fuller also designed the four different stage sets . Life with Father! Ah-ah-oh-ow-ow-oo! THE ADMIRABLE CRICHTON CAST Mr. Crichton Hon. Root The Fairbury-Cropsey High School Concert Band had a most unique experience this year. The band commissioned Mr. Charles Carter, one of the leading composers of educational band music, to write an original composition for them to be premiered at their Spring Concert with the composer conducting. The result was a three movement suite entitled, Queen City Suite, descriptive of the Fairbury community. The two days of Mr. Carter's visit were most exciting for the band members. After the concert a reception was held to honor the distinguished composer and was attended by over 400 band members, parents, and friends. Truly this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for everyone concerned, and the climax to a most successful year for the FCHS Concert Band. BACK: Mr. Bradtke--Director, J. Goold, S. Moser, B. Goold, Mr. Bradtke—Director, S. Goold--Accompanist. The MUSIC DEPARTMENT at FCHS is a very active one. In the fall the Concert Band converts into the Marching Tartars and proudly represents our school in area parades and all home football games. As the players leave the grid, the band returns to concert form and presents its annual Pops Concert in January and a Spring Concert in April. Both events provide excellent presentations which show the capabilities of FCHS's superior rated band. From the concert band springs the dance band known as the Bluenotes. This group enjoys making various performances throughout the year at many high school and community events. The Vocal department, also under Mr. Bradtke's direction, consists of a mixed chorus, and a girls' chorus. Both of these groups present an annual Vespers Service at Christmas and a spring concert. This is a group of voluntary students who wish to sing for enjoyment. All of the students under the direction of Mr. Bradtke wish to extend thanks to him for all the effort he puts into making our Music Department one of the best. vL kL vl vl vl 0T% 0T% MAJORETTEQ Connie McClellan NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY National Honor Society is an organization with the basic principles of creating enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate desire to render service, promote worthy leadership, and encourage the development of character. These are the basic requirements for acceptance into the society. All members are either junior or senior students. Those eligible for acceptance must have a scholastic average of 4.25 for Juniors and 4.0 for Seniors on a 5.0 basis. These averages are determined after five and seven semesters for Juniors and Seniors respectively. Then eligibility is considered on the other principles. This year fifteen students were admitted in addition to the five previously active members . Of these seven were Juniors and eight were Seniors . Aside from the activities of the group, which includes the regular meetings, the Society conducted a student exchange between area schools on May 2. F.C.H.S. Society members visited other schools, such as Normal, Bloomington, U-High, Dwight. Octavia. and Eureka in exchange for a student visiting at F .C.H.S. This is done to attempt to acquaint the members with the systems of education in other schools so that other useful ideas might be learned. BACK: M. Walter, J. Mum, D. Harms, B. McDonald, B. The purpose of the school paper is to inform the student body of school activities and to provide some practical experience for those students who may be interested in journalism. This is done through the printing of the school newspaper THE SPECTATOR. Articles, assigned to club members at the staff meetings, include surveys, student and faculty opinions, - sports action, and news about faculty THIS is work? r , . , J and students. The reporters are expected to meet their deadlines and give complete and factual news coverage. After the articles are handed in, the stories are printed, and then the newspaper is put together by staff members . After the second printing, the student receives THE SPECTATOR hot off the press! 52 SPECTATOR QTUDENT COUNCIL The 1966-67 F.C.H.S. Student Council was one of the most active organizations in the school. The major project this year, Homecoming, was the best ever. During the year many other activities were planned--a sock hop, an assembly, student council elections, the birthday calendar project, and the activities of student council week. With President Bruce Huber at the helm and with Mr. Mitchell as advisor the student council strived to achieve its goal--to promote better student-faculty relationships and to give students a voice in the governing of F .C .H .S. AMERICAN FIELD QERVICE QTUDENT During the 1966-67 school year Fairbury-Cropsey High School had its fourth American Field Service Student, Hugo Fabio Rodrigues. Hugo, from Bogota, Colombia, has two sisters--Gloria and Dora. While in Fairbury Hugo lived with Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Leffingwell and their younger son, Dean. Hugo was a member of the Mathematics Club, Student Council, National Honor Society, and took part in the Senior Play. Hugo was impressed most by the difference in eating habits between Colombia and the United States. Here the foods are not nearly so highly seasoned, or as Hugo put it, There is no taste in the food. Further, he noticed the great quantities of foods that we buy ready to eat. Hugo observed an apparent higher standard of living and a preoccupation with money in the United States. He stated that in the United States everyone tries to get a job during vacation, but in Colombia the students relax. Eventually Hugo hopes to enter the National University of Colombia to study to become a civil engineer. HUGO The Rodrigues Family The Leffingwell Family ADMINISTRATION - LESTER H. have many privileges. I feel that we are most fortunate to live in Illinois and to attend FCHS. We have much here that we might not have elsewhere. Our government sees that we get an education. We are allowed to drive to school, we may dress as we choose, and we may take part in extracurricular activities. Our 'small' school allows us to have close friends and to know the teachers well; and yet it is large enough to give us an education that will rank us among the best of young people. Fairbury-Cropsey is a high school to be proud of. BRIDGET WRITES, Before, as a 'Tartar', and now, as a 'Yank', it has been my good fortune to be a part of two wonderful schools and communities ten thousand miles apart. It is truly fascinating to participate in a different way of learning and way of life. My year at Pukekohe High School is both challenging and stimulating, because of the rigorous academic standards, and because of the thrill from being in international classes with students who represent the four races of the earth. But most important, I am gaining a better perspective and love of my own country and people, as well as developing insights and everlasting links with another. AS WE look back over our high school years, many memories come to mind. We have recorded the year's events in the CRIER to perpetuate those memories. We now leave FCHS and all the wonderful people here to make our separate ways in the world. Although we look to the future with enthusiasm, we shall always remember our high school days as those that started us on our pathways through life. The CRIER Staff wishes to thank Mr. Joe Gardner of the American Yearbook Company, the Blankenberg Photographers, and Mr. Dave Kilgus for their assistance . Mrs. Grandon has put many hours into our CRIER--more hours than we have. We want to say, 'Thank you, Mrs. Grandon' to show our sincere appreciation of her help in creating our CRIER . Goodbye, and good luck!
