THE CRIER FAIRBURY-CROPSEY HIGH SCHOOL 1960 Fairbury, Illinois - 1 - October 23, 1959 The Honorable President Dwight D. Eisenhower White House Washington, D. C. Dear Kir. President: Recently we, the students of Fairbury-Cropsey High School, at Fairbury, Illinois, had the privilege of reading the reprint of an article entitled, An Open Letter To America's Students , written by you while you were serving in the capacity of President of Columbia University. The letter aroused our interest to such an extent that we have taken upon us the task of replying to you directly and by dedicating our high school yearbook to that purpose. Our aim will be to show how a typical American School, such as ours, can and is meeting the challenge of preparing the youth of today for his role in our democratic society. Our school is the institution of secondary learning for prospective American adults drawn from typical families in a small farming community in Illinois. The students of our high school may be considered a cross-section of the students of the United States, representing a majority of the races and creeds of our country. It appears from the study of your inspiring message that the situation that this letter was intended to alleviate cannot be solved by the independent action of any one individual or any one group, be it ever so numerous. It is our desire to enlist our services into the great army of young people whose concerted efforts will be necessary to carry out the consummation which you and others of our great leaders most devoutly wish. In that manner, perhaps, we may in a measure add our small voice to the mighty shout which will be necessary to call to the attention of the rest of the world, and particularly the protagonists of opposing idealcgies that we are ready to meet any challenge with which they propose to confront us. It is presumptuous on the part of people of our age and experience to be writing a letter to you, Mr. President. But with God's help, we will grow older, thus eliminating the element of youth as a deterrent to rational, more mature approach to those problems which will confront us in the awesome era in which we are destined to live, and with the aid of our high school and college education our characters will be developed more fully and our experiences will be broadened. We submit this in the nature of a pledge to devote our efforts to the carrying out of the proposition which you so eloquently subscribed for us. We feel that our I960 yearbook will be a typical pictoral expression of the readiness of American youth to accept the challenge of the future. We realize the tremendous responsibilities of your office and hope that in some small way the knowledge that we are prepared and eager to accept our place in a democratic society will in some small way lighten your burden. Yours very respectfully, ANNUAL STAFF Nancy Roth Margaret Broauard Co-Editors - 2 - mlb TABLE OF CONTENTS President Eisenhower's Letter................................... 4 In Memoriam..................................................... ® Dedication...................................................... 7 Administration.................................................. 8 Faculty.........................................................10 Classes......................................................... 7 Activities......................................................42 Sports..........................................................57 Organizations...................................................67 Prom Highlights.................................................75 Graduation......................................................78 Senioristics 80 Tin-: wiiiTi- not si- VA SllI N'liTON November 9, 1959 Dear Students: The President has asked me to acknowledge your letter and to thank you for writing. He was deeply gratified to receive your word of commendation for his Open Letter to America's Students and to learn of the zeal with which you are pursuing your educational careers. The spirit with which you undertake the challenges of today, preparing yourselves to carry the responsibilities of the future, is most commendable. I am enclosing a photograph which the President thought you might like to have for your school. It comes with his best wishes to each of you for a highly successful year. Sincerely, Gerald D. Morgan The Deputy Assistant to the President Students Fairbury-Cropsey High School Fairbury, Illinois Enclosure - 4 - IN MEMORIAM Mrs. Martha Carty Mrs. Carty's soft eyes twinkled and her soft voice flowed; She was good; She was kind, a memory to be endeared. Georgia had beautiful hair and a sweet disposition That touched everyone far or near. Laughter lost a true companion in the person of John, Tall and athletic and warm and sincere. They will live forever and endure. For love is eternal and keeps them They touched our lives for a few fleeting minutes; They laughed with us and shouted, and cried, and prayed; We smiled and lived our lives together; They left, but in our hearts they stayed. Georgia Durham - fi near. John Thomas DEDICATION “To be a good American is the most important job that will ever confront you. But essentially it is nothing more than being a good member of your community, helping those who need your help, striving for a sympathetic understanding of those who oppose you, doing each new day's job a little better than the previous day's, placing the common good before personal profit. ’ These words were written about a decade ago by President Eisenhower in An Open Letter to America's Students. Did you have a foreshadowing of these words. Miss Sharp, as you went out into the teaching field0 When you became a member of our community, these words were not yet written, but you have fulfilled them to the letter. Not only have you become a good American citizen, but you have also dedicated your entire life to preparing us students for the role of the good citizens of tomorrow. For the past forty years, you have been a familiar figure in the classrooms of Pairbury High, patiently instilling in students the fundamentals of English and the language arts, teaching us more than that which is written in our books, and helping us achieve our highest goals. We. the Crier Staff of 1960, salute you for your service to our community and school and dedicate the 1960 Crier to you. Miss Mary Sharp. - 7 - ADMINISTRATION . . America at work is not just a few Great Men at the head of government, of corporations, or of labor unions. It is millions and millions of men and women who on farms and in factories and in stores and offices and homes are leading this country --and the world — toward better and better ways of doing and of making things. America exceeds all other lands — by far -- in the number of its leaders. Any needless concentration of power is a menace to freedom. , . . Clockwise: Stephen W. Clark, Principal; Stanley Barnes, Dr. J. R. Smith, Eugene Smallwood, W. H. Bray, Superintendent; Harold Elliott, Ernest Mies, Herbert Lehmann, Raymond Stevens. Causing complications are Angie's friends, Jane played by Karen Stevens; Margie played by Jean Gerber; and their boy friends Tony and Fitz, by John Drew and Jack Gittenger. A-FEU DIN’ OVER YONDER The feud between the Popoffs and Frys all began years ago when one of the Popoff boys said he was going out to shoot an old skunk and accidentally shot Paw Fry. After Rosie Belle Fry grabs away from her sister Emmy, the only unhitched male thereabouts, Willy Hornhonker, the feud takes on new significance for Emmy. She decides that unless she wants to be an old maid, she will have to end the feud and marry one of the Popoff boys. With the help of Mountain Maggie, Maw Fry and Pappy Popoff are given a love potion (really only sugar water), and the feud seems about to end when Rosie Belle discovers the trick. The feud is on again 1 Finally Rosie Belle herself is drugged and is almost hitched up with Zeke Popoff when she comes to and realizes what is happening. The two families persuade her to end the feud, and the play ends with the prospect of Rosie Belle and Zeke, Emmy and Willy, Maw Fry and Pappy Popoff. and Izzie Fry and Becky Mae Hornhonker all getting hitched by the Travelin' Preacher. - 50 - ARE MY FEET CLEAN?
