S we move from one class to another, five days a week, month after month, we begin to feel that our school is just a dull old place that has been here and will be here for centuries. This isn't true because our alma mater, Fair Park, has a most interesting background and is a compara- tively new school. In 1926 the old Shreveport High on Hope Street was trans- ferred to the new building of C. E. Byrd on Line Avenue. However, in just two years, this building was crowded so much that a need was seen for another high school. Thus, in the spring of 1928 a field on the edge of the Green- wood Road was chosen, and the building of the new school was begun. At a total cost of S-i81,000, including the building site and furnishings, the Fair Park High School was completed and ready for the fall semester of 1928-29 school year, although just freshmen and sophomores were moved to the new school. ln the 1929-50 school year many clubs sprang up and such sports as football, basketball, and track were taken up. lt was in this year that the Pow Vfow was founded under the sponsorship of Miss Delia Munday. It was also during this session that Fair Park became a fully accredited high school. In 1951 the Pow W'ow was in the full swing of events. It was in this year that the first Sequoyah was published by the senior class. XVe are very fortunate to have an original alma mater song at Fair Park. Few high schools do. While Mr. Hines Sims was band director between 1955 and 1944, the song was written by him. -The Pow Vlfow, January 19, 1950 Fair Park has had only two principals. Mr. W. Wartl served as the first. Mr. E. L. Alberson, our present prin- cipal, came in january 1937, after the death of Mr. Wartl. Mr. IE. H. Herron, the Assistant Principal, has been at Fair Park since 1951. These men have watched Fair Park grow in enrollment to 1350 students and 57 faculty members. They have seen the building enlarged and the curriculum expanded and enriched.
