SENIOR TRACK 1929 The Track team of 1929 was the greatest that had ever been in the history of the Fabens High School. For the second time in two years they walked off with the El Paso County meet held at Fabens in March. Three weeks later they took part in the District meet and placed third in the meet which was won by El Paso and second going to Rankin. Two weeks later they took part in the State meet at Austin. Altho they did not place in the finals they came close in the semi-finals. ' Captain ,lay Reeves was the outstanding man of the team. He was good in the 100, 220 and 440 besides the mile relay. He also took part in the broad jump and shot put. He graduated in june. Irish O'Donnell was another man who was to graduate and who was a valuable man to the team. He could run anything from the 100 to the half mile and beat most of them. He was a member of the mile relay team that took second at the District meet at El Paso. His specialty was the broad jump and the 220. H. L. McCune was the hardest working man on the team. Although not' outstanding in any one event, he always could be depended upon to win his share ofthe points. His specialty was the high hurdles and the weights. He also graduated in june. The fourth man we were to lose by graduation was Jewell VValto11, who had no peer in the shot put. He also pole vaulted, threw the discus and jave- lin and high jumped. ' Sam Cresap, altho only a Sophomore, showed that he was a coming track man. He ran the half and on the relay, besides broad jumping. He will be' the best man on the team next year. Frank Magee, the high jumping wizard , always places in this event. Be- sides the high jump, he ran the hurdlesein fine shape and could be depended upon to fill in on the relay team. He has another year. Bob W'hitaker was our outstanding javelin thrower. Besides the javelin he ran on the relay team and the hurdles and pole vaulted. Another year and he will place in the State meet in the javelin as he missed qualifying by inches this year. With the return of Wliitaker, Magee, Cresap and three men who did not letter but placed in the County meet, Fabens ought to win the County trophy for the third time in 1930. . Those placing in the County meet besides those above were Hubert Nunn in the half mile, Willie Davis in the quarter and Clarence Black in the mile. All of these men, including Mr. Lakey, the coach, received sweaters from the School Board in token of their work. V PAGE FIFTY OIN I'

Boys and girls from the fourth to the eighth grades were permitted to enter the meet if they wished. All were classified in either A, B, C or D classes based upon age, weight and height. , Our class A boys and girls were the ones that won most of the points for our team. Those in classes B, C and ,D also helped a great deal. We won the meet with 40 points, followed closely by Cadwallader school. Of this 40 points our A boys and girls made 30. Outstanding performers were Howard Brown, Hugh O'Donnel1, Rachel Bickley, Johnnie Hendricks, John Brown, Starlin Clifford, Robert Barrett, Arturo Rodriguez, Corrinne 'Whitaker, Blanche Menefee, Kenzie Turner and Dorothy Pat- ridge. This is the third time that Fabens has won the junior Track Championship in succession, thereby giving us the Track Trophy permanently. As most of these will be in high school the next year or two we expect to have a real track team in a few years. ' - PAGE FIFTY THREE
