Scoring for Exira were Herb Anciaux on a short plunge and Herluf Jensen on a thrilling 76 yard pass play from Paul Payne. Paul Payne made the extra point. Exlra put on a show of offensive power in the first Coon Valley Conference game, scoring 38 points. Scoring for Exira were Herluf jensen with 13 points, Paul Payne with 12, Charles Wheeler with 6, and Herb Anciaux with 6. Terry Lauridsen, Curt Bladt, Dave Petersen were standouts on defense. Paul Payne scored the winning touchdown and intercepted a pass that stopped a Glidden scoring threat in the final seconds of play. Herb Anciaux scored the extra point. This game was a great team effort with everyone doing a good job on defense. Exira lost its first conference game in the final seconds of play. Exira scored 12 points in the first quarter when Paul Payne scored on an end sweep and Herb Anciaux scored on a 35-yard run. The line did a fine job on defense with Dave Petersen, Mike Baier, Terry Lauridsen, Curt Bladt contributing greatly in three goal line stands. Exira's only score came when Herb Anciaux kicked to Bayard's one-yard line, and two plays later Exira tackled a Bayard ball carrier in the end zone. This was one of Ex1ra's best defensive games. Behind at the half 6-o, Exira came back in the third quarter on a touchdown by Anciaux. The P.A.T. was good. The fourth quarter was played in a steady downpour of rain and it appeared that Exira's one point might be enough, however, Scranton scored on a pass play with two minutes left in the game. Susan Petersen totaled 59M points for a 25.8 average while Karen Andersen tallied 296 and Lynnette Hansen 203 points for averages of 12.0 and 8.8 points respectively. The Exira boys' team finished the regular season with five wins and twelve losses. Paul Payne led the team in total points with a total of 305 points. Paul was followed by Herb Anciaux, with 272 points, and Rich Bro with 23h points. The Vikings finished in a tie for third place with a H-3 record. Paul Payne led the Viking team in conference scoring with 125 points, followed closely by Herb Anciaux with l21 points and Rich Bro with 99 points. The basketball records show that the Vikings won only five games, however, the team lost two overtime games, one with Elk Horn and one to Anita. Chuck Cullings, center for the Vikings, did a fine job on the boards both offensively and defensively, while Dave Nelson, the other regular, handled the ball very well at his guard position. Doug Schroeter, hampered by a knee injury, and Pat Bintner, the other senior member on the squad, served the team well and provided the necessary bench strength. Statistics Exira had a total of 378 field goals and 183 free throws, making a total of 939 points. They accumulated 126 fouls. Their average was 55.2 points per game against their opponents' averaged of 62.9 points per game. In conference play, the Vikings made 157 field goals and 90 free throws for a total of 404 points. Their average per confer- ence game was 57.7 points. For the first time in ten years, two quartets were auditioned and selected to appear with some of the top quartets in the state of Iowa. Auditions were held October 27 at Red Oak, Iowa. Approximately one hundred quartets were entered and from this number, twenty were chosen to represent south west Iowa. A stingy man-for-man defense that allowed 15.6 points per game and a well-balanced offense that collected H3.9 points per game led the Junior High boys to a record of 8 wins and O losses. Exira gained M79 yards by rushing and 556 yards passing, for a total yardage count of lO35. At the same time a steady defense held four opponents to 9M yards rushing and 127 yards passing for 221 total yards. Marvie Miller led the offensive attack with 286 yards rushing in l9 attempts for a l5 yard average. Miller completed 17 of 27 passes for 461 yards and a completion mark of 632. Leroy Wahlert caught 18 passes with 9 of them going for touchdowns. Wahlert also scored a touchdown on a 2 yard plunge and 9 extra points for a total of 69 points. Miller scored 7 touchdowns and 3 extra points for M5 points.
