This year six of our girls gave a fine showing of Exira Pride! You would think that such a small number would not be very effective, but they were. After an invitational meet at Manilla, the District, the state meet, and many long hours of work, Exira was in the finals. Cathee Christ, a freshman, qual- ified for State where she placed 34th out of 140 competitors. The whole school would like to say “Thanks girls,” for a job well done to represent our school. Members of squad from left to right: Eunice Hansen, Lois Hansen, Phyllis Wulf, Cathee Christ, and Margaret Nel- son. VIKINGS SWING INTO ACTION With ten players on the team, the Exira Vikings had four wins and ten losses accounted to them. During the season, home runs were hit by seniors Mitch Bengard, Robert Payne, and Steve Foster. Four top batting averages were reported by Coach Jorgen- sen: Larry Meurer .412, Mike Bengard .351, Steve Foster .333, and Robert Payne .310. A fine performance was shown by all boys. Front: Audrey Loukaitis, Eunice Hansen, Lori Sorensen, Ronda Lage. Back: Joan Kilworth, Judy Andersen, Terri Bengard, Patty Christensen, Debbie Meurer, Denise Schlater, Jolene Stephensen. Barb Jensen, Cathee Christ, Debbie Kirk, Roxanne Schlater, Lois Hansen, Coach Stam. It was a disap- pointing season with a 1-6 record Sponsored by Exira Super Valu, Exira, Iowa but it sure was fun This year there was no bonfire, no parade, and the weather was rainy and cold, but Homecoming is always Homecoming, regardless of the condi- tions. The Seniors were still in town terrorizing the underclassmen, and homework for this week was a waste of time and space in the teachers plan- ning book. This year the Sophomores float, “Dial Up a Victory” took top honors. Second were the Seniors with “Too Bad They Didn’t Have Their Wheaties” and Juniors received third with “Hatch a Victory”. The corona- tion was carried out under the theme “Aquarius”, with Jill Smith crowned queen, and her court; Cindy Godwin, Bonnie Lykke, Janice Schutt, and Barb Jayne. The most important part of Homecoming is always the game. The Victory of the game makes Home- coming a success and this year was no exception. The Exira Vikings defeated the Scranton Trojans 67-0. The “Why Cooper” provided the music for the dance. AND HIGH ABOVE ALL MEMORIES . . . Many honors were presented to many of the team players at the end of the season. Seven seniors and one junior received these honors. Robert Payne received All Southwest Iowa, All Conference and Honor- able Mention All-State. Another senior, Mitch Bengard, was chosen All Conference and Honorable Mention All-State. Also receiving the honor of All Conference was Brian Madsen. Four other seniors: Greg Bintner, Paul Christensen, Mike Bengard, and Steve Foster received Honorable Mention All Conference. The only junior, Mike Akers, received Honor- able Mention All-Southwest Iowa and All Conference. Sponsored by Larsen Ford Exira, Iowa WAY YOU SPELL SUCCESS! Rod • ««« Maybe our theme of Homecoming should have been “Virgo” instead of “Aquarius” for our Queen, Jill Smith, was born under the sign Virgo. Cyndy Godwin, the Princess, was a Libra. Bonnie Lykke, a Capricorn, reigned as Countess. The Duchess was Janice Schutt, she was born under the sign of Cancer. Lady of the Court was an Aries, Barb Jayne. Sponsored by Exchange State Bank and Emmert Manufacturing Paul Mike Mitch Robert Happiness is being a super senior! Each boy showed us this great ability in each of the Viking games. Brian Sponsored by Walton Products Atlantic, Iowa 44 Nick Larry Stan Don Sponsored by Victory Cafe Audubon, Iowa Steve Winston 45 VIKINGETTE PRIDE IS BEAUTIFUL THING Much work and pride put together a promising team for the future. This years Vikingettes did well but the season wasn’t as successful as was hoped, but it did put hope in the future. The Vikingette defensive court did a super job and proved it when Phyl Byriel, a senior guard, broke the school record in blocked shots and Barb Jayne, another senior guard, broke the school record for steals. Phyl Byriel was also picked to be on the all Conference Honor Team. KJAN All Southwest Iowa ThirdTeam. and the Iowa Press Association Honor Team. Now speaking of the offensive court, of which all for- wards will be returning for another year. Debbie Kirk, a sophomore forward, went to district in free throws. She went up against seniors and was beat only by the state champ. Although the season wasn't as successful as we all hoped the Vikingettes can be proud of what they did accomplish. There will be all but four lettermen returning, so watch out for the Vikingettes in the future! Hustle, determination, and skill added to the Viking success in their 12-8 season. Two records were broken and one tied. Mitch Bengard tied the rebounding record of 30 re- bounds in one game set by Jim Pedersen in the 1965-66 season. Mike Bengard set a new scoring record of 50 points in a single game, previously set by Ed Larsen in the Viking sea- son 1970-71, with 46 points. Overall, the Vikings broke their own scoring record of 113 points in one of their conference games. Mitch and Mike Bengard received the honor of 1st team All Coon Valley Conference while teammate Winston Hoegh earned the honor of Honorable Mention All Conference. Although plagued by the injury of teammate Mike Bengard at the beginning of the season, the Vikings still proved to be a powerful team. Front Row, left to right: Mike Akers, wt. 167;Chuck Crees, wt. The 1971 Girls Track team of Exira High School worked toward a goal of being a team of ‘WEV who worked together for something called success-both individual and team success. As a team they have broken records 26 times and tied records two times. Then have broken eleven different records, hold three conference records and qualified six events for state competition. In state competition they placed second in the 880 yard medley relay paced by Cathee Christ’s :59.0 440 anchor. They placed third in the 440 yard relay. This is the first time since 1962 that Exira has placed in the highly respected state meet. Cathee ran in the indoor Federation Meet early in March and placed first in the 880 yard run and fifth in the 440 yard run. In all her attempts in the 880 yard fun she has placed first every- time. She holds the record in the 880 and 440 run and the long jump. Both she and Judy Andersen were asked to participate in the Southwest Iowa Track Club in the Federation Meet held in May. Cathee also has the distinction of being the only girl in Exira history to score 100 points or more in a single season. The squad chose Sharon Struble and Judy Andersen as their team captains. Lj P R E S I D E N 7 Like about everyone else at EHS, the Student Council had an active, worthwhile year. Their year of business began rather well, with the sponsoring of a great Homecoming, carried out in the theme of Aquarius. The SC’s next order of business was a change in the dress code, allowing girls to wear slacks. The code has been followed and fortunately for the girls, still exists. In the cafeteria, a new addition was added to the soda pop scene. The SC bought and installed a new pop machine for the student’s use. The latest attempt by the SC, was to make the student’s life less boring and more leisure, was the student lounge. Due to the lack of res- ponsibility and care not shown by the students, the student lounge is still a question. Together the SC and the students worked to make 70-71 a good year. 71 THE GET TOGETHER PEOPLE Journalism Department: Left Row, left to right: Kathy Hays, Linda Sorensen, Ronda Lage, Barb Jayne, Cindy Jensen, Lois Sorensen, Sue Bro, Maureen Knutsen, Brian Madsen, Phyl Byriel, and Mike Smith. Middle Row: Bonnie Lykke, Cindy God- win, and Miss Nance. Left Row, right to left: Gary Johnson, Krista Larsen, Terri Nelson, Donita Williams, Tam Jacobsen, Deb Hansen, Ronda Paulsen, Chuck Crees, Marilyn Jayne, and Brian Lensch. With a theme of togetherness the Journalism Department not only tried to carry it through in the yearbook but also in themselves and the people around them. If they were not together selling something they were together working on their first year project of publishing a weekly newspaper and a yearbook. The newspaper editors’job began early when they went to summer camp to prepare for the coming year. With a combination of hard work and just plain fun the Journalism Depart- ment put it all together to complete a very active year. 72 Sponsored by Audubon County Journal, Exira, Iowa.
