MARY ALLENA fTTl'N6x6WfYYTTN Fora THE theme of this 1942 Sequoyah We chose to turn from the frenzied haste and strife of mod- ern civilization to a period of calm- ness and modesty, characterized by a slowness of tempo and by a happiness centered around the family and the home. Such a pe- riod is the one We here present, the Gay Nineties, an era of pompa- dours and bustles, gas lamps and family albums, mustache cups and lea-of-mutton sleeves, Gibson Girls and bicycles built for two. lf this book embodies in a small Way the spirit of this by-gone era and, at the same time, has cap- tured the memories of our Fair Park family of l94l-42, the building of this volume has not been in vainl 1 h I I. , . MUSIC AND PUBLICATIONS K' f 4T'1fN1'3l'T'lf 4 DEDI ATION ALMOST fifty years have passed since the era known as the Gay Ninetiesf' the era when amusements were few, and Sis and her beau would sit in the parlor for hours look- ing at the red plush album where the family Was pictor- ially recorded. Although the family album has long ago been shoved out of sight in the far corner of the at- tic, We have brushed it off and revived it as a theme for this book. We are proud to present this al- bum ot our Fair Park family for 1941-42. ln fitting rnanner, We are proud to dedicate our al- bum to the wholesome cooper- ative family spirit to be found here at Fair Park. .,...,-. ,... This year the Pow Wow staff faces the most difficult task in its history. These were the words spoken by lere Tillery as he was interviewed amid the clatter and excitement of Room 214. To help the school do its part in national defense is our definite aim. ln fact, the nation's vic- tory will depend greatly upon the public spirit and cooperation fostered by journalism. And journalism is fighting for its very life blood, freedom of the press. During the past year, lere went on proudly, the Pow Wow has been recognized by critics as one of the best high school publications in the country. lt attained national honors from the Quill and Scroll and the Columbia Press Association and the All American rating from the Na- tional Scholastic Press Association. Maybe you'd like some information about our staff and our classes, lere asked helpfully. The journalism department is composed of two advanced classes which, under the leader- ship of Mrs. Yarborough, compose and edit the Pow Wow. Mrs. Edith Barisas has charge of the beginner classes which assist the advanced classes in publishing the paper by selling ads and making collections. The Editorial Staff is headed by lere Tilleryp Pearl Faye Whittington and loy Willis are managing editors: Mary Anne D'Anna, Delois Pickering, Marie Labenne, Betty Keel, and Clara Fern Hunter are assistant editors: Luther Lynn and Bill Wood are sports editors. Under the guidance of Miss Martha Louise Hudson, faculty advisor, the Editorial Staff of the Sequoyah has tried to present a yearbook that will long be remembered by all Fair Park stu- dents, and to present a book entirely different from those previously edited. Woriderful co-operation has existed among the members of the editorial staff composed of lune Stuart, editor-in-chief, lim Allred, assistant editor and art editor, Betty Mae Barnthouse, leature editor and literary editor: Beth Bass, club editor, Ewing McDonald, sport editor, and Dick Lowe, photograph editor. These senior editors are assisted by Glen Graves, typist, lean Warren, loyce Scogtn, Pauline McMain, lean Morrison, Betty Bay, and Charles Barney. These boys and girls have complete charge of the makeup of the book. The Ad Stall, with Mary Allena Scott as business manager, accomplished its foremost desire: to make their work of selling ads and drawing dummies both successful and enjoyable. Miss Frances Palmer, faculty advertising adviser, explained that more ads were sold this year than ever before in spite of national economy drives. The ads sold by members of the staff furnish the chief source of finance for the annual. The Business Staff under the supervision of Miss Chrystine Moore took over the financial end of the yearbook, selling books on the installment plan and collecting club page money. All students who gain positions on the various staffs of the yearbook do so by hard work and never tiring efforts. Before fourteen thousand fans and on a beautiful Thanksgiving afternoon, the F air Park Indi- ans tamed the Byrd Yellow Iackets for the third consecutive year. The Yellow lackets were un- able to hold the Indians downg the Braves unleashed a powerful running attack that saw them drive to the enemies' eight-yard line where the ball was moved back on penalties in the first quarter. In the closing minutes of the second period, Melvin Pigg took a Byrd punt on his own thirty-yard line and returned it to the Iackets' thirty-nine yard line. The next play saw Pigg ad- vance the pigskin to the Byrd ten-yard stripe. Behind perfect interference Turnbow skirted left end for the touchdown. Midway in the third quarter the Indians staged a sustained sixty-five yard march that paid off in dividends. Ralph Iames gathered in a twenty-seven yard pass from Pigg. Bernard Walker hit the line for the score. The Iackets recovered a fumble and drove to the Indians' five. The Warriors tightened and held Byrd for downs. On the next play a Iacket slipped through the line and blocked a punt scoring the Byrd tally. The Indian line failed to yield an inch after the kickoff in the first half. Fair Park 12-Byrd 6.
