THE SHIP S LOG The great educatuonal Iuner, FAIR GROVE, welcomed on board 67 eager, but restless crewmen to begun a four year voyage unto the ocean of hugher Iearnung durung the years of T952 I956 A brusk autumn wund seemed to encourage those who were doubtful or uncertaun After presentung my passport, I turned to watch my fellow members as they prepared to clumb aboard To some ut was lust an every day occurance, others were en thusuastuc, yet there were those who had no desure to complete the trup None of us were too certaun about our course, but our Commandung Offucers, Mrs Kenneth Murphy and Mr Bull Garruson, helped each to fund a safe route that had been traveled by many upper classmen Immeduately we were hut by Hurrucane Englush whuch un susted on stayung un our path the enture trup We readuly learned that we were on neuther a cruuse nor sught seeung tour but a voyage consustung of courses un Englush Mathematucs, Foreugn Languages, Scuence, Home makung, and Commercual work Athletucs and varuous clubs claumed the tume and talents of many class members durung the Freshman year Amud our studues and actuvutues we enuoyed fellowshup together partucularly at our weuner roasts Our Sophomore year proved to be more excutung than the furst As we grew more accustomed to hugh school, we developed a better understandung of uts purpose Perhaps thus was chuefly due to Mrs E F K Roof and Mr John Cox, who steered us un the rught path lest we should go astray Our furst operatuons were per formed by dussectung frogs whuch we caught before comung aboard We soon realuzed that an educatuon consusted of study, work, and often pleasure but not pleasure alone In September we set saul agaun after a few months of relaxatuon As we counted the passports for Junuors vulle, several of the crew were mussung Lack of unterest, marruage, and change of resudence were the maun reasons for the absences Mr Cox and Mrs James Payne helped us to sponsor many prolects for the prumary purpose of rausung money Our socual feature of the year was the Junuor Senuor Banquet at whuch we were hosts to our upper classmen Our theme was very appropruate Over the Seas The hughlught of the year was when we became proud owners of class rungs for whuch we had labored hard Our crew became actors and actresses when we presented the play, Lavender and Old Lace Many of our members who had not dustunguushed them athletucs Yes, we feel that our group us a true representatuon of Faur Grove because each unduvudual has played an umportant role un the betterment of our school As the fall of l955 approached, only 4I Senuors were on board to begun the last year of our voyage By now, we were nearly exhausted from the many hours of combuned study and work but the Iughts at the Port of Graduatuon beckoned us onward One whurlpool after another engulfed us, untul ut seemed that perhaps all would be lost, but lust as the wunds were strongest, the skues the darkest, or the water the roughest some Un seen Hand un the form of Truth Honor, Wusdom, or Love offered to Iuft us out of the abyss and help us start anew Our Commandung Offucer, Mrs Clarence Fowler stood by us and urged us not to faul Agaun we be came merchants, sellung our wares to make a tour of Washungton, D C and to meet Senuor expenses Wuthout the guudance and understandung of Mr E T Kearns and the faculty we mught be druftung along at sea wuthout a specufuc course We often forget to say, Thank you for the small favors you ve done for us, but we haven t forgotten your help when we needed you most ls ut duty ambutuon prude fruendshup destunatuon that has help us together these years'9 No ut us a combunatuon of these and a sense of belongung to each other and to our class that have made the rough waves seem smoother The tume us drawung near when we wull be partung each hus own way We wull not recall all that has happened durung these years classes dates ballgames dances But occasuonally, memorues wull slup back unto our munds of those precuous moments we spent together Is there one who would not have to pause and brush a tear asude as he remembers those pruceless moments of feIlowshup'9 Hold dearly the thoughts of the past that they may hold our class together untul the last drop of water un the ocean has vanushed We are fast approachung the Port of Graduatuon As I get a closer glumpse of the harbor, I fund that the Iughts we assumed were lughtung our way unto port are not lust Iughts but stars gleamung un the heavens Closer and closer we come The anchor us dropped We slowly prepare to go ashore though we wush to remaun on board Wuth a feelung of accomplushment we gaze unto God s furmament and softly whusper, Yes, we have been 'to the stars through duffucultues DIXIE BLACK Class Hustoruan Sponsored by GUILFORD DAIRY I I - ' - uu uu ' ' II II .1 ' ' ' -' selves in extra-curricular activities rushed forward with honor and service in the school publications, clubs, or I .
