After years of greatness, many people felt that darkness had fallen on our halls, and that FPHS had lost its life and its influence. 2 However, those of us here at the reservation know that we have not fallen behind, but we are pressing for¬ ward, stronger than ever. Regardless of what you have felt about the Indians in the past, the 1985-1986 Sequoyah staff invites you to 3 Take A Look At Us Now Fair Park is alive and on the go. The pursuit of academic excellence and a wide range of activities keep our student body moving, working, and reaping many rewards. Students continued to improve and achieve in their studies, while once again the FPHS football team was a district contender. The famous marching band con¬ tinued to thrill crowds at ballgames and parades, and the JROTC units brought much pride to our school. The first Miss Sequoyah Pageant was held in October, and the pep squad was reorganized. Reservation Day was held in con¬ junction with Homecoming. 4 A fresh new spirit seemed to prevail as students displayed positive attitudes. Teachers worked extra hard to instill knowledge and encourage achievement. Yes, Fair Park High School is alive and well. We boast in a proud heritage and we move with high ex¬ pectations of our promising future. As we reflect on 1985-1986, perhaps our finest year yet, you take a look at us as we . . . 5 8 Prepare For The Future Academic excellence and prepar¬ ing to face the real” world was a primary focus for Fair Park students. Diligent study became more impor¬ tant with the new 2.0 grade point re¬ quirements for extra-curricular eligibility. New graduation requirements found more students enrolled in Algebra I classes. Computer Literacy became a must for new freshmen, and Library Science was eliminated. ChemCom was added as a new science alter¬ native. Homework was still required, par¬ ticularly as finals approached. Study¬ ing in advance and lots of cramming brought either the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat when final report cards came in May. fake A Break To Refuel The cafeteria staff continued to provide delicious meals, and an increased number of faculty members seemed to partake. Many students still brought sack lunches, and some teachers ate more during second period than most did during the noon hour. Girls ' purses still carried more suckers than pictures, and at Reservation Day we all pigged out. . . . Enjoy The Good Times Nothing could replace the fun moments at FPHS. Catching up on the latest news, being with that special boy, laughing, clowning, singing, and just be¬ ing with friends, all were a part of the good times. Getting to know your teachers and holidays were also great. The fun also included learning the new fads in fashion, hearing the latest new hit song, and seeing who got away with “murder with the new substitute teacher. Cheerleaders, band, athletes, and Miss Se¬ quoyah, Reservation Day, field trips, eating, and no homework ... fun. 13 . .. Remember Homecoming Week . .. Set Examples For The Young wm In all that we did this year, we know that many little ones watched us with eager eyes, longing for the day they too would become an “Indian. As we recognized our responsibility to lead those who come after us, we remembered that those who have gone before laid a firm foundation for us. As we prepare for the future of the reservation,” we must reflect upon our past and all the great examples it provided. 16 Fair Park High School 1928-1986 Construction of Fair Park High School began in the spring of 1928 and its completion made it possible for school to open for the 1928-1929 session. The original building was constructed to accommodate 500 students at a cost of $481,000. Since the original plant was built, two additional wings, an annex, and a new gymnasium — industrial arts complex have been added. The building has been remodeled several times since its construc¬ tion. Fair Park has known eight principals in its days. Mr. James Ward was the first to sit at the helm from 1928 until 1937. Those who followed included Edward Lee Alberson, E. H. Herron, Earl A. McKenzie, B. H. Brantley, Clem Henderson, Johnny Bilberry, and our present principal, Roland Antoine, Sr. Fair Park became the second public high school in the city of Shreveport after the closing of Hope Street School. Fair Park now exists as one of a number of high schools in Caddo Parish and has a consistent enrollment of around 1300 students. As the city of Shreveport celebrates its sesquicentennial year, we felt it only appropriate to reflect on our great school as it has evolved from its early beginning to its present state. Come walk with us through the pages of our history as we reflect our past in pictures. 17 19 1940-1949 PICTURES ARE AS FOLLOWS: (1) Frances Rogers, beauty. 1942; (2) E. We are grateful for our heritage and we are excited about where we are going. We are confident that the contributions that we have made this year will be added to the pages of our history, to continue the great tradition of the “reservation” for those who come after us. 32 Faculty Counselors and Librarians Point the Way to Learning Athalean Archey Counselor Jesse Cornelius Counselor Maxine Mayo Counselor Home, Farm, and Industry, The Keys to Our Economy Connie Cockerham Home Economics Ruthie Dunn Home Economics Nettie Pamplin Home Economics ¥ Eddie Lathon Woodwork Garfield White Metals Thelda Baker English, Spanish Ginny Boyd English, French Sharon Buford English Sandra Cook English, Speech Phyllis Garner English r M Debra McCauley English Margaret Thompson English A Curley White English Pearlean Williams English, Journalism Verdia Williams English English Gives the Basis for Communicati on 39 Susan Baston Geometry, Algebra Patricia Fox Advance Math, Computer Science Geometry, Algebra Working With Numbers Linda Gant Algebra, Consumer Math Lonzie Green Algebra, Consumer Math 4 Rosie Hudson Medical Careers Math John Kelly Algebra 40 Lloyd Nelson Consumer Math Jan Nichols Computer Literacy Thomas Parker Algebra, Math II V. Well, here are some very good incentives — FREE COLLEGE TUITION: State law provides exemption from tuition payments in all state supported Colleges in Louisiana for all active members of the Louisiana National Guard. This exemption may be claimed for five (5) separate years or until receipt of a bachelor’s degree, whichever occurs first. $1500 ENLISTMENT BONUS or $4000 IN EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE High school seniors and graduates who enlist in certain National Guard units may receive a $1500 enlistment bonus, or $4000 in educational assistance. SPLIT TRAINING PROGRAM Split training means that your Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training in the National Guard (which must be completed within a twelve (12) month time frame) can be staggered to fit your personal schedule. For example, you can take Basic Training the summer of your junior year. Consider it a paid full-time summer job. During your senior year of high school, you will go to the monthly National Guard meetings. Consider it a paid part- time time job. Then you can take your Advanced Individual Training the next summer, be paid for that too, and be home in time to attend college, business or vocational school in September. That ' s two summers of full-time employ¬ ment, and two years of part-time employment. CALL YOUR LOCAL NATIONAL GUARD RECRUITER AT: NATIONAL GUARD SSG JOSEPH S. TRAVILLION 400 E. STONER AVE.
