It has been our opportunity and we have done our best to make the most of it. Perhaps. we have been rewarded by success, perhaps by failure. But final judgment being as it may, We doubt not that there will be some one that is disappointed-with them we shall sufferg and, too, we hope there are some who will be pleased-with them we shall find our enjoyment. We leave our work in your hands, for your criticism-for your approval. The Cotton Boll 555555 5555 55 Spanish Number Volume I Fabens High School PAGE FOUR TO SUPERINTENDENT M. D. WHY I TAUGHT IN FABENS Having been asked to write something for the Annual, in my meager way I wish to express my appreciation of Fabens and this great western country. The two years preceding nineteen and thirty I taught at Asherton, Texas, a town about the size of Fabens. It is located about one hundred and twenty miles from San Antonio in the garden district of Texas. Though my school work was pleasant and I made friends whom I shall ever cherish, the climate was too hot, and I wish- ed to teach in the romantic West. My desire was fulfilled when I was elected at Fabens. I can truthfully say that I have never had as pleasant a year's work as this yearis has proved. The highways bordered by magnificent trees, the glorious sunsets, the purple moun-' tains, and the Spanish atmosphere are sources of delight, es- pecially so to one just coming to this part of Texas. I have came in close contact with pupil and patron and have formed friendships which I can never forget. I am looking forward to the coming year at Fabens and have found hope of even a more pleasant year's work. -ETHEL CORNISH. Hoping for an easier and more enjoyable life for our successors, the Juniors, and the faculty members, we, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred and Thirty, being sound of body and mind do hereby make our last Will and Testament. FIRST, we give, devise, and bequeath to the faculty the memory of, and the desire for, a class of as superior a merit as ours. SECOND, we give, devise, and bequeath our individual earthly possessions as follows: To Mr. Lakey,,our Superintendent, we leave our records of perfect grades and attendances. To Miss Cornish, our Principal, we leave plenty of paper and pencils to check up on tardies and absentees. To Mr. Bell, our Chemistry teacher, we leave pieces of broken test tubes that he may have something to repair the ones broken by our successors next year. To Mr. Quinn, our Economics teacher, we leave our part in the good times had on various picnics. To Miss Smith, our' English teacher, we leave Carlyle's Essay on Burnsv that she may remember the time we spent on it. To Miss Donaghey, our Home Economics teacher, wc leave plenty of charts that she may count her calories each day. To Miss Daniel, our Spanish teacher, we leave our much used Spanish text as souvenirs of our hard study. THIRD, we give, devise and bequeath our individual possessions as follows: VVoodrow McKinney leaves his ability to sympathize with all Scotch writers to Hubert Nunn. Carl Lambert leaves his ability to sleep through all English periods to Frank Magee. Margaret Neumann leaves her pretty eyes' and ability to memorize to Helen Martin. Rose Rancich, known as f'Jackie , leaves her title, the jack Dempsey of Fabens Highv to Cora Beth Bickley. Gwen Breeding leaves her record of Hperfect attendance to Cuca Carbajal. Ramona Vasquez leaves her perfect little mouth and spontaneous temper to Mary Ruth Davis. PAGE FOURTEEN SENIOR CLASS PROPHESY TIME: 1950 I, Rose Rancich, since I have became a famous aviatrix, decided to make a non-stop flight around the world. On the Fourth of July, 1950, as I was getting ready to take off in my aeroplane Tlhe Fabens and while the vast crowd of New York- ers cheered me, a young man dashed out of the crowd yelling, Wait! wait! I want to go, too! I looked around to see who this young man could be and to my surprise it proved to be Mr. VVoodrow McKinney, an old class mate and president of the Senior class of 1930. He asked if I could drop him off in Scot- land to visit his ancestors. As I was on a non-stop flight I told iiim he would have to drop off in a parachute. He was perfectly willing for he was very anxious to learn as soon as possible their famous money saving theory. A few days later I saw him land safely in Scotland, near Edinburgh. I heard over the radio that all kinds of bad weather had been predicted for all over Europe and Asia. I did not want to pass through Africa and I have always had a whim to see Paris so I radiophoned Paris that I would be there about nightfall. Imagine my surprise when all the great people turned out to welcome me, but the greatest was the fact that from a crowd of Bella Donnas stepped Miss Gwen Breeding, who had become a famous Parisian dress designer. She was followed by her famous manequins. I was very anxious for my aeroplane to be overhauled so Miss Breeding told me of Mr. Carl Lambert, who had become very famous in that line of business. I was very glad to see my old class mate but was disappointed in meeting his brunette wife, the Dutchess of Marlborough, as he showed such a preference to blondes during his school days. I was cer- tain he would marry a blonde. A week later I was in my aeroplane and on my way to Mandalay, I was passing over the I-Iymalayas, I saw in the distance two or three volcanoes in eruption. I realized that there was no way to cross so I landed. I saw a little speck in the distance and decided to go over and see what it was. As I near- ed the group I found that it was a group sent out by the Nation- al Geographic Magazine to get pictures of China. I was over- joyed in finding Miss Margaret Neumann off from the crowd painting a picture of the eruption. After talking to her I found that she was chief artist for the National Geographic Magazine and was drawing a thousand a month. Margaret said she wanted me to meet a friend of hers, so she took me into the main tent and imagine my pleasure on see- ing Ramona Vasquez of 1930, who had become the wife of Mr. Marko Laniero, the editor and chief of this wonderful magazine. I stayed with them a few days and continued my journey and landed in New York on July 22, 1950. I am working for the Me'tro-Goldyn-Mayer Co. to perform stunts in their Vitaphone picture. Since then one of our members has left school, leaving us nine members. ' The class was organized in October, and Miss Mavis Ann Smith was chosen as sponsor. Hubert Nunn was elected presidentg Willie Davis, vice president: Cora Beth Bickley, secretary: and Mary Ruth Davis, reporter. Climb, Though the Rocks Be Rugged was selected as the class motto, but Together We Stick, Divided We're Stuck was adopted later to express our sentiments more fully toward each other. The Junior Class colors are scarlet and gold. The class flower is the rose. At the beginning of our organization some pulled one Way and some another, so when the question of what should be our class emblem arose no one could decide so the matter was dropped. But this does not hold true of our class now. The Junior Class this year has won a name for itself not only as being one of the jolliest classes in the school, but also a class upon which one could surely depend to put over any entertainment or project. Our chief aim this year has been to secure affiliation in English Three. Whether or not we have achieved this will be determined next year, but we may say this, that even if we do fail, we have tried, and English Three is perhaps one of the rugged rocks mentioned in our motto. Our class is a distinguished class. Almost every member has accomplishi- ed some noteworthy thing which will be history in Fabens High School years from now. Hubert Nunn, our honored president, is captain of both the football and basketball teams. Sam Cresap is an athlete of great value to the school and participates in all sports. He attended both the district and state meets in Track. VVillie Davis is the school cartoonist. His decided talent in this line of Work has won him much praise. He is also a member of the foot- ball and basketball teams. Edmund O'Donnell is also a good athlete and plays both football and basketball. Frank Magee, the tallest boy in school, is a good center on the basketball team. Without his fine playing and great height the team would be far from what it is. Mary Ruth Davis, who represented Fabens High School in the Cotton Festival at Liberty Hall this year, was the yell leader of our pep squad. She represtented Fabens in the County Declam- ation Contest and won second place. Cora Beth Bickley was voted the prettiest girl in school. She is a member of both basketball and volley ball teams. H'elen Martin and Cuca Carbajal are important members of our class. They are both talented musicians and the junior Class never lacks a source of special music. The Junior Class of this year will be the Seniors of next year. We want to make next year a gala time for Fabens High. We have the material, the pep, and the determination: all we lack is time and object, but we will acquire these next year. So watch out for us Fabens High! We entered into all athletics. The girls have played on the volley ball, tennis and basketball teams. These occupy almost the entire first floor of the main building. , It is the first year for regular kindergarten work and under Miss Janice Felty they have had a most interesting and instruc- tive year, special emphasis being laid on health habits and right living. The first grade with Mrs. Pancy Bell and assisted by Mrs. Hamilton has also had many interesting health races, with Basil Huggins winning the most gold stars. Miss Ruby Moody, teacher of the second grade, has also stressed health, but their Dutch project was decided the most interesting of the year. A sand table was made to resemble a scene in Holland with canals, tulips, windmills, Dutch boys and girls and even dogs pulling milk cans in small carts. The third grade had two winners in the Mexican county contest, Antonio Rodriguez in spelling and Lupe Cardero in writing. Miss Mynette Wadswolrth has stressed personal clean- liness and Weight. The fourth and fifth grades do departmental work under Misses Mildred Perkins, Eura Mae Hoover, Mrs. Garland Ma- lone and C. T. Allen. The fourth grade had the winning team in the county sub- junior spelling contest. This team was Wanda Ivey and joela Trice. Alice Jean Myers and William Thomas Martin also plac- ed in the local declamationncontest. The fifth grades had winners in the county picture mem- ory contest. These were Aline Culberson, Frances Chambers, Celia Cramer, Ascencion Trejo, Raul and Trini Maldanado. june Buttrey was a member of the team that won second in the County Music Memory Contest. In 1908 a trio consisting of Pat O'Donnell, C. F. White and jesus Carlos with far reaching vision planned and built a one room school house at the cost of 3500. The money was raised by subscription and the land donated by the Newman Investment Company. The little school grew rapidly, another room was added the following year, fifteen pupils attended and of this number two were Americans. Unlike other pioneer schools, this little school always had a nine months term. P. H. Phelan was the first teacher. His salary was S405 per year. By 1913 more people had moved to Fabens and the trustees felt the time had arrived to seperate the American and Mexican children. The Americans were housed in a room at the rear of the old Camp Jackson, the present site of the Myers Co. Other troubles came thick and fast along the border caus- ed by the Mexican Revolution. This helped to cause a feeling of enmity among the Mexicans. The Mexicans were allowed to remain in the first school building until moved to the old Amer- ican school in 1925. Another strong effort was made and in 1914 the American school was planned and built by J. C. Hansen. This building was used until 1925 when a larger school was built for the growing population of Fabens. Among the teachers who deserve special mention for their deep human sympathy are Miss Lola Gray, Miss Sternberg, now Mrs. Joe Cannon of Van Horn and 'Miss Ellen Kelley of El Paso. The Mexican school has grown full to overflowing during the second semester of the school year just passed. There was an average daily attendance of 185. There are four grade and five teachers, two teachers being employed in the Low First Grade. EDMUND o DOINNELL fHalf Backp Rach earned his letter at half back and he should be one of our best players for next year. When he once got his fighting Irish blood up he was a dan- gerous tackler or ball carrier. CARL LAMBERT CEndj Carl's place at the wing will be hard to fill next year as we lose him through graduation. He played as regularly as anyone on the squad. PAGE FORTY-FIVL FOOTBALL FOR NINETEEN TWENTY-NINE The football season was not in the ordinary sense of the term a success. From the start both the team and the coach worked under adverse conditions. At the beginning of the season Coach Bell realized that most of his men did not know the fundamentals of football, be- cause it was their first year to play football. There was a scar- city of material, there being only six letter men in all. The first game was played on our own field against the El Paso Night Shift. We went into the game determined to win and did so 7 to 0. Next we journeyed to Las Cruces and played them. For one half of the game We held them scoreless, but in the second half we became overpowered and they ran up a big score. The next game we played the Night Shift in El Paso. In the first half we made two touchdowns but neither one counted. Not knowing what this was for and the referee being unable to explain, we became discouraged. At the half we rallied and came back ready to win. We was again penalized after a long gain. At this stage Hubert Nunn was sent off the field and we was not able to fill his place. The next week we again went to El Paso to play Austin Junior High. The field was muddy as a result of a rain the night before and we were beat again. On October the first we played Cathedral on our field. We played hard but were overpowered by them. Next we played Bowie in one of the hardest games ever played in Fabens. They got a twelve point lead in the first of the game but no scores were made after that. Then came the game of the season-the game with Ysleta for the County Championship. It was played in Ysleta on a very pretty day for football. Both teams played hard and the game was very close. After the battle had ended with the score against us there was satisfaction in the fact that we had fought a good fight. Having lost our guards, forwards and jump center of previous years, we started the season with a rather weak team. The only players having had previous experience were Captain Cleo Nunn, and Cora Beth Bickley. The outstanding characteristic of the team was its splendid sportsmanship which was manifested in every game. Each girl worked earnestly and those receiving letters were: Cleo Nunn, Cora Beth Bickley. Eva Cooke, Alpha Mae Woods, Johnnie Wads- worth, Frances Marchbanks and Bernice Trice. Others who supported the team wereg Rose ltancich, Dorothy Patridge, Florene Menefee, Frances Dockray and Corinne Whitaker. The improvement made during the season was shown in the return games with Ysleta and Clint. The fast floor work of Nunn, the accurate shooting of Lefty Woods, with the alertness and quick passing of the rest of the players called forth the best efforts of the opposing teams. BOYS' BASKETBALL FOR 1930 VVe started the season in high spirits and although we lost the first few games we didn't lose hopes. We lost to Ysleta, then to Tornillo and then won from Clint in the first half. After the holidays we won from Ysleta and Tor- nillo and this put us in the race for county championship until one of our players was protested and the games had to be played over. Hubert Nunn started the season at guard, but when one of our players quit school he was shifted to forward where he played the rest of the year. He played in seventeen games, made twenty-four field goals, ten free throws, nine personal fouls and scored fifty-eight points. Carl Lambert played guard and forward. He played in seventeen games, made five field goals, five free throws, thirty-two personal fouls and scoreo fifteen points. VVillie Davis played at guard the whole season. Although he didn't have a chance on the o-ffense, he was a big help on the defense. He played in four- teen games, made one free throw, eleven personal fouls and scored one point. Sam Cresap played forward the whole season. Although he was not very strong on basket throwing, he was a valuable man on the floor. He played in seventeen games, made six field goals, ten free throws, twenty-six personal fouls and scored twenty-one points. Frank Magee was a very valuable man at center because of his ability to throw goals. He played in seventeen games, made sixty-one field goals, six free throws, seven personal fouls and scored one hundred and twenty-eight points. ' - Bob Whitaker played forward while he was going to school. He played in eleven games, made twenty-four field goals, six free throws, fifteen personal fouls and scored fifty-six points. ' 4 Arturo Rodriguez was a good man on the floor and also a good shot. He played in five games, made four field goals, one free throw, five personal fouls and scored nine points. For the second time in two years they walked off with the El Paso County meet held at Fabens in March. Three weeks later they took part in the District meet and placed third in the meet which was won by El Paso and second going to Rankin. Two weeks later they took part in the State meet at Austin. Altho they did not place in the finals they came close in the semi-finals. ' Captain ,lay Reeves was the outstanding man of the team. He was good in the 100, 220 and 440 besides the mile relay. He also took part in the broad jump and shot put. He graduated in june. Irish O'Donnell was another man who was to graduate and who was a valuable man to the team. He could run anything from the 100 to the half mile and beat most of them. He was a member of the mile relay team that took second at the District meet at El Paso. His specialty was the broad jump and the 220. H. L. McCune was the hardest working man on the team. Although not' outstanding in any one event, he always could be depended upon to win his share ofthe points. His specialty was the high hurdles and the weights. He also graduated in june. The fourth man we were to lose by graduation was Jewell VValto11, who had no peer in the shot put. He also pole vaulted, threw the discus and jave- lin and high jumped. ' Sam Cresap, altho only a Sophomore, showed that he was a coming track man. He ran the half and on the relay, besides broad jumping. He will be' the best man on the team next year. Frank Magee, the high jumping wizard , always places in this event. Be- sides the high jump, he ran the hurdlesein fine shape and could be depended upon to fill in on the relay team. He has another year. Bob W'hitaker was our outstanding javelin thrower. Besides the javelin he ran on the relay team and the hurdles and pole vaulted. Another year and he will place in the State meet in the javelin as he missed qualifying by inches this year. With the return of Wliitaker, Magee, Cresap and three men who did not letter but placed in the County meet, Fabens ought to win the County trophy for the third time in 1930. . Those placing in the County meet besides those above were Hubert Nunn in the half mile, Willie Davis in the quarter and Clarence Black in the mile. All of these men, including Mr. Lakey, the coach, received sweaters from the School Board in token of their work. Fabens was very proud of its team. Boys and girls from the fourth to the eighth grades were permitted to enter the meet if they wished. All were classified in either A, B, C or D classes based upon age, weight and height. , Our class A boys and girls were the ones that won most of the points for our team. Those in classes B, C and ,D also helped a great deal. We won the meet with 40 points, followed closely by Cadwallader school. Of this 40 points our A boys and girls made 30. Outstanding performers were Howard Brown, Hugh O'Donnel1, Rachel Bickley, Johnnie Hendricks, John Brown, Starlin Clifford, Robert Barrett, Arturo Rodriguez, Corrinne 'Whitaker, Blanche Menefee, Kenzie Turner and Dorothy Pat- ridge. This is the third time that Fabens has won the junior Track Championship in succession, thereby giving us the Track Trophy permanently. As most of these will be in high school the next year or two we expect to have a real track team in a few years. Any pupil that does not participate in any other public speaking contest is allowed to try out in this Work. Each of the following pupils were coached daily from fifteen to twenty minutes by Mr. Quinn: Mary Ruth Davis, Frances Dockray, Dorothy Patridge, Cora Beth Bickley, Woodrow McKinney, Hubert Nunn and Edward Magee. At the home contest Mary Ruth Davis won for the senior girls and VV'ood- row McKinney for the boys. These two students represented our school at the county meet at Tornillo and were very successful, Woodrow winning first place for the boys and Mary Ruth second for the girls. Woodrow was then sent to the district meet where he won fourth place. This is the second year for VVoodrow to represent us at the district meet and he will be missed next year. PAGE SIXTY-TWO SAM CRESAP JOHNNIE WADSWORTH FRANCES MARCHBANKS CLARENCE BLACK DEBATE Fabens High School realizes that all students graduating should be able to make a speech before an audience. In most schools public speaking is a re- quired subject. Even though the students here have never had any training along that line they were very interested in the debate teams organized and coached by Mr. Quinn The girls team was very successful too, this being their first year. They won at the county and represented El Paso County in the district meet at Alpine. The boys team represented Fabens High School at the county meet. Much interest and work was shown by these debaters, and they are to be complimented and honored as they were the first to represent Fabens High School in debate. Wfe hope now that this new work is started it will con- tinue in interest and success. PAGE SIXTY-THREE PAGE SIXTY-FOUR SPELLERS FABENS SPELLING TEAMS Every year some of spelling teams win some of the spell- ing championships. This year it was the Sub-Juniors who did so well. They won first and second individually andthereby won first in team. Joella 'Trice and Wanda Ivey were the team and they certainly worked hard to win for Fabens. Our juniors did not do as well as the Sub-juniors but they had much harder competition and the words this year were harder than the usual Junior words. Ethel Barrett and Bill Summers composed the team. In the home contest to find out who should represent Fabens at the County meet, these two had plenty of competition, so that next year we ought to, have a winning team. They placed third in the County. Rose Rancich andlMargaret Neumann composed the Senior team. They worked hard but did not have anyone to help them so they did not do as well as they could. Both will grad- uate this year so the burden will fall on new shoulders to up- hold our record in Senior Spelling. VVe have not won the Cham- pionship' since 1927 so it is about time we won this coming year. Miss Hoover' coached the Sub-luniors to their champion- ship and deserves much credit for their success. PAGE SIXTY FIVE l PAGE GWENDOLYN BREEDING V VELA BESS HOLMES JUNE BUTTREY MARILYN MYERS ESSAY WRITING Gwendolyn Breeding was our Senior Essay writer and won first place in the County Contest. l3y her winning the Essay Writing, Fabens was able to win the High School Literary Trophy for the first time. Vela Bess Holmes, under the 'direction of Mrs. Malone, entered in the Junior Essay Writiiig Contest and won third place in the County meet. In another year she ought to win the County contest as she is a faith- ful worker. MUSIC MEMORY Fabens was represented by June Buttrey and Marilyn Myers in the Music Mem- ory Contest. Miss VVadsworth directed the contest and had a great number trying out for the team. Marilyn tied for first. place in the County Contest, making a perfect score of 100 per cent. June took second, making a score of 98 per' cent. For team we took second. Next year we ought to win the County as June will be back for the team, along with those who did not make the team this year. SIXTY-SIX HOME ECONOMICS CLUB Cleo Yunn ....................... The Chapter affiliated itself with the Fu- ture Farmer organization of Texas and America. The State organization is a complete organization with officers and a State super- visor. Meetings are ,held each year and new officers are elected. At the State meetings certain objectives are set up for the State organization to carry out the coming year. Then each local chapter sets up its objectives and includes their part of the State work that has already been planned. Some of the things that the organization sponsors afre: Father and Son Banquets for each chapter, a State meeting at the Dallas Fair, and a contest among all the boys at A. 85 M. College of Texas in the spring of each year. The contest at A. Kc M. includes the judging of dairy cattle, beef cattle, hogs, sheep, goats, grain and horses. Contests are 'held in farm sfhop work, entomology, cot- ton fclaissing, wool grading, and budding and grafting. These contests are all held in one day at the college. From 1,500 to 2,000 boys enter these contests each year.
