History Of Fair Park High Construction of Fair Park began in the spring of 1928 and its com¬ pletion that fall made possible the opening of the school for the 1928- 1929 session. The original building was con¬ structed to accommodate 500 stu¬ dents at a cost of $481,000. Mr. J. Ward was appointed princi¬ pal of the new school in 1928, and served in this position until his death in 1937. By 1931 Fair Park had grown so much that it became necessary to add two new wings to the original building. One wing was used for classrooms while the other pro¬ vided the school with a greatly needed auditorium. During 1937-1938 the annex, con¬ sisting of four classrooms, was ad¬ ded. Mr. Edward Lee Alberson was named principal of Fair Park in 1937, and served the school until his retirement in the spring of 1957. In 1956 an extensive remodeling program was undertaken with completion of a new gymnasium- industrial arts area and a music building being added to the size of the school plant. Mr. E. H. Herron, who for a num¬ ber of years had served as assis¬ tant principal, was appointed principal in 1957, and served in this capacity until his death in the early spring of 1960. Dr. Earl A. McKenzie, former teacher, principal, and supervisor, was appointed principal in 1960, and left Fair Park when he was named assistant to the Superin¬ tendent of Caddo Parish Schools on August 15, 1966. Mr. B. H. Brantly, former teacher and assistant principal, was ap¬ pointed principal in 1966, and served until his resignation Janu¬ ary 25, 1971, to take a position on the staff of Northeast Louisiana University. Mr. Clem Henderson, former teacher, coach, and assistant prin¬ cipal, was named principal of Fair Park in January, 1971 and served until he took a leave in 1976. During the summer of 1971, forty- three years after the original plant was constructed, Fair Park again received a “face-lifting”. Renova¬ tion began at the close of school in May, 1971, at a cost of $575,000. When school opened in Septem¬ ber almost all construction was completed. Metal windows were installed, and the exterior surface of the building was sandblasted and wa¬ terproofed. The administrative of¬ fices were renovated, enlarged, centrally heated, and air condi¬ tioned. The counselors’ offices were relocated, enlarged, and air conditioned. Biology Classrooms were moved from first floor to the third floor to create a centralized science department. The library was moved from third floor to first to provide a more convenient loca¬ tion, refurnished, carpeted, and redecorated. A small addition ad¬ jacent to the new media center provides space for a professional library for use by faculty members during their unencumbered per¬ iods. Two large additional class¬ rooms were made available in the gymnasium-industrial arts area when the career center opened. These were assigned for beginning typewriting classes. The interior of the building was repaired, painted and new boilers were in¬ stalled to replace the old ones that were antiquated and inadequate. The teachers’ lounge area was re¬ furnished, redecorated, and car¬ peted. Mr. Johnny Bilberry, former teacher, coach and assistant prin¬ cipal, was named acting principal for one year in 1976 during Mr. Henderson’s leave. He was ap¬ pointed principal during the Sum¬ mer 1977 and left Fair Park when he was named Supervisor of Health and Physical Education in Caddo Parish in the Fall 1977. Our present principal, Mr. Roland Antoine, Sr., former teacher, coach, and assistant principal was appointed to the position during the Fall, October, 1977. During his administration a medical careers program has been added to the curriculum. Even though the Fair Park plant is fifty-four years old, it is still a very functional plant that contin¬ ues to serve the school system well as it has for so many years. 2
