Since his arrival in 1953, he and his red socks have become a tradition at Fairbury High School. Perhaps he will be remembered mostly for his encouraging pep talk at the assemblies and his timely blushes. He has given his time and assistance in all class and school activities. Coach Fyke is a friend and undemanding counsellor to all. % xp'k -fp .O ‘V «V VV n t a -(X V! ° o«0 Uv ■«« , ‘J -A® jr . « ' V . v°. v v ° «, v „ . o . Mies Harold Elliott Eugene Smallwood Congratulations.' Members of the 1958 Class of Fairbury High School. It has been a pleasure to work with you. I sincerely hope that the experience and the events you have confronted in this past school year will prove valuable in the future. The school is charged with a large share of the responsibility for the establishment of the ideals and practice of such virtues as courtesy, thrift, kindliness, ambition, promptness, industry, and honesty. I believe that your past twelve years have given you these virtues plus the necessary fundamentals of education. Please understand that your learning does not stop upon graduation. Learning is a process which must continue throughout life if you are to take your place as an adult in this or any other community. If the school, any of the teachers, or I can be of any assistance or aid to you at any time, feel free to call on us. With all good wishes for success, Hewey E. The cast included the following juniors: Juanita Wells - - Mother Gary Stevens - - Father Tom Miller - - Dick Sharon Lawless - - Babs Karen Bounds - - Edith Larry Vansickle - - Wayne Carol Melvin - - Grace Carlos Goembel - - Lee Judy Thompson - - Dora Beverly Steidinger - - Miss Atwood Bill Fugate - - Fixer Frank Ahlstrom - - Magoon In this family situation. Father, who had just forbidden his contest-crazed children to enter any more contests, found that he was first place winner of a contest he had entered some time previously. Egged on by his newspaperman friend, he tried to cover up the fact that he had won a new Ford hardtop by fibbing about a debt his brother had finally paid. He really placed second in the contest, however, and won instead a Russian Wolfhound. The truth was finally discovered after all the concealment efforts of Father had failed, and the family happily forgave him and was glad to settle back to normal living. IT’S PAPA WHO PAYS ONIONS IN THE STEW The late Betty MacDonald’s Onions in the Stew was the play chosen for the senior class production of 1958. Performances were held in Lincoln Auditorium on April 17 and 18, under the direction of Miss Judith Juers. Based on fact, the play dealt with another of Betty MacDonald’s hilarious adventures, this time on a lonely island where she and her husband had taken their family to live. Lack of communication with the mainland, teen-age boy friend tribulations, the worst winter in history, and leaky plumbing combined to keep the general atmosphere in complete chaos. The Fairbury Tartars enjoyed one of the best football seasons in recent years. This team compiled a record of 14 straight wins, the longest in school history. The Tartars scored a total of 262 points to the opposition's 124. Long hours of practice and a determination to win gave our team victories over teams considered above our calibre.
