Lena Kristina Martinoff was Exira Community's foreign exchange student this year. She came to Exira in August of 1972, and soon became a full-fledged member of the Curtis Nelson household; Margaret and Jim Nelson are students here at EHS. Lena came to us from the Scandinavian country of Finland. There her father is Vice-President of a large soft drink company. Her mother is an active sponsor of school events, and according to Lena, she is a really great person. Lena also has two sisters, a younger one and an older one, whom Lena resides with in an apartment. On August 28, the Seniors of EHS adopted Lena into their class. The Vice-Presidency was the office Lena was elected to at the annual class meeting. She was also an honorary member of Student Council and travelled with this group to various surrounding schools. Lena took many of the same courses that the other Seniors were taking. She was active in music, speech, church, and was always making new friends. As a final project, Lena gave a slide presentation on her homeland, Finland. The topics discussed ranged from X-rated skin flicks to peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches. During her last week of school, Lena exchanged homes with Waterloo's Japanese foreign exchange student, Kaiko, who stayed with Kathy Tibben. Lena has certainly made a good impression upon the students of EHS--she has been a superb ambassador from Finland. Lena ( Lana ) on the right enjoys telling Margaret about her native land of Finland.
