sif A af RETIREMENT A native of Missouri, Miss Virginia Elliott first came to Fair Lawn High School in 1946 as a teacher of art and history. Six years later, she was asked to accept the position of Director of Guidance, the position previously held by Mr. Rothermel. In this capacity she helped to create the Guidance Department as we know it today, fulfilling the needs of the young people in Fair Lawn. The many recipients of awards in the awards assem- bly at the end of the school year attest to that fact. After twenty-six years of service to Fair Lawn High School, Miss Elliott has decided to retire. She plans to devote her time to sewing and the crafts. One of her favorite hobbies is design- ing her own Christmas cards. On behalf of the students and faculty of Fair Lawn High School, Crimson Tide wishes Miss Elliott a fond farewell, thank- ing her for all she has done. Virginia Elliott September of 1954 brought Philip Gariss to Fair Lawn High School. Mr. Gariss was a certified teacher of both Latin and German. After teaching for two years, he became Fair Lawn High School's one-man German Department for the next fourteen years. Mr. Gariss was known to all as the master of the tape recorder. His vast collection of tapes ranged from Beethoven to the rock musical Hair performed in German. A morning would not go by without the music of his tapes. Mr. Gariss is now retiring to his home in Denville, New Jersey to devote his time to his wife, his roses, and his dogl The staff of Crimson Tide and the Class of '72 join the faculty in wishing Mr. Gariss the best of luck in the coming years. 'Nh Philip Gariss Anne Heffler I , it-5 , 'l , .s K 1 Mrs. Anne Heffler was a graduate of Montclair State Col lege with a double major and a B.A. in Latin and English. Before coming to Fair Lawn High School, Mrs. Heffler taught in Garfield High Schobl for seven and a half years. She -has been on the staff of F .L.H.S. for sixteen years teaching Latin, English, and Humanities. Mrs. Heffler plans to travel with her husband and devote more time to her family, yet she must admit, she will miss Fair Lawn High School. We wish her hap- piness and joy in the coming years.
