Upward Flight On September 3, 1953, a group of fifty-nine Freshmen started on a flight that would take four years to reach the final landing field. Our air-line hostesses, Mrs. Herman Ivey and Mrs. L. A. Ross, helped us to get settled and to plan our routes (English, Mathamatics, Science, Home Economics, Physical Education), which we would follow for the nextnine months. During these months, various clubs and athle- tics took up part of our time. Along with our studying, we enjoyed our parties. Then we stopped to refuel and take a vacation. On September 2, 1954, withour mindsactive, forty-six Sophomores started climb- ing again. The air was getting thin, but we only had three more stops to make. This year our air-line hostesses were Mrs. Bi 11 Hedrick and Miss Lucille Bowers. We en- joyed fellowship together along with our work. We sponsored the basketball tourna- ment between the classes, a semi-formal dance, and also the sale of candy. Several of our girls (dressed as sailors) served as waitresses at the Junior-Senior banquet. Our favorite subject that year was probably Biology. We dissected frogs, fish, and even a cat. After what seemed a short time we again stopped to refuel. On into Junior Land we flew. This year, 1955, because several had decided they didn't want to complete the flight for some reason or other, we only had one hostess, Mrs. James Payne. Mrs. Payne had a big job helping us to raise money for our Junior- Senior banquet. We became salesmen of magazines andsweaters. Mrs. Hedrick helped us plan our banquet to honor our upperclassmen. We chose as our theme for the ban- quet Colonial Days. We became proud owners of class rings. Girls Are Better Than Ever was proved when we presented our Junior play under the direction of Mrs. Lawrence Lyndon. Our fellow classmates joined clubs and helped on the school pub- lications. Five of our group were chosen as marshals to help with the commencement exercises. Then we made our last stop before Senior Land. As the 1956 school year approached, only twenty-eight were left to finish the flight. Mrs. Clarence Fowler was our hostess this year. Lawrence Albright was el- ected pilot; Bill Armentrout, co-pilot; Jo Ann Jenkins, navigator; who logs our flight; and accountant, Mary Frances Coggins, who checks all money spent for fuel. We became magazine salesmen again, and then soldChristmas cards. All this was for the trip to Washington, D. C. in the spring, which we had looked forward to for so long. Now, because we have finished our flight on the plane we started off on, many of us are planning to make reservations on a larger and more important plane in which some will be taking up nursing, teaching, business administration, and many other different careers. Before we leave we would like to say Thank You , to the teachers in grammar school for all you did for us; to our high school teachers, who showed us we would have to Aim High and Hold Your Aim , and to Mr. Kearns, for being s 5 patient and understanding to us all these years. As we leave we will never forget all the wonderful things that happened during our years at Fair Grove. After we are gone, we will always proudly say, Fair Grove is my School!
