Six years later, she was asked to accept the position of Director of Guidance, the position previously held by Mr. Rothermel. In this capacity she helped to create the Guidance Department as we know it today, fulfilling the needs of the young people in Fair Lawn. The many recipients of awards in the awards assem- bly at the end of the school year attest to that fact. After twenty-six years of service to Fair Lawn High School, Miss Elliott has decided to retire. She plans to devote her time to sewing and the crafts. One of her favorite hobbies is design- ing her own Christmas cards. On behalf of the students and faculty of Fair Lawn High School, Crimson Tide wishes Miss Elliott a fond farewell, thank- ing her for all she has done. Virginia Elliott September of 1954 brought Philip Gariss to Fair Lawn High School. Mr. Gariss was a certified teacher of both Latin and German. After teaching for two years, he became Fair Lawn High School's one-man German Department for the next fourteen years. Mr. Gariss was known to all as the master of the tape recorder. His vast collection of tapes ranged from Beethoven to the rock musical Hair performed in German. A morning would not go by without the music of his tapes. Mr. Gariss is now retiring to his home in Denville, New Jersey to devote his time to his wife, his roses, and his dogl The staff of Crimson Tide and the Class of '72 join the faculty in wishing Mr. Gariss the best of luck in the coming years. 'Nh Philip Gariss Anne Heffler I , it-5 , 'l , .s K 1 Mrs. Anne Heffler was a graduate of Montclair State Col lege with a double major and a B.A. in Latin and English. Before coming to Fair Lawn High School, Mrs. Heffler taught in Garfield High Schobl for seven and a half years. She -has been on the staff of F .L.H.S. for sixteen years teaching Latin, English, and Humanities. Mrs. Heffler plans to travel with her husband and devote more time to her family, yet she must admit, she will miss Fair Lawn High School. We wish her hap- piness and joy in the coming years. Like Maria, Norman had to adapt to a new school day. In England he was accustomed to going to school from 9:00 - 4:00 with a one and a half hour lunch break and a fifteen minute coffee break in the morning. The first three years of high school are spent learning a general course. The next two years are of oneis own choice. At the age of sixteen it is possible to leave school but if one wishes to continue on to the university, an additional two years of study are required. Norman is majoring in mathematics and hopes to have a career in engi- neering. His impression of America before coming to the U.S. was as follows: The male, usually smoking a cigar, wears the striped suit, and carries a 35 millimeter camera in a brown case around his neck. The female goes around the stores saying, 'I love that! I must take one home. '1 Norman now views Americans differently, finding them Cin gen- eralj very friendly. His smile will always be re- membered long after the sounds of his final ucheerio, friendsw has gone. EXCHANGE TUDE T Maria Pin Guerrero is from Guayaquil, Ecuador. She arrived in the States on August 6, 1971 and is currently residing with the Tannebergers. The second of four children, her chief desire is to meet new people and to communicate and exchange ideas with them. Maria has successfully adapted to a new way of life and more importantly, a new eductional system. The children in Ecuador are accustomed to starting school at the age of three, attending primary school for six years as well as high school. Colleges vary from five to six years in length. Maria's goal is to be a literature teacher. If, when she goes back to Ecuador she passes all her exams, she will go on to the university. Maria has been impressed with the friendliness of those around her and will miss the U.S. and the high school when she goes back. In the future, she would like to visit again. Maria has found this to be a unique experience and discovered people are basically the same everywhere. Lots of luck, Maria! MRS. GERTRUDE MEYERS MR. DONALD EVES MR. HAROLD HOCH Mrs. Gertrude Meyers has been with us at Fair Lawn High School for the past thirteen years, but the lure of distant places has beck- oned her from the halls of F.L.H.S. to a retirement of traveling with her husband. Mrs. Meyers substituted at the high school for three years before becoming a regular full-time teacher. During the following ten years of teaching, Mrs. Meyers also served in the capacity of Chairman of the Mathematics Department. A graduate of Keuka College where she studied mathematics and chemistry, Mrs. Meyers also attended Teacheris College of Columbia. Having already traveled through the Caribbean and Europe, Mr. and Mrs. Meyers hope to include Alaska, Hawaii, and Africa in their future itineraries. We wish them the best of luck in their travels. A graduate of the University of Virginia and Columbia University, Mr. Eves has been with Fair Lawn High School for fifteen years. Mr. Evcs came to Fair Lawn High School from Nutley High School in September of 1957. He was the sponsor of the Hippocrates Club and arranged for numerous doctors to come speak with club mem- be s. lWith an M.A. in Biology, Mr. Eves has become well known for his outstanding work in the field of ornithology and the study of algae. F.L.H.S. bids a fond farewell to Donald Eves, wishing him the best of luck in the coming years. Mr. Vincent Fieseler has been with Fair Lawn High School for thirteen years. Having obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Seton Hall, he went on to earn his master's degree at Teacher's Col- lege of New York. Mr. Fieseler has been dedicated to teaching and it is with deep regret that we see him retire. When asked what his future plans were, his only intentions now are to take a rest and travel. His success as a teacher can be attributed to his philosophy that teaching should include the latest and most accurate informa- tion and, therefore, a teacher should never stop learning himself. The Crimson Tide offers him best wishes for the future. Joining the teaching staff in Fair Lawn High School's second year of existence, Mr. Harold Hoch has been an integral member of the Science Department for the past twenty-eight years. Having attended Muhlenberg College and Columbia University, Mr. Hoch taught Chemistry and advanced science. In addition to his teaching, over the years he has been a sponsor of various clubs including the photography club, the amateur radio club, the chemistry club, and Student Council. Mr. Hoch has no definite plans for his retirement, but he hopes to travel and catch up on his reading. On behalf of Fair Lawn High School, the yearbook staff sincerely wishes him the best of luck on his retirement. Mr. Lloyd Siegrist has been on the staff of Fair Lawn High School since 1944, the second year of the Fair Lawn High School organiza- lion. A graduate of Millersville State College in Pennsylvania, Mr. Siegrist is the sixth oldest member of the staff, service-wise. ln all probability, he will return to his home state of Pennsylvania. When Fair Lawn High School says good-by to Lloyd Siegrist, it will be saying good-by not only to one teacher of Industrial Arts but to a part of F.L.H.S. history. Known to most students in her capacity as the school nurse, Mrs. Mary Cozad graduated from Paterson General Hospital School of Nursing in 1940 and later received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Seton Hall University. Before coming to Fair Lawn, Mrs. Cozad's experience in her profession ranged from being a nurse in the United States Navy to being a public health nurse in Wayne. After attending to the needs of Fair Lawn High School's sudents for fourteen years, Mrs. Cozad will retire to pursue some of her favorite interests. She hopes to travel extensively and perhaps settle down to work in the West. Wherever Mrs. Cozard goes, she will be taking the best wishes of the staff and students of Fair Lawn High School with her.
