Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1973 volume:

This year at Exira High School we had a foreign exchange student from Finland. Therefore, we chose M1NUN YSTAVAT as the theme for the 1973 Yearbook. This translates as My Friends . Exira Community Schools Exira, Iowa 50076 Jn Memory of Zerri Petersen Terri was a pretty girl. Full of life and full of living; Many loved and all admired Lovely Terri, fair as light. Terri always wore a smile Never did I see a frown; She was strong, yet she was gentle Lovely Terri, fair as light. When Terri died that fateful night Many mourned her going; Harsh words were spoken And tears were cried. But all the tears and all the words Could not bring Terri back to life Lovely Terri, fair as light. And although she has stopped living All of us have to wake up tomorrow morning And live each new day. -Nadine Molgaard- msms wjzm you -{John Denver- “What a friend we have in time:• Gives us children, makes us wise, Zells us what to take or leave behind . . . CLASS COLORS Purple and Pink CLASS FLOWER Pink Roses Lena Kristina Martinoff was Exira Community's foreign exchange student this year. She came to Exira in August of 1972, and soon became a full-fledged member of the Curtis Nelson household; Margaret and Jim Nelson are students here at EHS. Lena came to us from the Scandinavian country of Finland. There her father is Vice-President of a large soft drink company. Her mother is an active sponsor of school events, and according to Lena, she is a really great person. Lena also has two sisters, a younger one and an older one, whom Lena resides with in an apartment. On August 28, the Seniors of EHS adopted Lena into their class. The Vice-Presidency was the office Lena was elected to at the annual class meeting. She was also an honorary member of Student Council and travelled with this group to various surrounding schools. Lena took many of the same courses that the other Seniors were taking. She was active in music, speech, church, and was always making new friends. As a final project, Lena gave a slide presentation on her homeland, Finland. The topics discussed ranged from X-rated skin flicks to peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches. During her last week of school, Lena exchanged homes with Waterloo's Japanese foreign exchange student, Kaiko, who stayed with Kathy Tibben. Lena has certainly made a good impression upon the students of EHS--she has been a superb ambassador from Finland. Lena ( Lana ) on the right enjoys telling Margaret about her native land of Finland. 15 FRIEND .... You are in my mind, in my heart My Friends think I am CRAZY But really I only act this way!! The 1972-73 Season ended with a record of 11-11. Also, several awards were given to outstanding players. The girls placed second to conference champs, Manilla. The team worked hard in spite of many disappointments and frustrations. Despite these hardships, the year ended well. We will be losing four starting seniors for the 1973- 74 Season, who added quite a lot to the team. The fresh- man girls look very promising and should help to make next year's team even finer. Several of the teams were state ranked, so Exira had a tough time finishing 7th, but over all it was a great success. The wrestlers had to give up 24 points each meet due to forfeits and lack of personnel which hurt a great deal. Next year with a lot of work we could be entering state competition. The Jr. High competed in 4 meets with hopes of a full 6 meet next sea- son. Three outstanding boys were S. Hansen, S. Jespersen, and S. John- son, with the last two undefeated. The cheerleaders held pep rallies in the gym with such skits as Mr. Legs and Dragnet , with contests such as pie throwing and cheering of the different classes. 41 My Friends think I am Busy . . . ACTIVITIES And they are right! Homecoming 1972 A Time For Us There was a hot time in the old town that night. With the bonfire blazing, the traditional dummy was thrown in by our co-captains, John Johnson and Dave Hansen. The annual- parade of floats was held in the afternoon at the grade school. First place was taken by the Class of ”76”. Their theme being Wishing for a Victory . And we all jived to the music of Mom. Homecoming began with all the pag- eantry of coronation. The mood was set by Ms.Powers and Mr. Mrs. Alt singing A Time for Us . Shortly after came the excitement and tears of honoring our cho- sen royalty. A change of moods was cre- ated by the color of floats and the race of romper stompers. As night fell the Mighty Vikings conquered the Crusaders of Coon Rapids. Then was the dance of victory and all were happy as another day ended. 44 My Friends think I am ROYALTY . . . but really I am a COMMONER Queen Margy was crowned by our football coach, Mr. Smith. The clock of time was used as the background for the coronation ceremony. Margy Hennick was escorted by David R. Hansen, co-captain of the foot- ball team. The crown was carried by Paul Bintner and Angie Hansen pre- sented the flowers. Coach Snyder held the flowers, while the Queen attended to more serious business. Our candidates were chosen through the clubs with two girls and two boys from each class representing these organizations. Mary Ballou, Jr. and Mark Phelps, Sr. were elected Queen and King of the event by the student body. Cyndi Petersen, Soph, and John Johnson, Sr. served as princess and prince of the ball. Colour My World 47 Believe it or not, the junior class came through. The Junior-Senior Prom had a Spanish theme which was Noche De Vino Y Rosa’’, or in English, The Night of Wine and Roses . The cafe and lobby were decorated in red and black with yellow, pink, and green as accent colors. The Spanish food was hot and spicy, which sent a few people running to the water fountain. The entertainment consisted of a bull- fight and a dance done by the sophomore servers, and a song in Spanish sung by Ms. Powers. At the dance, the people swung to the music of the Slaughter House. 48 “Noche De Vino Y Rosa” Full Page Sponsorship by JOHNSON PHARMACY, Exira, Iowa. 49 50 Fine Arts Department: My Friends think I am Gomer Pyle But really I am Sir Lawrence Olivier lasGHQr.L, jjouhHC GLEE CLUB: Row 1:J. The award winning Broadway hit tells the story of a New York society woman, Marne, and her escapades with her nephew, Patrick, and their friends during the Depression years. Marne's antics often led to unhappy circum- stances, but her witty humor and ebullience somehow managed to shine through even the hardest times. The EHS cast portrayed this idea of humor associated with heartbreaks throughout the show. MAME! was a fitting climax for David and Jennifer Alt, directors, who will be leaving Exira this year. National Honor Membership in the National Honor Society has become nationally recognized as one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a high school student. The local chapter invites students to become members only after membership has been earned. Qualifications are based upon the four areas of scholarship, 3.25 grade point average or better; leadership; character; and service. Sophomores are accepted into membership on a pro- visional basis and only become active members if they maintain their high standards for the last two years of school. We started with 30 inter- ested people but only 12 became workers and 8 of these loyal staff. With any book there is the usual goofing off, pictures that are censored, and ideas that are re- done. This year's staff decided not to go into debt like the last two yearbooks ($2, 000 in the red!). The pages were cut to 88 (which is average for our size school) and they worked harder to raise the money. With your support this record of the 1972-73 school year is possible. Such happenings as the fire drill in December which made us realize that it wasn't Spring yet, the technical fouls at basketball games, the noon hour structured study halls, the warm discussions in the teacher's lounge, the various love affairs, and Mr. Miller's mid-day news reports all added to our memories of the hectic and some- times illegal activities of the student body. We hope this book brings back some of these memories. Now that the 1972-1973 school year is history, we would like to thank those people who made this book possible: Mr. Bostum of Bostum's Photography Studio, Jerry Harter for a photo, our mystery poet, the advertisers, Ms. Powers' English classes for the poetry theme idea, Mr. Jim Johnson for the use of his airplane, with a« very special thanks to Mr. Jorgensen for all the fine work he did on the developing of negatives and printing of pictures.
