Lindo Reece and Dick Nutting raising old Glory. THE EDITOR SPEAKS . . . As the fifties fade into history, the next ten years may be the most exciting in man's adventure on earth, for we are planning to explore the mysterious universe that surrounds our planet. We are faced with the choice of giving up organized warfare or ending our existence by nuclear suicide. The question arises, do we have the intelligence and in- genuity to transform man into something bet- ter than he has ever been before? Certainly we would not be so ignorant as to tolerate an- nihilation—a thousand times no if it can be prevented. Realize if you will, that each person who reads this book will take part in this coming epoch. Will we look forward with confidence for continued peace and prosperity? Yes, statistics show that six out of seven have had enough glamour, excitement, and activity, and are ready to settle down with their famil- ies in localities where they may be satisfied. They expect the future to be bright and un- clouded. They hope that peace may be estab- lished to such an extent that they may lead an abundant life. War clouds no longer linger low in the skies, and they are anxious to return to a haven of peacfe and prosperity and live out their lives in contentment and happiness. 2dedication The majority of Americans are satisfied with conditions as they exist today. Even though they may complain about high taxes and living conditions, they would not exchange places with anyone. They want enough finan- cial backing to insure comfortable living, and enough surplus for travel and education. Neither is there much worry about nuclear warfare, for no bombs would ever strike their locality, — Wishful thinking but that is America. Youth frequently is complacent and non-adventurous. They want security and re- laxation after the long years of struggle in protecting our American way of life. War though terrible and devastating has also a brighter side which has given every youth a chance to learn first hand how the other half lives in a diminishing world. We will watch with interest the launching of man on the moon and follow, Come what may. We hope first for a better world of peace and justice. We have in our hands the power and the strength to grow and to build. For our way of life is a good one—strong and free and full of promise. The thought also comes to mind—The earth, not the heavens, was made for man. Just recently man has traveled to the briny depths of the ocean and found that the wealth of the centuries lies hidden under the ocean waves. Scientists have even suggested that sea weeds may be a panacea for com- bating disease or may be eaten as nourish- ment in the future. The thought of soaring into the celestial blue is perhaps just a mere folly, while sinking to the ocean's floor could reveal miracles which God has meant for us to use. Who can say what riches and wonders the mysterious oceans and celestial heavens hold in store for us? Only the Master of the universe has the answer, and in due season He will send forth his teachers to every haven and clime with messages suited to our needs. To those who delve into the secrets of the Universe, the depths of the sea, and endeavor to solve the mysteries of the world itself; we owe our thanks for the inspiration they hove given us, to look towards the Future; ever-onward, ever-upward. To those who have the ingenuity and genius to forge ahead into the Unknown; we dedicate this, our 1960 Yearbook, Flight. Linda Reece
