In 1908 a trio consisting of Pat O'Donnell, C. F. White and jesus Carlos with far reaching vision planned and built a one room school house at the cost of 3500. The money was raised by subscription and the land donated by the Newman Investment Company. The little school grew rapidly, another room was added the following year, fifteen pupils attended and of this number two were Americans. Unlike other pioneer schools, this little school always had a nine months term. P. H. Phelan was the first teacher. His salary was S405 per year. By 1913 more people had moved to Fabens and the trustees felt the time had arrived to seperate the American and Mexican children. The Americans were housed in a room at the rear of the old Camp Jackson, the present site of the Myers Co. Other troubles came thick and fast along the border caus- ed by the Mexican Revolution. This helped to cause a feeling of enmity among the Mexicans. The Mexicans were allowed to remain in the first school building until moved to the old Amer- ican school in 1925. Another strong effort was made and in 1914 the American school was planned and built by J. C. Hansen. This building was used until 1925 when a larger school was built for the growing population of Fabens. Among the teachers who deserve special mention for their deep human sympathy are Miss Lola Gray, Miss Sternberg, now Mrs. Joe Cannon of Van Horn and 'Miss Ellen Kelley of El Paso. The Mexican school has grown full to overflowing during the second semester of the school year just passed. There was an average daily attendance of 185. There are four grade and five teachers, two teachers being employed in the Low First Grade. PAGE THIRTY FIVE
