FL 34091 Q ' T931 1-ii ':?E:,z ,g I-.TH Nw 'r-- fc- ,. . 7 15 May 1984 Mayport, Florida Dear Fahrion Family and Friends, The vast majority of what you are about to see in this Cruise Book requires no explanation from me. The pictures are representative of a superb ship manned by a superb crew carrying out tasking in support of our Nation's policy in the Mediterranean Sea. I assure you that FAI-IRION met and exceeded the challenge on each and every occasion, whatever the task at hand. But I'm also sure you knew that without my telling you. The one concept that might require an explanation is the 'Lone Ranger' theme that you will see periodically throughout the book. It began as a gimmick, the natural fallout of the song we selected to play as we 'broke away' from replenishment ships after refuelings, rearmings, and resupply while underway. 'I'he song--the William Tell Overture--The Lone Ranger Theme. But the more we thought about it, the more we realized that the concept of the Lone Ranger embodied that which FAHRION and her crew stood for: a single, cohesive unit pitted against the opposition, be it a hostile force, the elements of nature, or simply the time and distance factors involved in a deployment. We in the ship and you, our families and loved ones, formed an unbeatable team during our maiden deployment, a team that looked inward to ourselves and upward to our Creator for the strength to do what we alone had to do. A team that did not require extensive outside resources to continue the task at hand, but drawing on our faith and confidence in ourselves and in each other carried on with the job--and did it better than anyone else. The jobs were many and varied and included staying at sea longer than anyone else when we were required to do so, building our ovm repair parts to repair broken equipment when the 'system' couldn't support us, and maintaining a 'norrnal home life for the children for six and a half months while Dad was away with no phone calls and few letters. We all did the job we were called on to do, and did it superbly. I hope you feel that the 'Lone Ranger' is a fitting theme for our MED l-'84 deployment, because I certainly do. Even though they let me wear the white hat and the mask, all of us, crew and families alike, are the Lone Ranger, and the results of our deployment prove that together, we can do anything. With admiration and respect for each of you, B. ' B. MITCHELL, JR. lil li ll'
