Gurid Comes This year for the first time, Fairbury-Cropsey High School has had the privilege of having an American Field Service exchange student. Gurid Bjornstad came to our community from Norway in August. This 5'9 blond has charmed the community with her delightful personality. The people of the community have gained an insight through Gurid to her country and have come to respect Gurid as an outstanding Family in Norway To Fair bury individual. Living with her American parents, Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Wascher and their children Judith, Barbara, and Douglas, Gurid has excelled in whatever she has attempted. She was in the Senior and Speech Club plays, the Student Council, Pep Club, and Speech Club. Gurid returned to Norway in July leaving F.C.H.S. with an admiration for her country and her way of life. HERBERT BAKER, Superintendent The world would be better and brighter if our teachers would dwell on the Duty of Happiness as well as on the Happiness of Duty, for we ought to be as cheerful as we can, if only because to be happy ourselves is a most effectual contribution to the happiness of others. Second Prize The 1962 Homecoming Parade was led down main street by the F.C.H.S. Marching Band. An array of floats and pretty girls followed. The queen candidates and attendants adorned five convertibles, with our foreign student, Gurid, in a separate car. The French Club captured first prize in the float competition. The F .F .A. and the Math Club won second and third prizes, respectively . A better day couldn't have been ordered for the parade. The sunshine and gentle breeze lifted everyone's spirit. Our Gurid! Math Club Third Prize Wow! 19 Seniors set examples for underclassmen! This satellite orbits our homecoming. A fourth quarter touchdown by Nelson Asper gave the Fair bury-Cropsey Tartars a 7-0 win over the Woodland Warriors in the Tarter's homecoming game. It was a defensive battle the first three quarters. The main reason for the low score was the bad weather. The entire game was played in a steady rain. The footing was treacherous. For this reason the longest run was a fifteen yard gain by Nelson Asper. Little does Charles or his second wife Ruth dream that the seance, staged by the medium, will summon back Charles' first wife, now passed over for seven years. But the lady from beyond, still handsome and mischievous, appears to torment Charles by reminding him of their days and nights together. Only Charles can see or hear her. A floating vase handed to her from thin air finally convinces Ruth that Charles is not losing his mind--that his first wife is indeed in the room. The first wife has a ghostly plot in mind: if she can kill Charles in an automobile accident, life in the spirit world will have more appeal for her. Mistakes occur, however, and it is Ruth who takes the fatal automobile ride and passes on only to return with the first wife to plague the utterly bewildered Charles. 26 Seniors Become November 22-25--Everyone was happy to have a four day vacation and rest for Thanksgiving. Speech Club Presents 3 —1 Act Plays The purpose of the Fairbury-Cropsey Speech Club is to create an interest in the importance of speech and drama in life; and to enable its members to work as a group for the school and the community. 37 BABY Hollywood, Here We Come' Student Council Improves Noon Hour Activities The main function of the Student Council is to provide learning experience for students. Its principle contribution to learning is the development of good citizenship which is one of the cardinal objectives of the schools. For this reason, the Student Council is no longer considered to be extracurricular or an adjunct to the curriculum, but an integral part of it. The primary purpose of having a student council must be to educate. It is provided by the fact that the council gives actual experience in the way of life of our country. The council benefits the students, the faculty, and the administration by promoting better student-faculty relations. The student council also benefits the parents and students by attempting to close the all too frequent gap between the PTA and the students. The student council may help the community in two distinct ways. It may help intangibly by developing better future citizens, and it may help tangibly through service projects in the community. More knowledge about France and its people is gained by being a member of a French Club. Qu'est-ce que c'est? What's the Matter? Parley- Vous Franfais? The purpose of the French Club is two-fold. First of all, it unites students who are studying the language. Secondly, it gives students the opportunity to be on committees or serve as officers. It offers a responsibility to its members. In some high schools, a French Club exists only for the superior students. In other schools, the French Club accepts students who have successfully completed one year of French. To Baseball Junior Play Cast Juniors Present Shaw’s Pygmalion On April 5th and 6th in the Lincoln Auditorium, this year, the junior Play was Bernard Shaw's comedy, Pygmalion. The story centered on a poor flower girl named Eliza Doolittle, played by Mary Runyon and Laura Rawson, who is taken out of the gutter and taught to be a lady in language and manner. Her teachers are Henry Higgins, alias Mike Bess and John Mies, who frightens, and bullies her, and Colonel Pickering, Terry Zimmerman, who always treats her like a lady. Other characters were Freddy Eynsford Hill, portrayed by Bob Anderson; his mother, Mary Jean Schuler; and his sister, Betty Smith. Mrs. Pierce played by Debby Johnston was Mr. Higgins' housekeeper and helped Eliza dress and act more like a lady. Sally Barnes, as Mrs. Higgins, Henry's mother and ideal woman, offered advice on Eliza’s behavior. Alfred Doolittle was played by Charles Leffingwell, and Lynn Dameronwas Eliza's father, who gave her to Henry for five pounds. Rehearsals went along beautifully, but the Juniors backed out at the last minute! However, the stage setting created by Mr. Malone, Mr. Fuller, and Mr. Kuntzelman was the finest reproduction the community could remember. Authentic Setting Was Created for the Production They overwhelmed the school with their superb performance. . . . and our group had 37% more cavities! Marching out for the last time. Well, we finally made it! We've finished the Crier, we hope, to your satisfaction and enjoyment. We've been sitting here thinking back over our high school days. It seems strange that only a few years ago we were freshmen running to and fro in the halls trying to stay out of Big Senior's way. We had hears so much about high school, and finally there we were right in the middle of it. There were organizations to join and studies to do. Most important of all, we were on our way to becoming young adults. It was up to us to decide the type of people we wanted to be and to do something about attaining our goals. As we are on the threshold of life with the whole world before us, we see the things we have done and the things we should have done. We'll always remember the dances, football and basketball games, club meetings, our teachers, and our friends that we leave behind at F ,C .H .S. We hope this yearbook will help you in the years to come to remember some of the precious moments of 1962-1963. We wish to thank each member of the staff who worked so diligently on the Crier. We also wish to extend our thanks to the American Yearbook Company for publication, Joe Gardner for his assistance, and Blankenberg Photographers, the Fairbury Blade, and Watt Nakamara for photography. Our special thanks goes to Mrs. Joseph Mildred for her help as advisor. In closing, we wish to thank you for being the kind of people you are. Thank you for making our community the kind of place it is to live. No matter where we go or to what corner of the world we travel, we’ll always remember F.C.H.S. Your Co-editors, 88
