FOOTBALL FOR NINETEEN TWENTY-NINE The football season was not in the ordinary sense of the term a success. From the start both the team and the coach worked under adverse conditions. At the beginning of the season Coach Bell realized that most of his men did not know the fundamentals of football, be- cause it was their first year to play football. There was a scar- city of material, there being only six letter men in all. The first game was played on our own field against the El Paso Night Shift. We went into the game determined to win and did so 7 to 0. Next we journeyed to Las Cruces and played them. For one half of the game We held them scoreless, but in the second half we became overpowered and they ran up a big score. The next game we played the Night Shift in El Paso. In the first half we made two touchdowns but neither one counted. Not knowing what this was for and the referee being unable to explain, we became discouraged. At the half we rallied and came back ready to win. We was again penalized after a long gain. At this stage Hubert Nunn was sent off the field and we was not able to fill his place. The next week we again went to El Paso to play Austin Junior High. The field was muddy as a result of a rain the night before and we were beat again. On October the first we played Cathedral on our field. We played hard but were overpowered by them. Next we played Bowie in one of the hardest games ever played in Fabens. They got a twelve point lead in the first of the game but no scores were made after that. Then came the game of the season-the game with Ysleta for the County Championship. It was played in Ysleta on a very pretty day for football. Both teams played hard and the game was very close. After the battle had ended with the score against us there was satisfaction in the fact that we had fought a good fight. PAGE FORTY-SIX

Although handicapped by inexperience he was a hard worker and a good trainer. I-le will be one of the best in the line another year. ARTURO RODRIGUEZ CHa1f Backy Although Arturo did not get into many games he was a close- ly watched man when carrying the ball as his speed carried him past tacklers very easily. With another year's experience he will be one of the best ball carriers in this part of the state. JACK MENEFEE QHalf Backj Fenemee played in every game this year and every position except center and filled them all well. He is a good tackler and a consistent player. He will make a valuable man next year. COOPER BREEDING - QGuardJ Cooch played his first year this year. He was always at his post and fought hard until the final whistle blew. He was never heard to gripe no matter how the breaks were against him. He will make a valuable player next year. STARLIN CLIFFORD CGuard-Tacklej Fats played both guard and tackle this year. He was a stumb- ling block to the backs of the visitors. He was a hard worker and will be a valuable man next year. JOHN AssAD CEndj Assad played his first year this year. Having lost our guards, forwards and jump center of previous years, we started the season with a rather weak team. The only players having had previous experience were Captain Cleo Nunn, and Cora Beth Bickley. The outstanding characteristic of the team was its splendid sportsmanship which was manifested in every game. Each girl worked earnestly and those receiving letters were: Cleo Nunn, Cora Beth Bickley. Eva Cooke, Alpha Mae Woods, Johnnie Wads- worth, Frances Marchbanks and Bernice Trice. Others who supported the team wereg Rose ltancich, Dorothy Patridge, Florene Menefee, Frances Dockray and Corinne Whitaker. The improvement made during the season was shown in the return games with Ysleta and Clint. The fast floor work of Nunn, the accurate shooting of Lefty Woods, with the alertness and quick passing of the rest of the players called forth the best efforts of the opposing teams.
